Yes becuase the context surrounding where we are relative to what the PS3 was doing at this point is important.

It's like people are only willing to take in to account how the PS3 finished when we have these discussions, but the reality was that it was getting meme'd on hard and not selling too well (vs the competition) for various reasons all throughout the first half of its lifecycle.

Like i said the existence is enough, because there is always the threat of a failure gen and the recovery of the competitor. Sony fucked up the PS3 and knows this very well. As long as there is an Xbox, not matter how few consoles they sell Sony will make an effort. But i guess you will see what i mean in the future. I give Xbox hardware max 10 years if at all.

People are being intellectually dishonest when they attempt to insist the PS3 was better. Pretty much every 3rd party game ran like Cyberpunk did on the ps4. 3rd party games were skipping the system. The last remnant (a square Enix jrpg! ) was announced for the system but was subsequently cancelled. Sony's exclusives and new IP, while showing promise (which was then realised in sequels), failed to live up to expectations. Exclusive games were also getting cancelled during that time (8 days).

But yet, somehow people want to go back to relive that and would rather have those first 4 years over the PS5's first 4 years? Yeh fucking right.

At the end of the day, many prefer playing on a console. XBOX is dead and Nintendo is still figuring out HD-ready tech. Playstation wins by default.

Even if PS Studios sink in the coming years, most people will play third-party games on PS.

PS5 had cross-gen titles like Miles Morales and Sackboy. The only game that actually was exclusive was....a remake: Demon's Souls and and demo: Astro's Playroom. (i think i'm not forgetting anything?)

You guys underestimate Playstation's brand. People will buy it because it's the next shiny new Playstation. If it plays better than PS5, it's enough.

Amazon, Google and Apple all had opportunities to compete in the gaming console space and for one reason or another, they shit the bed from orbit. Too focused on the next thing instead of the now thing.

Sony isn't broken or bad just extremely safe. Good hardware with a friendly price (thats a lot of console for $399) but what chances are they taking with software. Maybe Covid fucked everything up more than I think.

GTA6 and the collapse of Xbox will give them a big boost in 2025.

And that’s despite their first party 2025 lineup looking relatively meh.

When you are far ahead of the pack, you can afford a few hiccups and still stay ahead.

Nintendo and PC are fine competition. I wouldn't mind someone else coming to replace Xbox though, as long as it's not a shitty streaming device.

I honestly don't think the industry has enough space for a traditional console manufacturer to come in.

Competition will either present itself as new/old entrants trying for new categories (VR or Cloud) or old competitors trying to take marketshare from each other by crossing over.

This makes sense, since this is pure, unadjusted hardware dollar sales the main PS5 SKU is $500 and the pro is $700.

It's still a real accomplishment though, since this means that they are selling a lot of units at those prices. It just doesn't mean that the PS5 is more successful than, say, the PS2, relative to inflation.
