PS6 Rumors Suggest Console Will Use AMD's UDNA Architecture

adamsapple

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Sony wouldn't want to be talking about a 2028 (four years out) product after just releasing one. Just a UDNA name turning into PS6 rumours is nonsense that's vaporware designed to prevent people from buying current products. That isn't Sony not wanting to look behind. It's whoever is driving this wanting people to wait.

Edit:

^ Case in point pushing this narrative exactly as I post it.

I don't think there will be console generation anymore when the ps6 release in 4 years. It will be blurring the separation actually. There is no reason for any game is 4 years that won't work and look OK on the base ps5.

Games still release on the current ps5, ps5 pro and the ps6. Games take longer to make, so exclusive to the ps6 is out of the question. Choosing a console to play on is like Choosing a low end to high end pc now. It is that simple.

Also, I don't the price is going to fall below the pro.

Ok let’s talk about the handheld. Will this be another streaming device like Portal or will it be native handheld like Vita? Will there be cartridges? Will it play ps4 and ps5 titles 1080p good frame rate? I am very excited with this handhelds news

Whatever it is, it's fucking stupid. They need to focus.

Considering the pace of evolution in CPUs (unless you have Apple’s prices and budget), I think most of us would take the equivalent of the 9950X3D with a decent clock speed bump over Zen 2 in PS5 (16 cores CPU and 3D VCache on both internal clusters as well as covering the GPU) then try to chase even newer architectures.

They may go Zen 5 or Zen 5C if they want lower power and even lower density, but I do not know if they need a much faster CPU than that to be honest. Zen 6 depending what it targets might be possible but less likely and Zen 7 even less so. I do expect a Zen 5+ next year and Zen 6 the year after… maybe Zen 6C again after that.

PS6 is due is about 4 years, maybe less…

We will see what more the GPU requires and if the GPU and CPU are on the same die or just the same package. This might influence the use of a newer core if it is cheaper for AMD that way.

In no world is Sony putting a CPU from 2024 into a console releasing in 2027 at the earliest, not going to happen.

It will be Zen 7 most likely.

This would be fucking awful. Terrible. Horrendous.

Don't you people realise that it would be even worse than the Series S and PC ports in terms of holding back the generation??
That's because it was poorly thought out by Microsoft + they put themselves in a corner with the launch parity clause. The various PC handhelds that exist aren't holding anything back.

More like Steam Deck. And yeah, 1080p might be it. Sony finally stopped the lunacy of putting a 4k screens on their flagship Xperia phones.

There's no way to think it out correctly because it's a bad idea from the start. Nintendo consolidated their dev pipeline by doing a hybrid console for a reason. Resources are getting waste trying to apply to different SKUs, and PC is included in that 1000%.

Series S I get but how are PC ports holding back the generation? They are outsourced to other developers and take ~2 years to do.

That's a rumour of the same calibre that the sun will rise tomorrow or EA will release new sports games next year.

Yeah ive pretty much given up hope of being impressed by AMD after seeing the pro. All that talk about amazing rt gains and architectural improvements and its once again rdna4 been underwhelming after the hype cycle like clockwork not to mention sony has decided to penny pinch and focus on immediate profits at the detriment of impressive hardware even on the pro. Amd has pretty much thrown in the towel gpu wise I was really hoping intel would come put swinging but so much for that..what a depressing time for gaming when only nvidia offers good tech but at bleeding prices.

Sony has to go 80+ CU's at 3GHZ and PT is a fucking must this time
Sony has to go 1TB of bandwidth and 32GB is a fucking must this time

But y'all still gonna refuse to pay more than 500$ for this. Y'all want top tier specs for 500$ every gen, that ain't gonna work anymore.

Reality/Fact: All of those resources can be going towards bolstering or speeding up or enhancing the software for the actual console that Sony lives on. Spending 2 years of precious time and money for ports that'll sell a max of 3 million (and with the PSN requirement likely much less) at dilapidated prices that get cut by 30% because of the Steam tax is fucking foolish.

Speculation/Leak: You can't convince me that the developers aren't trying to account for easier PC ports as they're making these games. It's the same principle as cross-gen titles. There are a lot of PCs out there that aren't as powerful as the PS5 or the Pro. Given that the Insomniac leak already shows us that Wolverine development is being weighed down by a future PC port that Insomniac is most likely not even going to be handling, it's practically undeniable.

That's just going to get worse with a handheld. Sony may as well be running and 3rd party publisher at this rate.

I really hope this is true. PS5 came 3 years after PS4 Pro. I feel like we need the extra year. Games take longer to make and drop last gen versions. We need longer not shorter gens.

This is a reality today already. What is 1 more? Especially one that Sony will make porting games to easy, bordering on trivial.

One more degree of kissing PS3-PS4 1st party exclusive qualify goodbye is a huge, huge cost.

What resources? As I said, outsourced to other studios. Nobody at the Sony first party is porting the game. Ragnarok was done by 4 developers from a third party studio over a 18 month period. Financially the cost of these ports are also no burden. $2 million for a port that nets $50-$70 million just makes sense. Nixxes (a porting specialist) was purchased specifically to reduce those porting costs and further take the burden away from other Sony developers, and it’s paying off for PS5 gamers as well, as they can now port/remaster older titles.

The Wolverine leak has a playable PC build, but that doesn’t usually have anything to do with porting, it’s just how developer builds work. Having PC builds of games for developer testing has been a thing for almost two decades now, even for games that were developed with no intention of having a PC build, such as Bloodborne or even Nintendo titles (per the Gamefreak hack). As for developing for PC in mind, that’s debatable. Sony first party games are notoriously heavy to run on PC, with Ratchet requiring a dedicated new API and significantly stronger hardware then the PS5 to run at parity.

They put a Zen 2 in a late 2024 console…

I am not sure but a Zen 5 with 16 cores and 3D Cache shared by CPU and GPU would be to me preferable to a Zen 7 without 3D cache…

Why are people begging for 16c? It ain't happening, and ps6 won't need it. What would you even use an extra 8c16t for? Almost no games use more than 8c as it is, outside of non console games like sim games. 3d cache on an apu would be extraordinarily expensive. Zen 5 die is 70mm^2, a console APU is 250-300mm^2. I really don't see it being feasible based on cost. Even if they revert to L3 on top, that's still like 200+mm^2 of dummy silicon which is still going to make the wafer cost large.

Stop messing around tech nerds, and tell me what are the odds of that PlayStation handheld actually happening.

To be honest I'm more interess into a new OS HUD because PS5 Home screen is just total trash in comparison with PS4 and even PS3.
PS3 XMD is unmatch while PS4 is one of the best with themes and folders.
Even the PS3's XMB is a downgrade from the PS2(Japan-only model PSX) XMB.
No way in hell Sony launches a console in 2027-2028 with a CPU architecture that launched in 2024. Especially since AMD has already mentioned Zen6 and Zen7.
There's 4 years of lag with any console but it's only an issue when the 'console' is an x86 PC using off-the-shelf PC HW that anyone can compare to PC parts.
This is why Apple's done the opposite of Sony and abandoned x86 for esoteric - we can't compare Apple's M chips to other CPUs anymore.
Apple likely looked at success of the PS2 and noticed that it's the last console to have bespoke HW.

That ship has sailed. As I mentioned in another thread (?) it's all going to be crossgen games anyway. The PS6 is only happening in 2027 because of MS.

AMD released Zen2 in 2019. Same year PS5 was announced(released in 2020), and while they're using Zen2 and RDNA2 for their CPU and GPU architecture, the hardware is definitely not 'off-the-shelf'. Whatever is going into the PS6 is something Sony and AMD are architecting right now, just like they did Zen2.

I have never met Tim Cook, but I can 100% guarantee they did not look or consider the PS2 in their decision to build the M series Macbooks. Intel was dropping the ball so hard they had to leave them. Their options were to pay AMD, try to pay to for an x86 license, or use their experience designing and building SoCs for iPhone/iPad. They had been making the Apple Silicon SoCs since the iPhone 4 so they figured they could do it themselves.

4 years into this generation and we still get AAA PS4 and Xbox One games.
what do you think will happen next gen?

this will get more and more normal. we live in a world where games made with modern AAA game engines can be scaled down so dramatically that they run on phones.
as long as the CPU can run the logic, you can run the game... that's basically how it is now. the graphics can be scaled down like a motherfucker these days without much work.

A zen 4 or 5 in 2028 will be very cpu limited

It's not surprising, given their recent decisions on CPUs, that they've launched a flagship product with a CPU architecture from five years ago and managed to persuade consumers that this product is in fact "future-proof."
