There's a tournament this weekend at Dreamhack Austin. The stream will be here: https://www.twitch.tv/dreamhackpt

I think it starts at 10am CST tomorrow and goes on for the entire day, then Top 8 is at 10am CST on Sunday. It's part of the Pokken Tournament Championship Series so top 16 get points and 1st place gets a Pokken Tournament World Championships invitation iirc.

Meh. More than any other Zoner in the game, Chandelure falls apart once you get close. The fact that none of its projectiles do chip damage also makes approaching less painful. I just don't like how all of its specials pierce armour.

Overheat is a fucking bitch when you are able to get up close.

So I've played a few matches online and I'm just getting destroyed. I'm playing as Suicune. What is the best way to practice so that I'm not so terrible. (Mewtwo is just so fast I don't feel that I can do anything to beat him).

I'm in a bit of a slump of only 46-50% win rate but to at least get there what I did was practice combos in the combo training then afterward I would go to free training and constantly practice random individual moves in and out of duel phase just so I know what my character was capable of.

In free training you can instantly reset the field to how you want it and practice what you want without having to follow every step of the regular tutorials.

Then I would read the move descriptions, especially things that say stuff like, "can be canceled with a Pokemon move" or whatever. Helped me a ton and I think I need to get back to that.

It just made me be much more aware of what I was capable of when phases shift back and forth.

I wish I could set up the computer to spam certain projectiles so I could figure out a way to reliably and consistently get past them.

In Field Phase, Suicune's down Y is chargeable and forms a crystal wall in front of it. This wall can block so weak projectiles and can force the opponent to approach from the side, I personally like to play with how it blocks perspective and hit people with a surprise Aurora Beam.

If you played the tutorial, then you already know Poké Combos are your go to attacks in Duel Phase especially for beginners. You probably already guessed that Suicune is at it's best when thee is some distance between it and the opponent, so make sure you have that distance when using Hydro Pump since it has a bit of a charge time and leaves you open. Aurora Beam comes out quick and can be angled upward to shoot diagonally, compared to Hydro Pump, it is a little more difficult to approach from it, but it still leaves you open if you are close enough.

Suicune's midair A, Blizzard, is a bit tricky for some characters to counter on block, since it pushes back when Suicune falls to the ground and you recover quicker than most would expect, your opponent might try to attack right away, so it would be a good idea to jump out of it.

If you need to put some distance between you, Suicune's midair Y is pretty good, since it's effective when jumping backwards, there is also it's counter attack, which has a follow up if you press Y when it hits. Aerial opponents can get hit by the angled Aurora Beam or standing X (directly in front of Suicune) and forward X (about half way across the screen). Hail right after they get up, can block some approach, combined with Icy Wind (hold A then release) can force them to block, giving you some breathing room.

If you are fighting someone who uses projectiles often, Mirror Coat would help in Field and Duel Phase, since Suicune will counter with Hydro Pump, this works with attacks from supports like Frogidier too.

Dreamhack was pretty fun to watch. Really looking forward to the other majors now.

Top 8 characters at the tournament:
2 Shadow Mewtwos, Sceptile, Mewtwo, Chandelure, Suicune, Lucario, Gardevoir

edit: Top 8 archive is here https://www.twitch.tv/dreamhackpt/v/65297904 and starts around 13 minutes in.

Was really disappointed no Gengar made it :(

Still, there were some fun matches.

And yet somehow the chat devolved into arguing if Blaziken is the best character in the game.

Seriously? I usually just hide them now as I can't stomach that bile.

Seriously, almost every match on stream was entertaining and top 16 onwards was hype as hell.by the end I was rooting for characters I DESPISE like Shadow Mewtwo and Sceptile.

it was more like one person making a stupid comment and the rest of the chat piling on him. generally, the chat achieved the bare minimum standard by blowing up when clutch stuff happened. Especially T-Loc grabbing Suicune Master out of BA.

I now understand what you guys were saying about lack of players online. Ran into the same player in ranked three times in a row.

Who the fuck dislikes sceptile?

At least he isn't a fucking coward like the unholy trinity.

Just got back from UK Nationals. While there was a LOT of room for improvement, the event was a TON of fun overall. I only got 17th, but my friend who also uses Blaziken managed to win the whole thing.

Went to Seattle Regionals Pokken tournament. Lost in Loser's finals of my pools for 17th place more or less. I could have made it farther if I wasn't deathly sick, lol.

I never got around to playing this more. I had it for more than a month from the library, and someone placed a hold on it so I returned it. Too many other games to play, and my first impressions just didn't incite me to play more.

To each their own, I guess.

Don't know about that, just saw that idea proposed on Facebook via Chartz, so maybe not?

Never trust anything put out by ********

their name is auto censored on GAF for a reason. They are notorious for making absolute bullshit statistics.

Physical Na LTD, possibly (physical japan for certain iirc). But we need more info from credible sources before making any conclusions.

Right, I hear ya. Just meant to say that is the poster I was quoting heard it from the same source that it's legitimacy is more than questionable......BUT at the same time that doesn't mean that Pokken hasn't actually outsold SF V in the U.S. As you said, we need some credible sources for that.

This game has among the worst voice acting I've had the displeasure of hearing. It's like they knew when you have a setting that completely turns it off.

So I started playing only as Gengar because it's my favorite pokemon.
Then I started using Lucha Pika. She's amazing.

The Japanese setting is less annoying.

Sure. I still don't understand what the friend code thing is though.

You set up a code and give it to the person you want to play with then they input it and they can play with you without having to add you to their friends list. It basically creates a private lobby for two people.

Ooooh. I thought each person had a specific code they give out to people, but I didn't know how to find it.

Wow, no Pikachu's in Top 8 at Dreamhack? Hot diggity dang!

Pretty sure we've evolved to the point where Ranked online matches are no longer free. Those still playing are skilled enough to be killers.

As far as I can tell, Pikachu and Garchomp have yet to break top 16 at a Championship Series event. On the other hand Sceptile has been in every Grand Final and won 2 out of 3 tournaments. it'll be interesting to see how Germany's Nationals turns out.

Here's a playlist with matches from Seattle Regionals that happened this past weekend.

There was also a tournament at the Pokemon UK Nationals: https://www.twitch.tv/pokkentournamenteu/v/66551481
It starts at around 57 minutes in. Grand finals is at the 7:00:30 mark if you just want to watch that.

Top 2 were Blaziken and Sceptile at both events.
I know I SUPER biased, but the UK finals were a much more entertaining watch.

I'm not seeing Gengars at all. Were the nerfs from the arcade version that bad?

Anyone in the UK who wants a Pokkén Tournament Pro Pad Controller, it's back in stock on the official UK store.

I've noticed some local shops brought new stock as well.

I hate it that everyone disconnects instead of rematching.

I can see why they would though, if you were to pick rematch when the opponent picked next battle, you get sent back to the online menu screen which is pretty annoying. So if you want to keep battling in a quicker succession it is just better to pick next battle all the time instead of picking rematch when someone probably isn't interested.

Man thought this was going to be a just a cute Pokemon side-story game with no depth but my God is it really fun and interesting and well done.

Popped it in for the first time at 8AM, didn't stop playing until 3PM and I was A-Rank in the single-player.

Man the avatar customization is great, the tutorials are great, the systems are great. Not sure how the competitive scene looks as I've yet to do online battles, but I'm totally into what I've played so far and it's far exceeded my expectations.

If it was like SFV's where you can see if they select rematch then I'd be less annoyed about it. It should be first to two. I like that.

Competitive is great. Being a low execution fighter, even low ranks have a lot of mind games and counterplay. Nothing beats facing an opponent who initially seems overwhelming, learning their strategy and turning the tides.

Got online today, climbed up to about .. E3? I think. Was about 10-3 overall with Braixen.

Man this game is fun. You're right, the chess battle once you get online and play a person a few times, you can't use the same strats, so you start moving through different patterns and trying to outsmart dudes on the attack triangle. God it's refreshing.

I am so terrible at Smash online and SFV, so I'm glad I finally found something I can have some fun with that isn't dependent on crazy technique or huge button combos.

For me, that could go one of two ways:
1. "They didn't accept my rematch, that jerk!"
2. "Aw geez, they want a rematch? But I don't feel like it, I feel so bad."

That's just me though, it's a fine idea. I would personally like it if there were rooms of people in rotation, like in Blazblue.

I also like how simple this game is. The attack triangle really helps turn the tides if you got a good grasp on your opponent. Although I'm still more attack happy than I should be. Every now and then I'd like to mix it up with my supports too, but I rarely use them effectively.

Glad your having fun, I look foward to the day your hopes and dreams and crushed by someone grabbing you just when you used a burst attack.
