PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Amazon does a very good job in customer service for everything bought through their website, even if it's not sold from Amazon themselves. I wouldn't worry about it.

Hello all... I just picked up a PSP, and had a friend of mine install the 5.00 M33-6 CFW on it, and am in love with the system by the screen size alone! (I love the widescreen, and the first thing I played on it was my ripped version of Sonic CD via Picodrive....such a dream come true!!!).

I did have some questions (forgive me if this sounds so n00bish): 1. Are there any Mac-compatible programs to rip my PS1 games (I have a few games I wanted to try, but don't have access to a Windows machine all the time).

2. Is there like a psp "wiibrew.org" equivalent to find the homebrew software you recommend? I sadly have only found warez sites, and don't want to support them, so any recommended site would be good.

3. Any must have software that I should have? like I said, I only have Picodrive on right now with Sonic CD...but anything else that's good let me know as well!

Thanks for your help!

3. IRSHELL (comes with a fuckton of great stuff) Search the above website also, you'll find tons of everything, media managers players, emulators, pretty everything you could think of.

Running off of Custom Firmware
From what I've read up, this Hello World proof only works on a PSP-1000, with PSP-2000 support coming soon. Running it on a PSP-3000 leads to a crash, but not to the execution of the Hello World routine.

Should be interesting to see what comes of this, but I'm not holding my breath.

From what I understand, a version for 3000 will be out soon.

5.03 Exploit Found - Unconfirmed Reports of PSP-3000 "Hello World"

Apparently more stuff is coming from this team in a few days. Set attention to "hopeful".

Son of a bitch... I knew this would happen soon after I bought a 2000, but didn't think it would be this soon. :| I wonder how long it will be before CFW runs. Hopefully it takes 6 months or more since I would have bought a 2000 a few days before CFW becomes available on the 3000. :\

PSN License Manager v0.1: backup and restore your PSN licenses

This little homebrew app from dev and QJ.NET forum member Light_AleX could prove useful to those who have different PSN accounts for each of the Network's supported regions. PSN License Manager lets you do three things:

* Backup your PSN license.
* Restore your PSN license.
* Delete the backup license on the memory stick.

The backup part means you don't have to overwrite your current license by using a different one. It's also all done on your PSP, so there's no need to connect to a PC (other that when you install the app, of course).

Haven't tried it yet but it looks rather useful.:D

Seems likes theres a related development with the tiff 5.03 explot

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wV21QqQmX_o

Someone has managed to get a kernal exploit to go a long with it.

It might, just maybe, be the tipping point. Setting expectations to "hmm, interesting".

*Side note to anyone, like me, who isn't very technical

Some folks were saying that the tiff exploit by itself would go no where without a kernal exploit, ie there would not PSP3000 homebrew crack, but it seems like someone cracked it, the tiff exploit with a kernal exploit, makes cracking a PSP much more likely, similar to cracking older PSP's back in the day. It's still a matter of see and wait, but it certainly looks more promising than it originally did, and that is a good thing for PSP owners wanting a slice of the homebrew pie.

I tracked the yourtube guy down, it's a guy called Davee, who's confirming the kmode/kernal exploit, is real.

Has anyone tried using an 8Gb Micro SD and Pro Duo adapter in their PSP? The pricing on these is ridiculous (presumably they're fakes, but I've never had a problem with the fake Pro Duo's I've got already).

Yea definitely because I realy do love the curves on the 3000. If cracked I would have to upgrade.

I've got 2 8gb micros in a Photofast Adapter. Works great. Formats to about 14.5GB

I'm getting 2 16bg micros + adapter for around $100... All the reviews and comments on the process I've read said it works fine. Can't wait for my 32gb stick!

This is a stupid question but I ask those. I am currently happily on 3.77 or something like that. Is there really a big benefit for me to upgrade? Also how hard would it be?

If you play a new game that requires a higher firmware than what you're currently using, the savegame(s) tied to it will be unreadable once you do upgrade. Best way to avoid a scenario like that is to upgrade when possible. You also get access to the PSN store if you migrate to 5.00..so, yeah go for it, dead simple process.

PSN support is pretty cool... I dunno, man, I think it'd be worth the trouble. Also, going from a custom firmware to another custom firmware shouldn't be too difficult.

Chance of possible PSP 3000 Homebrew enabler coming before Tuesday.
HEN will be a stripped down enabler lacking many features of M33 custom firmware. It'll allow the bootup of homebrew regardless but may be restrictive to certain applications (in cases where it will not boot at all). However, applications will be released to enhance the HEN such as the loading of M33 custom firmware when I get permission to use the modules.

As another note, the conditions of the TIFF exploit as very unstable (as you might have noticed) and flashing of modules to flash0 is improbable and will load off the memorystick. An eboot will be supplied to countervent this and will flash the modules in a more stable enviroment.

Release is currently unconfirmed but will be before Tuesday.

So, a way to install CFW to a 3000 may come before Tuesday, but it will be really unstable and only run certain apps?

Pass.

:lol

Suppose you expect them to have it all up and working 100%? It also won't be unstable, apparently they are correcting that, so don't put in a bad light like that.

It's a start, it's better than nothing, and if true, it's pretty awesome.

I'm all nostalgic over this being made possible by a TIFF exploit because I remember downgrading my first PSP from 2.00 to 1.50 using something similar in 2005. Quite funny that they're still finding these exploits after so many firmware updates.

Nah, I understand baby steps and all. I was just being a smartass. Any word on what apps will and won't run?

Not quite. If it works like past similar exploits, it might take a few attempts before you succeed in properly executing the exploit, but once it is executed, a stable EBOOT is launched that handles the downgrade/CFW installer. Exploit execution failure will probably result in a lock of some sort, but not any kind of serious damage.

Once the EBOOT is running, it should be perfectly stable.

Quick (stupid) question since it's been a while...

I recently got my PSP-2000 analog stick repaired, so I'm back to PSP gaming. I have a semi-recent version of the M33 firmware on it (4-point-something), and I believe that it had the ability to update the firmware via Network Update. I know that the most recent firmware is 5.00 M33-6, and I'd like to upgrade, but when I do Network Update, it looks suspiciously like the official Sony update process.

So is this just a usability flaw in that it looks scary, but the network update will get me to 5.00 M33-6 just fine? Or should I use a recent Memory Stick-based firmware updater with a Pandora battery to get to the latest version?

that's how it is
you can also manually do the update

Use the updater on the PSP, check in the CFW setting (hold R when you boot up the PSP) just to make sure that it's enabled). The M33 team hijacked Sony's updater, it's looks official, but it routes to CFW instead and will install the latest version for you, not the official firmware.

If you're not 100% confident that M33 Network Update is enabled, and you're too lazy to check, you can initiate the network update download, then cancel out of it when it prompts you to execute it. Then navigate to the Game / Memory Stick menu on the XMB, and scope out the installer. It'll be dead obvious if it's the M33 installer or not.

Just bought a PSP 1003; is it a certainty that I'll be able to install custom firmware on it? It's a preowned system, so I don't know what firmware is on it at the minute.

"Davee" has promised that a kernel-level exploit for PSP 3000s is imminent, but beyond that, no real news.

It's a certainty. At the absolute least convenient worst-case scenario (OFW is beyond 3.50, IIRC), you won't be able to rely on a purely software solution and will need to create or procure a Pandora battery. In the best case scenario, you'll be able to use a software exploit to flash CFW on it.

Hey got a little problem.
Updated to the latest m33 firmware (was on 5 m33 already) and for some reason i cant get my iso's to work now!

Just wondered if there was some specific folder and settings i need them in as TBH i cant remember the last time i played an iso on it so my memory is a bit fuzzy :(

Thanks for any help.

They go in x:\ISO (where x is your drive letter)

Make sure you have the right driver enabled. At the XMB hit "Select" and then check if the "UMD ISO MODE" is set to "M33 driver". Hope that helps.

Thanks. It'll be here tomorrow hopefully so I'll know who to hassle if I'm too dumb to get it working ;)

Thanks a lot, i didnt have the driver set up to M33 so that was the problem. I dont think i have used an iso since 5 so i have never changed that setting.

Got my PSP; the installed firmware is 2.81, "c1003" is written inside behind the UMD drive. I don't have my memory stick or games yet, so I've basically got a large paperweight, but do I need to buy any games to aid me in installing CFW? I thought I needed GTA or Lumines or something along those lines.

Yeah you have it right. Because your PSP FW version is so low, you can hack your PSP using either Lumines or first edition GTA:LCS (FW 2.00 on UMD).

If they are going to be hard to find, you can mod it with Pandora battery setup which can be bought for less than €10 online from DealExtreme or eBay.

Sorry to bump this; I got a memory stick today (but can't make a Pandora Battery yet), now I'm itching to look around the PSN store on my PSP. If I update to the latest firmware (so that I can access this stuff) will this mess up my ability to later install CFW? I want something to play on my system :(
