PS3 - same controller as PS2?

I guess they're gonna stick with it, but hopefully not add too many new bells and whistles. Maybe two additional buttons (not sure were they're gonna fit) and they might also change the position of the analog sticks (but probably not) or get rid of the dpad? Don't see much else that could be changed. Really shows how great the design of the Playstation controller was.

Oh and hopefully it will be wireless out of the box.

It better not be the same. Part of the fun of new generations of consoles, is the controller.

They got a way w/ it last time, and added enough extra functionality for me to let them slide. Not this time though. Nuh uh.

Honestly though, if they just made the thing fully wireless w/ a cradle to let it recharge while not in use, I won't complain.

I like the button placement, but I've personally always hated both analogs being central. I'm not a fighting game fan really, and I don't play many other games that use it, the D-pad just seems like a total waste of space to me -- but it is a nice, comfortable size and shape. I'd prefer the left analog where the D pad is now.

I wish they'd change how it feels too. Change the rear that no one cares about.

The Gamecube pad is probably the most comfortable to hold for me, with the Xbox S pad just behind. Nintendo always make great pads, but I think they made some poor button choices with this one that stung them in some game ports (ie. two extra triggers, and more analog buttons please. And a bigger, less nippley, nipple)

Needs to be this controler and change r2 and l2 to xbox style triggers.

Just get one of these...

:lol I thought I was the only one that called them that.

They should improve the analog sticks which are really bad for fps,get rid of the old D-pad for a more comfortable version and give to one of the shoulder buttons a real analog excursion.Of course wireless and you have Dual Shock 3.

I don't want the controllers to change significantly. I need dual analog, a d pad, 4 face buttons, and some shoulder buttons on a controller that fits comfortably into my hand. I'd hate to see a drastic departure from that model.

If Sony simply makes the PS3 controller wireless and gives it the current PS2 controller size but with the wireless functionality and small battery usage of the Logitech controller I'd be set.

^^

Hmmm... Why didn't I think of that!? :rolleyes

IMO, same kinds of controllers = same kinds of games.

We need a revolution.

I hope they get rid of those silly icon coded buttons and use different colours, shapes, sizes and letters instead. There's nothing else seriously wrong with the pad.

hope they,

- make it wireless
- use a better dpad, it just sucks for 2D fighters
- move the sticks a little further apart

Oh, and adjustable tension on the analogs. I needs that.

Better executed analog face buttons. The shapes on the buttons is part of their logo now, so don't count on that going anywhere.

I hate the dualshit, they better move the analog sticks to a place where my thumbs are fucking each other and place the left analog stick to a more natural spot

I'd like to see analog triggers with tension resistance ... ie: force feedback, so when you're pushing down on the gas pedal on in a racing game, you get "resistance" tension just like you would when driving a real car.

I will be dissapointed if they use the same controller again. They need to change some things.

Also there's a good chance the Playstation 3 will also come with Eye Toy functionality built in, so that adds more control options.

Yes, its time for a new controller with some new ideas. I'll be disapointed if its the same controller.

The Dual Shock layout is perfect. I've never had issues with the analog placement at all, I've never understood why people claim it is uncomfortable.

A few things that would be neat though - MAYBE an actual trigger, i haven't decided on that one yet, I've yet to miss them and fail to see what great use they have beyond racers, and if you're that hardcore about racers or flight simulators buy a damn wheel or joystick already. Wireless would be nice, and adjustable tension on the analog sticks would be cool too.

Yeah I know... but even after 8 years of using the damn thing I still can't always remember which one of the buttons is circle and which one is the square. And when some of my more casual gamer friends drop by they always seem to have trouble telling the buttons apart.

Not to mention Japanese games use different buttons as "ok" and "cancel" buttons than western ones.

What was the negcon's gimmick anyway? Can you twist it for shifting in racers or something?

You twist to turn. Why the hell would you want to shift by twisting?

^^

Up a gear twist one way, down a gear the other.

Simple really. Not practical though as there's no analog and the d-pad on the NegCon is some sh!t (too shallow).

Well I'm sure the button configuration will remain pretty much the same, saying that for backwards compability. But they may add 1-2 functions and redesign it significally. I'd love to see the shoulder buttons Dreamcast/Xbox style on the back.

Change the button names, really, multi-syllable button names are just so stupid. They've made FAQ reading a chore. But oooh they're so STYLISH. Screw that Sony, they're less functional. "What's the code?" "It's TRI-AN-GLE, SQU-ARE, CIR-CLE, CIR-CLE, TRI-AN-GLE, X, TRI-FUCKYOUSONY-AN-GLE".

I prefer the left analog stick in primary position.

Holy hell does the D pad suck.

I like triggers more than shoulder buttons, a mix of both would be very nice.

And son of a bitch drop analog buttons that feel digital, or make them feel analog somehow . The DS2 may have 256 DIFFERENT DEGREES OF PRESSUUURE. But I can only feel two dammit on and OFF. I'm completely helpless in games that use it. I JUST WANTED TO CHOKE THE GUARD SNAKE, NOT SNAP HIS HEAD OFF.

sony will probably tweak the controller so you cannot use the ps2 controllers.

ergo

they can sell more stuff to consumers.

I'm probably right too

You could use the DS1 on the PS2. I dont think they are that shaddy.

Feel free to crucify me, but I'd like to see a trackball or something somewhere on the controller. It'd be nice for FPSes

I don't think they will introduce any significant changes. Sony fans like the DS and other than wireless Nintendo hasn't really done anything they can rip off this gen.

Personally, I'd like to see them at least redesign the analog sticks to provide a better grip.

It'd better not be the same for PS3. The d-pad is most in need of a makeover. Give me a d-pad like that of the Sega Saturn controller. I'd also like to see six face buttons and only 1 set of L & R buttons.

God I hope not. Those analog sticks NEED TO GO and be replaced with something better. I wouldn't mind analog triggers, either.

The only D-Pad worth anything is the NGPC one

I'd like to see wireless with a cradle like DCB suggested...I would also like to see six proper face buttons, 2 current style shoulder buttons, and 2 triggers

A trackball would be flamed to high hell, but I could see lots of games that couldn't be done on consoles before become a reality...maybe :b

I don't want rumble. I want Force Feedback

Swapping the position of the trigger/analog means nothing to me...they could leave that or swap it and I'd be fine

Yeah, totally, a trackball!! Wait, what??

Did you just say you wanted a trackball on your console controller for playing FPSes? :lol

Wait right there, I'll be back with a cross and some nails... :D

I'll start off by saying what I think then what I hope.

#1 I think that it will be wireless.
#2 I think that it won't have any extra buttons.
#3 I think it'll match the color of the PS3.
#4 I think that color will be standard black.

#1 I hope that they change the analog sticks to match the Xbox analog stick.
#2 I hope they switch the positions of the left analog stick and the directional pad.
#3 I hope they don't add triggers.

DaCoCoBrava I disagree with you completely. Sony simply followed the evolution of the most successful controllers and it's gamepads.

The NES controller evolved into the SNES controller and gained two extra face buttons, and shoulder buttons, not to mention a better and smoother shape.

The PS1 added two more shoulder buttons, and eventually analog sticks which also act as L3 and R3 and also better and smoother shape.

The PS2 simply added onto something that was already seen as perfect.

You dont need to change it at all. I didn't even think of a cradle. =/

As for PS3 controller, wireless, swap left stick and dpad position, replace L2/R2 with triggers, and slap on a microphone like Famicom controller 2.

Dream Controller

Great concept, but I bet it can't be done for the simple issue of patents and copyright infringement, but that wold be the controller of the gods (forged on Mt. Olympus no less). ;)

screw wireless, keep the DS design, swap R2 and L2 buttons for analog triggers an gimme force feedback on the analog sticks. Bam.

If it is wireless, I will personally hunt down and kill whoever made that decision. If I can't find out who it was, I'll start with the people suggesting it on this forum.

By all means release a wireless version as well (with a charging cradle - no batteries) but don't dare make it the standard controller. Not even Nintendo sunk that low.

Change for the sake of change is worthless. Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft should have a breakthrough game concept in mind before forcing potentially worthless control innovations on people.

If any new suggested feature doesn't solve a problem or make feasible previously unfeasible gameplay concepts, then leave that shit out.

That's not a bad idea. A way to power on the console from the controller would be nice too.

I'd rather they included a remote as I would rather the on/off button be on that than the controller.

Sony should change the controller late in the process, adding one or two buttons over what the Dual Shock 2 already has. If Microsoft and Nintendo go early with similar controller hardware, a late announcement of those extra buttons after the others have committed could give Sony an extra edge with the third parties, pressuring them to either develop some titles exclusively for them (while they still have one gen of dominance left) or at least to have extra features or controls for their version that have to be whittled from the others' (ala the hassle over Gamecube having one fewer button).

I wouldn't mind them moving the d-pad and getting rid of the stupid spongey analog buttons that maybe 4 games use (poorly) and put DC / Cube style put in triggers on the back.

Spongy? Most people cant tell the difference from the old digital buttons and I couldnt tell you what game that features driving that DIDNT support the analog buttons well.
