Weirdly, I kinda trust Howard Stern the most on what the President is mentally going through, seeing as how well he knows him and how candid he can kinda be. Trump has a fragile ego and was roped into something he was not prepared for, and it's taking a huge toll on his mental health as the inevitable happens and he becomes more and more hated by everyone. Including Hollywood, which he talks shit about but used to live for.
I think when people say something like "He's even more unhinged than usual, there must be something behind the scenes going on", it's probably just an old man in over his head unable to deal with the simple fact that he's president. And it's hard to imagine it gets better from here, unless he at some point gives up, pulling a late second term reagan and basically giving all control over to his advisors.
