Doesn't speak it fluently but understands some English.

The original comments bashing trickle-down economics are from his EVANGELII GAUDIUM which was translated by the Vatican themselves into English. I think his other comments were in interviews to Jesuit magazines that were translated into English.

Thanks. One of the instances they were referring to is with a recent interview with an Italian newspaper.

But yeah, I just find it funny that just like with the Bible, conservatives continue to this day trying to find translation issues, even when the person in question is still alive, lol.

Tea Party leader Ted Stevenot plans to challenge Ohio’s Republican Gov. John Kasich for the Republican gubernatorial nomination this year.

Stevenot, 48, will announce his candidacy with running mate Brenda Mack, 56, on Tuesday, according to a press release. Stevenot is the president of the Ohio Liberty Coalition and a co-founder of the Clermont County tea party.

A primary challenge could muddy Kasich’s already shaky base, just as Democrats line up to try and unseat the Republican from the top state office. State Democrats are supporting state official Ed FitzGerald’s challenge. Another Democrat, Todd Portune, also announced his intentions to run earlier this week.

If Stevenot and Mack gather the required 1000 signatures by next month, Kasich will be the first sitting Ohio governor to face a primary challenge in 36 years.

lol. Kasich is too liberal for Ohio Tea Partiers.

Florida is the first and probably last to enact this kind of policy, bar some GOP governor going full retard...again.

Either way, I'll take what I can get.

Tennessee is well on its way to do it. But the difference is that the testing is not for everyone, but for those who self-identify as using or previously using or determined to be likely to be using based on a questionnaire which is part of the application process. Not sure if that would pass muster altogether, but at least in theory it is restricted and suspicion-based.

How is the press release itself not announcing your candidacy? Why are announcements of announcements a thing?

I try not to get involved in non-PoliGAF political threads, but I couldn't resist staying out of that minimum wage threads. Probably because I'm working from home today (thanks, Hercules) and am looking for ways to procrastinate.

There are few tarker examples of businesses convincing the public to vote against their own interests than the minimum wage. The stupidity in that thread has given me a headache.

I thought some of you may appreciate this. Tracking enrollments for the ACA, though doesn't include the amount of children that have been able to stay on their parents plan until 26. Nor those who were denied coverage for preexisting conditions that are signing up directly with insurance companies and not the exchanges.

So Ezra Klein is going to leave the Washington Post after his publisher and Jeff Bezos declined his proposal of a separate website within the Washington Post, a la Nate Silver. His asking price? "Eight figures." :lol

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/03/b...to-plan-to-leave-the-post.html?ref=media&_r=0

Mr. Klein, who quickly ascended into the ranks of the Washington media establishment with a multiplatform blend of policy nuance and number-crunching on Wonkblog, approached Katharine Weymouth, the Post’s publisher, in recent weeks, the people said.

After consultation with the newspaper’s editor, Marty Baron, according to one of the people, he put forward a proposal with detailed revenue projections to build a new website dedicated to explanatory journalism on a wide range of topics beyond political policy. It would have been affiliated with The Post, the person said, but would have been a separate enterprise. The investment he sought, the person said, was in eight figures.

Anyone else noticed how much Village Person language has slowly creeped into his writing? It's like he went from a numbers/data guy to a numbers/data guy/White House leak recipient to a numbers guy/Beltway concern troll.

That was the investment for the whole enterprise not his salary. By the time you hire enough people to go broad-topic and on top you project to have funding for at least a few years without relying on ads, 10 million is not much.

I realize that. It could be 10 million, or 99 million. Still seems a bit much. It'll be interesting if any outside VC's or investors pick up the tap. And what kind of revenues is Klein expecting? I know it's apple and oranges, but Andrew Sullivan is only pulling around 850k in revenue solely from subscriptions. No ads or anything. Is Klein going to be subscription based, and how much traffic does he really drive?

Sounds like he was aiming more towards the NPR route, broader range of topics, more in depth coverage. Which is very expensive from what I understand. But if done right and attached to a big name mainstream news outlet, it could pull in quite a bit of subscriptions.

I don't imagine he would be "the" blog voice people pay for, like some other places, but more like managing the place and writing for it as well, Huffington Post type approach.

I hate village person, its This Town, the Beltway, or Very Serious People.

And I've noticed a tonal shift but I think the concern trolling as only crept up in ACA coverage, but that seems to be all wonkblog talks about.

I think the post is stupid to pass this up. The explain me this articles are huge now especially on Facebook (the 5 things you need to know about...), having a whole team dedicated to that could be huge.

His site wouldn't be a blog like Sullivan and anytime people use _figures I put it on the low end of that, if it was something outrageous like 50 million the author would use that.

I wouldn't say it's against the interest of many arguing against it unless you're saying a net macroeconomic boost is good for everyone which is true on the whole but not individually.

They don't need full employment and could feel negative effects god forbid their dollar menu selection goes down. It's class warfare, the upper and middle vs the poorer. But it seems only class warfare when its directed at the rich.

BTW let's just have a guaranteed income. getting businesses to deliver needed goods is really inefficient. Minimum wage and employer based health care both face this issue its making something needlessly complicated and easier for people to attack.

I've found that Wonkblog has gotten increasingly unreadable lately. It's adopted that annoying as shit clickbait-y style that grates on me big time.

Yup. What is it with that topic and getting people to oppose their own interests?

My understanding of that logic is: I don't make minimum wage, "they" make minimum wage. I work hard. "They" are lazy and uneducated. "They" will get a raise, I won't get a raise. This cannot be fair. I will vote against it.

The subject line of this thread is so out-dated. In typical form, the GOP made hyperbolic statements and predictions . . . in reality . . . no one even remembers it happened.
Getting rid of the filibuster for judges & appointments.

The thing with Ezra Klein is all a misunderstanding. He asked for eight digits but two of those are the .00 at the end of his asking price.

I've come to the conclusion I prefer people who disagree with raising the minimum wage due to weird values judgement over a libertarian who has a magical belief in the market. At least you can try to convince the former they're values are wrong. Dealing with the latter is like battling a religious belief.

It's not like battling a religious belief, it IS battling a religious belief. The only difference between a hardcore libertarian and a Catholic is one has a church and the other doesn't.

You'll never hear me disagree with that. Everything in my experience shows me you are dead right.

I've had economics professors treat them like a evolutionary biology teacher would treat creationists as well.

smh at Gillibrand and Booker.

And Coons, what the fuck?

And Coons, what the fuck?

Gilibrand has always been an Israel slappy, and Booker is running for president sooner rather than later.

It comes down to money and influence. These senators aren't threatening a war 90% of the US doesn't want because they're concerned about Iran. They're threatening war in order to guarantee campaign donations and ensure that future nomination chances aren't scuttled due to being "soft on Israel's security."

And Coons, what the fuck?

It's the region, Israel has a whole lot of support in the NY-tristate area. No one wants to have to run against all that money.

That said I am disappointed in both of my senators, normally I'm pretty happy with them :(

I can only hope this is vote pandering and they are not really serious. A good peace deal with Iran would be a great thing for the USA, for Iran, and for the world.

*sigh* Minimum Wage thread.

No wonder the GOP has half the country following them despite their batshit fucking insane policies. Most people actually buy into voting against their own interest.

Conservative talking heads on fox need are insane and keep talking about how they are going to win the senate and make gains in the house. They are still in that bubble from romney's campaign.

I wonder how many of the people in this thread lamenting how people can be made to act against their own interests are Working Class but oppose Socialism.

It's the whole mantra conservatives use. Their view of economics boils down to "common sense" which is an argument I always see. "Wages go up prices go up it's common sense let's look at the past 100 years and ignore real reasons why prices go up".

Re: minimum wage thread

Wouldn't it be nice if we passed a law that mandated a rigorous understanding of economics in public schools?

Hell, I'd even start in elementary school (4th grade?) and it get progressively more in-depth with relating to their every day lives the higher in grade you got.

In these classes, they'd also learn about buying houses, paying bills, taxes, loans, advanced banking, refinancing, managing money etc. Basically life essentials.

How in-depth and "complicated" is determined by age and grade.

Those threads are always depressing. On the upside NY just upped it's minimum wage to $8, which is $2.10 less than the original proposal was. It's three quarters an hour more and people complain it'll drive them out of business. Thank god I don't read the Post or the WSJ editorial section, I'd probably blow my brains out.
