No one even developers thought they will deliver 8GB of GDDR5. Frankly it is still unknown how they did it. (Stacking ? And if yes whats with heat?)

I believe also that 8GB of GDDR5 ram was super late to include (probably this or last moth) so most insiders wouldn't even know any of it.

Can't believe people still can't wrap their hard around the 10 year life cycle concept.


PS2 sold, was sold and lightly supported for a couple of years after the PS3 released, such is the idea with a 10 year cycle.

It is not one console for 10 years before the other comes out.

Yep.

PS3 will last about 10 years, but 3 of those years will be under PS4's shadow. It's the same with PSone, PS2.

Its only used when activated. I think it was mentioned all resources are given to game performance until you pause it for other functions.
 
Is it possible they haven't shown the console due to the fact they are still sorting out cooling for the extra ram, as it seems to have been a recent change, and will the upgrade affect how many they will have at launch
 
8GB of GDR5... holy shit... It would have been very easy to stop at 4GB and say "that'll do". I'm glad they didn't, but that's going to be one pricey console.
 
I am crapping myself with what P* could make a Metal Gear Revenenenenegence 2 look like and do with 8GB GDDR5 as a starting point

Why are the gaming press not shouting about this more from the rooftops? This is a huge step up. As another posted, if the gaming press arent enthused about this the mainstream press sure as hell wont be and thats a big shame

Anyone expecting specifics about price etc are daft. Im surprised we got the specs we did.
 
I wonder how much of the 8gb is for the actual game. With the OS taking a bit and the system constantly recording the last 15 mins of play time and using the sharing upload feautures. As well as the new feature of just jumping into ur game anytime without booting up. I wouldnt be surprised if only 4gb is for gaming.

Not much. Until recently the PS3 "only" had 4GB, and the reported amount taken by the OS was 512MB, and there were already reports of the share functionality.
 
If MS matches the G it still won't matter because of a bloated OS with kinect garbage plus ads on it taking up so much space limiting developer creativity. Meanwhile Sony uses a slick streamlined core gamer OS, which will get even better with updates which gives devs more room to work with. Amirite gaf :)
 
When he said 8GB GDDR5 I literally found myself sitting in bed with my hands in the air shouting "YES! YES! WHAT? YES!" and I totally stopped listening to his next words. Fantastic hardware news :-D

They did mention that they've been working on real-time video compression. H.265 is supposed to be coming soon, if memory serves, and might let them get away with more in less space.
 
Just to clear one thing up: Unified memory in PCs is considered bad because the GPU can only use the slower DDR system memory. In the PS4, the flip is true, the CPU gets access to the yummy GDDR5. In this case, shared/unified isn't an insult.
 
Pertaining to OS, I do wonder if it will have two states even now like the Vita. One while playing games and another while not and if so how much of a savings of RAM we may see.

Lead designer behind PS4 already said that live on stage but people didn't catch that.

I'm honest, I never expect 8GB of GDDR5 to happen. It basically means that every multiplat is going to be better on PS4, no matter what. No reallocation or much coding needed to make a Durango game looking better on PS4. That's what the specs and the components suggest.

Then again, I think 4GB GDDR5 was perfectly reasonable, with rumours suggested that Sony already doubled it from 2 to 4 GB. I'm not sure why Sony sets itself in a unfavourable financial situation compared to the Durango. It's a gamble they either win or lose big time.

I wouldn't say no matter what. We don't know what the differences are in terms of CPU/GPU versus Durango.
 
This is the first games console where I feel like RAM won't be a constraint for developers. That means great things to me and hopefully Microsoft reacts accordingly.
