PS5 Pro Technical Seminar with Mark Cerny

Not using dual-issue either. I figured it was too much work with the compilers for devs, so it makes sense they didn't bother with it. I was hoping there would be something here to perhaps leverage it somehow, but it ain't happening. Too bad, but oh well.

Cerny made the right call by not having VOPD. It would be an hassle to have 2 shader codes for this generation, for a marginal performance improvement.
And it probably saved a bit of die space.

~"glad we made the time-intensive position to develop our own ml"

= We knew amd was going to drag ass.

The end was most interesting when he talked about helping amd. Some of that should end up back in their gpus. Any for RDNA4? Eh, probably not.

There are more than a few pointers Cerny gave in the presentation that MS should write in stone and hang on the developer/engineer room.

Like, in essence, not making developer's lifes more complicated but simpler and EASIER.

One would think that after Series S, they would learn.

But seeing as how EVERYTHING is gonna be an Xbox, and add a handheld and a high powered PConsole and a Grandma with a kitchen sink, weeeeeeell..

Yeah, I mean. For better or worse Cerny is a game developer, so the PS4 and PS5 were designed with developers in mind by a developer.

Another interview with Cerny.

The main focus of your presentation was arguably PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), so let's kick off with that. You previously commented on when the PlayStation 5 Pro project started internally, but when did you begin working on PSSR?

Mark Cerny:
We started on PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution at roughly the same time as we started on the hardware itself. Though, the neural network we are using today is something that we came up with, I believe, in late 2021.
How has the development of the PlayStation 5 Pro hardware evolved over the past few years in tandem with PSSR?

Mark Cerny:
The hardware definitely came first, because you can't know that your neural network is implementable unless you understand a bit about the hardware that it's going to be running on top of. So, simply put, in 2020 we did early hardware work. In 2021, we did more detailed hardware work and fully kicked off the PSSR project.
Speaking about Super Resolution, does it require per-game training as the first version of NVIDIA Deep Learning Super Sampling, or is it more of a general model like DLSS 2.0 and later?

Mark Cerny:
It's generalized training.
Can you talk about roughly how long it takes to implement PSSR compared to NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, or Intel XeSS?

Mark Cerny:
It's almost a drop-in replacement for the other strategies. The difficulty is that game engines tend to evolve along with the Super Resolution or the upscaling strategy that they're using. So, if you're trying to add something in after the fact that the game was not developed with, then there's a bit of rejiggering of the game engine that may be needed. Much of the time I think the developers spent bringing it over was the logistics of where in their pipeline they're going to insert PSSR.
Some PS5 Pro titles have implemented AMD Fidelity FX Super Resolution Frame Generation. Have there been any complications with that running in tandem with PSSR?

Mark Cerny:
No, PSSR is Super Resolution, so whatever strategy a game has for frame generation should be completely orthogonal.

Why in the world are they doing this more than a month after the console released? This is weird as fuck, every who cares already bought the thing and has beaten 2 or 3 games on it. There are already a million hours of Youtube videos dissecting every game, wtf is the purpose of this media tour? Sales must have dropped to negative zero after the diehards bought their preorders.

The first 20 seconds are already pathetic: "This is a bits and bites talk with no game footage at all". Sure, THIS is how you sell and overpriced useless pice of hardware to your gaming audience. On the other hand, we already know there is nothing to sell anymore. He's not showing game footage because the actual real word difference is miniscule and not worth the money. This "technical seminar" is not gonna help sell PS5 Pro's at all.

Who is this technical presentation even for?
For people with technical minds so apparently not you. Not everything is made for you and the world does not revolve around you. Many of us had questions about the design and this video answers several of those questions.

Because it was mostly about revealing their partnership with AMD on Amethyst, and to offer a general outline of their strategy going forwards.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
how is he ignoring it, wtf
Not Cerny, but people saying "it's the developers" so it's not a problem.
Maybe you guys are missing understanding me.
I expect Cerny to speak in his calming voice talking to them like you would a child and explaining to those developers how incompetent they are and ridicule and explain to them how to get good.

Another interview with Cerny.

Will Sony add Low Framerate Compensation or LFC to improve the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) experience on PS5 and PS5 Pro?

Mark Cerny:
There are ongoing discussions about where we should be taking VRR, and that's definitely part of those discussions.

Maybe trying to get ahead of new hardware being announced in January. We know Nvidia will announce new cards, and suspect AMD will too, along side new upscaling tech.

Nintendo is very likely to announce Switch 2 next month, and Valve seems to be getting close to releasing Deckard and more Steam OS powered devices. It seems Sony may want to keep PS5 Pro in discussion.

Can’t Git Gud

Cerny doesn't want to be there. He doesn't really answers anything. But I love when he says "it's mid gen refresh, bigger gup duh. ITS NOT THAT COMPLEX".
And here we are fighting over this shit when cerny just says as it is. It's a fucking perf improvement like new gpu. What the hell were you expecting lol.
edit: It's kinda a sickness of the internet era. Everything is downright disassembled and overanalyzed way way way wayyyyy too much.
I still like him. He kinda seems like he doesn't care lol
I get the feelings that this many modes and settings in some of pro games is certainly a failure.
Not a big fan myself of the alllll temporal future ;/ But at least pssr is cleaner than fsr2 crap.

I am playing my console on the same tv/monitor (lg c1) that's connected to my pc. Sitting in my secretlab chair. I was ALWAYS playing consoles on monitors like pc. Even back in 360 days.
So I always judged the image quality up close like pc.

That insomniac guy is downright creepy though. I don't like the fake shiny eyes he have
