PS3 @ E3: "Change The Gam3"

I got a call this afternoon from a co-worker who'd flown down to L.A. a couple of days in advance of the show. He passed along word that, immediately upon exiting LAX, there is a billboard with the iconic Triangle, Circle, X, Square PlayStation symbols and the text "Change The Gam3," where the "e" in "game" is a "3" styled after the "2" in "PS2."

So... it's officially on.

It would be HIGHlarious if the PS3 design ends up looking like that 1989 Nokia camera posted weeks ago. By HIGHlarious I mean I would end up taking my shoe off and hit myself in the one droopy sack repeatedly.

you can see, each of the "shapes" makes up a part of the iconic PlayStation pad symbols. Square, Triangle, Circle, Square. It's not really indistinguishable at all, although I'm sure most random people wouldn't get it.

Even if you don't get it (and I don't know why they only partially reveal each part of the shape either), I'm just telling you what it is.
 
omg teh shapes are sorta like my old toddler toys!

PS3 = kiddie!
Revolution = genuinely kiddie!
Xbox360 = for grown hairy men with unsatiable lust for sexy women!
 
Was just going to post about this campaign - arrived to LAX and hour ago and now in The Standard enjoying a beer.

Details:

- Big billboards with dissolving / partial triangle/square/cross/circle symbols
- Text using PS2 and PSP font - "Welcome Chang3"
- The last letter 3 is red

My interpretation:

Dissolving controller symbols + "Welcome Chang3" = New Controller

Xbox 360: Can't wait. Stuff from Japan looks promising. Excitement level: 3/5
Revolution: Clinging to a very small hope that Nintendo might snap back to reality this time around. Excitement level: 4/5
PS3: Gonna rock the world ten times over, pretty much guaranteed. Excitement level: 42/5

Three more days!

:lol I think that'd be about the perfect way to one-up MS in the attempt to be as underwhelming as possible. I think your interpretation is interesting, but Sony's been using the controller symbols in their marketing to generally represent the playstation brand for awhile now.

Underwhelming? Seriously, I've been one of the most keen Xbox 360 anticipants, thinking that Sony is a mess. Still, seeing this campaign while sitting in the taxi, just landed for E3, gave me the shivers. Sony knows marketing.

With the first billboard I was like "Hmm... pretty cool layout". With the second billboard, it was "Hey, those are the PS symbols" and with third billboard "Holy shit, that's a red three there!!! PS3!!!!". Then I sent about 10 messages to people in my company about seeing the first PS3 campaign.

Compared to the understated stylishness and coolness of this campaign, the Colony video with a "cool" J Allard saying "This is YOUR colony" felt like an awkward wannabe. Watching through the whole clip makes me feel embarrased for the poor engineers made act "rad".

Sony is the king of style and branding.

It's a cool idea, I'm surprised they'd publically put up teasers for it :)

im such a marketing/advertising slut.

in about 48 hours i went from guaranteed buying 360 at launch to possibly waiting for ps3.
