Lauryn Hill Blames 'Girl Men' on Society's Downfall
American singer, rapper and actress Lauryn Hill is making some new enemies, and for once they do not include the Internal Revenue Service.
She is now being accused of having anti-LGBT lyrics in her new song ‘Neurotic Society’, released three days before she went to jail for tax evasion.
In a list of examples of how society is crumbling around her, Hill blames ‘social transvestism’, ‘drag queens’ and a lyric people are interpreting as ‘girl men’.
According to Hill, they are just as bad as ‘pimps’, ‘pushers’, and ‘serial criminals’.
Monica Miller at BET.com has accused the singer of responding to one social ill by perpetuating another.
She states: ‘Whether or not Hill is merely using these comments as examples of the smokescreens and sleight-of-hands that pervade this 'Neurotic Society' is unclear.
‘Beyond intention, these sorts of statements suggest that society is in a shambles because it’s been taking too many cues from the LGBTQ community, acting like “girl men,” “drag queens” and “transvestites.”
‘Is her beef with oppressive society or is her issue with people who don’t abide by a traditional family structure?’
Out Magazine’s Andrew Belonsky agrees, saying the ‘drag queens’ line comes immediately after a smear against ‘pride fiends’ – as in the people who attend Gay Pride events.
Some say the line ‘girl men’ could also be interpreted as ‘guru men’, he notes, so that line could not be homophobic at all.
Either way, she’s definitely come a long way from Sister Act 2.
