I think that image is just pointing out the social stigma still attached to woman who embrace their sexuality as a valid part of who they are and who advocate sexual liberalism and equality for women.

Bold women like Miley Cyrus and Christina Aguilera are constantly dragged through the media mud for being whores, when in their personal lives they're anything but. Miley has been in a pretty stable relationship with that Hemsworth boy for years and Xtina, the apparent Queen of Sluts, actually spent the bulk of her career dating and subsequently married to the same man. But, because they advocate sexual equality through their music and image, they get the scarlet letter.

Meanwhile Taylor, who has been with enough men to staff a TJI Fridays at this point, gets held up as some sort of virginal ideal despite all of this, because she promotes a false image of an innocent flower that couldn't be less in line with her personal life. It's kinda funny in a sad way...

It all has to do with image. The Stripped era destroyed Xtina's image (in terms of being good, pure, etc.). Miley's image has been going downhill since Cant Be Tamed. Taylor's remains pure, innocent, and classy. Sure, she's a giant ole slut who can't keep a steady relationship, but the way she's portrayed is anything but.

Is it fair? No. Can anything be done about it? Doubtful.

I wish we could just stop judging people.

Except Katy Perry. Travie McCoy, Russell Brand and John Mayer? A string of men almost as vile as her string of singles

I think that, ultimately, Taylor's image is the more detrimental. She's clearly not this delicate flower that's just a bundle of good manners and god-given talent her brand desperately wants us to believe, but she'll keep promoting this Victorian fuckery regardless.

Sure, pop stars like Xtina and Miley dress in tacky outfits and sometimes sing raunchy lyrics, but their overall brand and image is of sexual equality (and responsibility) for girls. The idea that boys shouldn't be allowed to do and be anything that girls can't. I vastly prefer that.

Is it fair? No. Can anything be done about it? Doubtful.

I'm not sure, things are already better than they were just a decade ago. It's just something, as with many things, that's going to take time.

Oh well, it's their own fault. Many artists have promoted female empowerment through song (Aretha, Queen Latifah, Pink, Shania Twain, Elle Varner to name a few) without resorting to ironically objectifying themselves for men in the process.

Instead, what this new wave of "feminists" does is use the guise of Grrl Power to really just serve as titillating masturbatory aids for the same sneering misogynists whose "man's world" they're claiming to rebel against.

Don't even pretend that Xtina and Miley aren't thinking about men more than women in their desperate attempts at edginess.

Stripped era DEFINED Xtina's image. It is her greatest era, and many girls still look at it for inspiration.

You know that's not what I meant..

And honestly, everything else about Taylor's life and image is squeaky clean. She doesn't wear revealing clothes, she doesn't hardcore party, she's very nice and polite, etc. One thing I REALLY admire about her is her stance on political views. She chooses not to disclose them because she doesn't want people to be influenced by what she says or does. Meanwhile, tons of other celebrities love to shove their opinions down our throats as if their political opinions matter or as if they're very knowledgeable.

Fair point, although I think there's something to be said about women who advocate female empowerment by embracing the very things "proper women" are trained against, including flagrant sexuality. It's what made Prime-Madonna so compelling. Sure, there's a male enticement component, but that's not the end-all.

I don't follow Miley enough to say for her, but I think that Christina has more than proven at this point that everything she does she does for her, and not the approval of the men around her (what few there are). Especially lately.

Yeah, but the reason it worked for Madonna is that she didn't just traipse around in lingerie and coo about how terrible it is that women are judged based on antiquated notions of virginal femininity.

What she did was titillate, and then confuse, and then ultimately throw it all back in everyone's faces. Xtina and Miley stalled at Step 1, so whatever message they were peddling was hopelessly muddled underneath all that flashy MTV-friendly pornography.

Do you think Taylor dates men for publicity so that she can make her hit music inspired by said people? That's a shady image.

I'm not sure about how you think Xtina stalled. Female empowerment has been a major part of her career and discography. Xtina hasn't had an androgyny phase like Madge, though. Is that what you mean?

EDIT: Madge has also been dragged through the mud by the media for being a slut for most of her career, and for a lot of the same reasons. It's really only feminists, her fans, and people who pay more than just brief attention to popular music and culture that understand what a huge part she played in contemporary feminism.

i always love these long, opinionated posts of yours. *.* i usually tend to agree with them, apart from the parts about xtina.

i would want to go to the btwball but the problem is many songs from BTW will be sung.
she's not coming to my city ;_;

Oh, a false stan.

The TRINITY™ rejects your submission.

I stanned for BTW as much as I could.

I hated both the lead single and EoG but I kept telling myself and everyone, "You'll all see! When Scheiße is released and dominates, we'll see the return of SlayGa!" I listened to her first 7 singles everyday, in the fetal position, reminiscing the days when the thought of a new Gaga single excited me. Now it made me scared, confused, and lost. She would choose Scheiße right? It's the songs the fans wanted, and was the easily the best song on the album.

And then ...

Not even MTN. Not even HML. Not even GH. Not even Fashion of His Damn Love. Y&I. The song she claimed would "never be a single." This was where I drew the line, and realized Gaga may have peaked with TF/M. ;___;

Judas and Scheiße were the best songs of last year, though. HML and GH are bops, too.

I didn't know anything about Taylor Swift's private life before reading the above posts, but I always felt there was something really, really fake about her.

Fake images are part of the game, but a fake image of 'moral, pure, wholesome' girl-next-door is more grating to me for some reason. Find her more annoying than ever now, tbh.

Does anyone here stan for Taylor Swift?

I totally understand your complaint about You and I. I felt it wasn't a very good single (how did it perform) but I think that it helped open up Gaga to a whole new audience that probably wouldn't have even considered listening to her music in the first place.

One of the most funnest moments of the BTW Ball dates I attended was when everyone was singing along to You and I and swaying their arms. There wasn't a single person sitting in the seats and everyone in the pit was just really getting into it. I guess it made the song grow on me a little bit more, but I admit it's not my favourite off Born This Way.

I guess my feelings towards it are a bit biased because of my experiences with the tour, but I do agree in that ultimately there were so many better songs she could've put out and given the video treatment from the album.

I think this is how most gaga stans felt during that time.

I'm probably not the biggest stan here, but I don't think her having a lot of ex-boyfriends compromises her image.
