PSP Custom Firmware Thread

I have a PSP2000 that has had its battery modified to take custom firmware with the magic mem stick etc.

What are the benefits of running the custom firmware though?

Two most important:

100% illegal - run pirated games

Somewhat illegal/legal (depending where you live and law applicable) - you can dump your UMD to mem stick, GREATLY speeds up load times in games.

You forgot :
- homebrew, as there are some very nice homebrew apps and plugins for the PSP
- dumping your old PS1 games
- some random stuff like unlocking the CPU

Like what? :D

Speaking of plugins, what's the best screenshot plugin? I'm currently using Best ScreenShot but sometimes it freezes up my PS1 games, so that I actually have to remove the battery to be able to restart the PSP. Is this just something that's going to happen no matter what plugin I use?

Also, I'm trying to get random wallpapers to work with this thing but it's not working. I'm following the readme, so I'm not sure why!

I use the plugin in this bundle. It's pretty basic but I've been using it extensively since 3.71 and it's never failed me.

A little while back I was trying to create a Pandora battery and memory stick using a friend's PSP, but it wasn't capable of creating the battery.

I finally got another PSP that could do the job, and was able to get my PSP up and running on 5.00 M33-6 thanks to the awesome guides in the OP.

Thanks a bunch to navanman and Mejilan for all their great work. Keep it up!

Awesome. It's always fun reading about success stories.
It's really not nearly has difficult or daunting as the larger tutorials would have you believe. :)

I just bought a PSP (PSP2004 with 3.95, so I heard it's crackable) and I want to install CFW.
Will I lose any feature, like being able to try demos or buy downloadable games? Also, can I revert back to official firmware is such a feature appears in the future?

You don't lose any features going from OFW > CFW. It's ALL an upgrade! PSN Store and everything still works fine. There isn't a single reason why you would want OFW if you have the ability to use CFW.

My favorite app is: RemoteJoy Lite. You can USB up to your PC and play your PSP on your PC screen. Which is great for taking screen shots and videos, and better, you can plug in a USB controller and use a controller for your games. Recently, I've been using a dual analog setup for games like Phantasy Star Portable and it's really nice!

Thanks! I hope I don't have one of those new motherboards though. Homebrew/emulators were the main reasons why I chose a PSP instead of a DS.

Three questions:

How far along is the progress for CFW for PSP3000?
Will Sony ever bring the Go!Cam to USA?
Ad Hoc Party Mode(JPN) seems super confusing can anyone explain it easily?

It's pretty simple - it lets you play Ad-hoc-only multiplayer games over the internet by using the PS3 as a gateway/tunnel. It's quite ingenious, and a huge pity that it hasn't been offered anywhere else yet.

Hello gents, just wanted an opinion as to what the best MegaDrive/Genesis emulator would be for PSP. I've been out of the emulation scene for a bit with PSP so I'd appreciate some advice about the best/latest emulator (and a link if possible).

I was trying to make a ps1 .iso earlier and I came across an error. It says I don't have Cygwin1.dll, I just wanted to make sure it's a legal file to download before I go searching for it.

It's basically GNU for Windows, which means it's covered under GNU GPL (ie open source), which means yes, it's perfectly lego. The second result when you do a Google search for "Cygwin1.dll" is the Cygwin website, which would've told you this as well.

Could you be a bit more specific about what you're using to boot up the PSP, or at least, what was used to create the Pandora?

You're edit doesn't tell me anything.
I meant, what software was used to set up the Pandora?
What software is on the magic memory stick?
Not all Pandoras are created equally.

What the battery configured with some kind of multi-boot IPL?
Sounds like it might have. Typically, they'll allow you to boot into the Pandora memory by holding L during bootup, otherwise they'll boot regularly to the XMB. Or vice-versa.

Another option would be to use the same Pandora tools to configure the battery as a Pandora to revoke it's Service Mode status, reverting it to a regular battery.

Wait, you used BOTH guides? Both UMPT/UPT and Catb50?
They're kind of mutually exclusive.
Maybe there's some conflict there between the two...

In any event, what exactly is the issue?
You continue using the Pandora battery on the newly cracked PSP, and it sometimes boots to the Pandora menu, sometimes to the XMB?

The solution is simple. The PSP is cracked, so you don't really need the Pandora anymore. Restore the Pandora battery to it's original, non-Pandora state.
UPMT/UPT should be able to do that for you in seconds. I've never used the Catb50 installer, so I can't really say how it's done there, but I imagine it too has a method for restoring batteries.

You could have used just the UPMT/UPT tutorial (#1 in your post), without diddling with the Catb50 tutorial.

This has probably been asked and answered so sorry but I can't find the answer so I'll ask again. I have an orignial phat with 5.00 M33 and I would like to create a pandora battery/memorystick, can I do so with this firmware, or do I have to role back to an older firmware? Thanks for your help and sorry if this has already been asked/answered.

Yes, a PSP-1000 with CFW installed can very easily create a Pandora battery, assuming the target battery is not Pandora-proof.
Hit up the link in the OP to the UPMT/UPT tutorial by navanman. The UPMT/UPT installer is my favorite Pandora creation app.

Edit - At least, I'm fairly sure UPT 5.0.2 is 5.00 M33-compatible... Yes, Google confirms that UPT 5.0.2 loads just fine on 5.00 M33. Have fun!

Anyone know of a source for the old 2200 mAh batteries? Any suggestions on where I could look (in a store) to find them?

Basically I want the original Sony 2200 mAh battery that is Pandorizable.

I haven't updated my FW since 3.72 MWW-4(or whatever), but I've forgotten how to do it, do I still need to DL 1.50 FW and then change the EBOOT name to 500 and the other to 150?

Hey I have a PSP-1000 with 3.40 OE-A. What is the most recent firmware I can use that doesn't require a Pandora Battery? I don't have much knowledge of recent developments in the firmware community so I don't know much about all this talk of Pandora this and Pandora that. Is it required for the newest firmware updates or is it just to unbrick PSP's?

All the Pandora battery does is enable you to install a CF onto a PSP that is running the original firmware and unbrick PSPs.

If you're already running a CF, you don't need to use it (although it can be used as a quicker way to update to a newer version).

The latest version, I belive, is 5.00 M33. Upgrading from 3.40 OE-A, you're going to have to go through some steps. If you can get it to 3.80, you should be able to use the network update feature to update to 5.00 M33.

Probably not the best place to ask, but does anyone have any experience buying replacement PSP screens? Where would be the best place to buy them from?

Anyone know the best place to find the original Japan only release, pearl white PSP? I don't need it to have CFW on it, but wouldn't mind if it did. I've always wanted one but couldn't justify the purchases of a second PSP just for the color. I assume now the prices have fallen enough for me to snag one.

It might be just me, but I don't think that's a question you should be asking...
