Well today was interesting. I am taking the life/disability insurance course in order to take my licensing test for my new job and the teacher is a DIEHARD Republican. Has a calendar of Ronald Reagan hanging up in the class, said Reagan is his hero (the teacher is probably mid 50s) and said that he never felt as American before or since Reagan was in office.
He hates Obamacare, is for us building MORE prisons, etc., BUT he is for a universal expansion to medicaid. He is repulsed that we allow people to be put in the position where they have to go bankrupt due to medical bills. He also stated that he'd pay more in taxes if it meant that everyone could go to college for free.
It was quite interesting.

Put me in the "Why bother?" category. They are not going to get anything through the the House anyway.
Just take what they got and make commercials from it. Point out that ~90% of voters want full background checks but the GOP felt it was more important to leave a loophole so felons, wife-beaters, and insane people could buy guns. They've turned it from a dead issue into something they can run on in some places. The ball has been moved forward. A small amount. It is not over but nothing is going to happen with this Congress.

It seems that benefiting people is bad so this won't happen. You can call me lazy (and you probably will being that you are a lawyer), but I think that 40 hours a week is too much.
To me the goal of reform should be to improve society as much as possible.
It sort of makes sense to me. Someone with experience in a field, especially a lot of experience knows what needs to be done to make it better. He dislikes the ACA but wants medicare for all, I can't say many of us would disagree with that. I look at it sort of like my dad, the guy is super conservative on everything but immigration because he is an immigrant and knows what it's like.
Honestly it sounds like this guy was just caught up in the cult of Reagan like a lot of people that grew up in that time. The newsmedia didn't know how to counter him, he played TV news like a fiddle. Every journalism class I ever took talked about it, a lot of people who were in the profession at the time take it as a black eye.

He argued that the GOP attempted to get a universal Medicaid expansion passed in the leadup to the ACA vote. Maybe I just have a terrible memory but I don't seem to recall that. In fact more and more governors of Conservative states have rejected Obama's medicaid expansion offer. So yea, I don't know. He put forth an argument that many of us have in this thread. That if we can afford to put out billion dollar aircraft carriers we should be able to afford to make sure everyone has health care and a college education.
He seems to be a mix of a libertarian (his last name is Paul interestingly enough), a Republican, and a social dem on matters of education/healthcare.

Even if it fails, there's two benefits.
1. It keeps the debate in the public's mind, which is not a bad thing.
2. It can only further hurt Republicans' approval numbers if they reject it a second time.

From what I can tell from the snippets of Fox News coverage I've seen (who seem to be very pleased with themselves for now)
- there is one unidentified person who has come forth to suggest they were on the "inside" when the attacks happened (implies CIA or State Department or whatever)
- this person claims something could have been done because a strike team could have been scrambled when the "riots" started and the team could have been on the ground within 4 hours
- there are claims Clinton suppressed how much they knew about the attacks and that they could have been prevented if different, more immediate, attacks were taken
Overall, nothing new. Except now they have a "whistleblower" of as yet unknown identity (or credibility).

It's a horrible law, and you can tell it's been festering in a Frank Luntz laboratory for some time (seriously, it reminds me of social security privatization). "Workplace flexibility" would instead give employers an easier ability to cut overtime compensation. Federal workers tend to have stronger union benefits (and more friends in Washington) than private sector folks. A business could therefore abuse this law to force or "encourage" workers to take paid time off instead of OT. Unions would then step in...but oh wait, they're being systematically dismantled.
Kill unions, cut benefits, and then act oblivious when the working class gets screwed. It's a pretty transparent pro-business attack.
I've got a better idea. Raise the minimum wage and increase vacation time. I seem to recall US businesses are currently sitting on trillions of dollars.

I'd be fine with it if comp days expired within a year. Consequence to the employer is that they would have to pay 1.5 times plus 10% and the consequence to the employee would be that lost day. I think it would give employers an incentive to let their employees take off whenever the hell they want.

So apparently the Delaware Senate is going to be voting on gay marriage tomorrow, the House of Representatives already passed it. It looks like it's going to pass by one vote, assuming none of the senators change their votes.
Unlike the Rhode Island bill, both bills are the exact same so once it's passed, it'll go to the governor, who's promised to sign it.
It's amazing how rapid movement has been. MN and IL come on.
