PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Question....does the Custom Firmware allow you to have save states on PSP games? If so, how do they work? Are they like in emulators, where you can have multiple save slots, pick one, and then quick save/quick load at anytime you want? Or is more like how it behaves on the PSPGo?
Yeah it do have Save States plug-in just like common emulator's real-time save feature where you can save and load anytime/where in the PSP games.

When you are playing PSP games, press home button. You can save multiple slots by different button combos.
Example I think R1 button is Save and L1 is for Load, maybe other way.

R1 + Square = save slot 1 / L1 + Square = load slot 1
R1 + Circle = save slot 2 / L1 + Circle = load slot 2
R1 + Right D-pad = save slot 3 / L1 + Right D-pad = load slot 3
and go on....

Is the 'Enable Flash' option missing from the 'System Settings' menu on anyone else's PSP? You can turn it on in the recovery menu, but it might be a bug all the same.

I'm running the latest release of M33/Dark Alexs firmware.

What's the easiest / safest way to upgrade to this new 5.5 GEN?

Important - Get the 5.50 OFW Eboot - I messed this up and had to pandora my PSP. :lol

There is a direct path to GEN-B2, but foolproof way to do it would be to go from GEN-A to GEN-B to GEN-B2 to GEN-D to GEN-D2.

You can save state PSP games? Is that a plugin that's already included, or is it one you have to find and download?

Also, to upgrade to GEN-D, just drag the file in the memory card and boot it up on the XMB?

I picked up a used 2000 today. It's at version 3.71. I'll probably find instructions for the tiff exploit and install custom firmware tonight. I don't want to make a Pandora right now because I don't have a cover to hold the 1000's larger battery in.

It's a plugin Dark Alex made, but it only works on Slim models.

Quick question: I'm still on an old CFW and thinking about upgrading. Has there been any issues with emulators running on this new fancy firmware (DGEN, SNES9x, NesterJ, etc)?

I've got my new Slim up to 4.03M33. I'm going to start on the process of getting it to 5.50-GEN D now. Have there any new updates to Popsloader? I haven't been keeping up with releases for it. I have all the files that were needed when 5.00 M33 was still new.

Finally up to Gen D-2. I've updated Game Categories and installed the newest Popsloader files. Do I need to decrypt any of the firmwares or is the Gen-A Popsloader all I need? I have all the files for Pops up to 4.01.

how are your guys old patched games from b-2 working on D or D2?... I've gone back to my un-decrypted backups for the ones i kept the original for, for the most part after going to D, but some of the ones i have are patched ISO's that i decrypted/patched, and i don't want to go back and re-do them all if i don't have to. Some of my backups on D (motorstorm and SC) don't all seem to get along and i get a lot of freezing on some of them after updating.

I found that changing the UMD driver helps, but that gets a little old, having to switch b/t M-33 or NP 9660 every time i play a game.. Just wondering if its only me.. I guess i'll just have to re-do all my backups?

No need. I did my own upgrade from B2 to D last week, and I also have one decrypted ISO (GT). It works fine in D. So I'd suggest just running your patched ISOs in D when you get it, and seeing what sticks.

EDIT: Oh, and don't forget to disable GAME plugins in the recovery menu if you have any trouble.

That is fucking AWESOME!!!!!!!! I didn't know you could do this! The fact that the custom firmware allows you to do this on PSP games using a PSP 3000 or under, while the PSP Go does not, is a HUUUGE incentive to stick with standard PSP! FUCK the Go!

Thanks.

What does the CPU speed function do? Does it speed up the loading in games?

It might, but what you'll mainly notice is that on certain games, the frame rates will be smoother. It helps a LOT of games like Tomb Raider Legend and Outrun 2006, for example. Also in Tekken 5 DR, it makes the replays go at 60fps instead of 30fps. (Or it appears that way, at least)

Almost every single significant feature added to the PSP by Sony, either via firmware update or hardware revision, has been a response to the custom firmware scene.

By and large, we've had said features available first. Our solutions are not necessarily as elegant at times, but that's hardly a barrier.

I got a PSP 1000 model with current OFW, what can I do? (I've noticed that piracy has already won and the PSP's future [PSP Go] is set in stone, might as well live it up now)

Interesting developments.
Bubbletune has released v8 of his magnificent Game Categories plugin.

Additionally, that first SNES emu branch I posted about a week or two (not the Euphoria one) has seen an update, so we basically have two new SNES emu branches in active development.

Happy days!

- Fixed UTF8 support
- Improved Mode Context Menu - now shows a greater number of entries
- Added the ability to hide files not fully cataloged (see readme)
- Fixed a bug that caused some crashes

Yeah good to see they're still updating. I wasn't happy with Euphoria - esp the menu is too long to load.

I have you tried Euphoria rev2.1?
I'm watching that one in particular, because he has very ambitious plans for the emulator (for a change), and just might have the talent to realize them.

Also, I didn't notice any particular lagginess in accessing the menus when compared to other revs of this SNES emu?

BTW, amazing job on touching up that Epic Mickey concept art. I use it was my wallpaper here at home and at work, and I NEVER use video game assets as wallpapers.

Hmm, I have 2.1 download but extracted came with 2.0 folder. I will check another download source if it is different.
What I mean that it has "Please wait" loading when you want go to menus. It never has one in the other version.

Oh yeah, I'm using this wallpaper at home and my work laptop too. Glad you enjoy it.

[Edit] Hmm, it seem I'm not only one and it could be going to fix R3 according to retroemu.com (But good thing they're redo the menu GUI. I hope it will be much better/faster.)

Yeah, really looking forward to Zack's future edits. Beyond a whole slew of new performance improvements and optimizations, I know he plans on upgrading the SNES9x core to 1.51. It's about damn time someone finally starts taking SNES emulation on the PSP seriously, IMHO.

I guess this is the best place to ask about this.

So, anyway, i recently bought a PSP from the buy/sell/trade thread. It's obviously used, so i don't expect a brand new working PSP - even tho that's kinda what i got, saving some scuff marks.

Anyway, that's not the problem. The first week, it worked normally, but I noticed that, on the second week, after a long period of playthrough (like 1:30 hours), a whiter strip would run down the LCD screen, as shown here:

whiter_stripe.jpg

It used to go away after a couple minutes with the PSP turned off (which made me believe the LCD screen was heating up or something), but now it doesn't go away.

As you can see, it doesn't really hinder gameplay. Like i said, it's just a whiter strip of pixels. I just through I should ask. To see if anybody has ever seen anything like it before.

Ouch. it is exactly same problem with my old laptop a while ago. Bad news is only way to fix is replacement the LCD screen, but you can find reasonable cheap from HK by eBay.

But there might be fixable if it is not permanent one. Try get all white on the screen for few hours (without switch screen off)

Looks like LCD Screen retention to me.

I don't think d2 fixed the access to psn store through psp. You have to use the sony app mediago or something to access psn store.

YYeah, i know replacing the LCD will fix it. I'm just too lazy to fix it now. :D

BTW, replacement LCD screens are not that cheap anyway - not for the 2000 series. Everywhere i find them they're up to 50 usd.

I'll exchange them eventually. Thanks.

I'm with you on this one. I had half given up on SNES emulation before this came out. Not because I thought that it couldn't be done, but because no one seemed to care. There's absolutely no reason to why there couldn't be a more than decent SNES emulator for the PSP. Believe.

Ha ha! I figure this as good a place as any to rave about how I finally tracked down a goddam Extended Life Battery Kit. And not one of the nine billion knock-offs that the internets are littered with, a motherfucking genuine one. I killed my old Phattie's battery somehow, and for months I've been searching for anything that'd give me longer than an hour of playtime, but it was absofuckinglutely impossible to find the real fucking thing.

So, I'm looking at VideoGamesPlus for something completely unrelated, and I decide to check their PSP section for a laugh. And there the bitch is! I put the sucker in my cart and actually toyed with the idea of buying two, but when I increased the quantity in my cart it told me there wasn't enough stock; I found the last one :lol

At last my PSP can be considered an actual gaming device again. For the record, I know they're still easily findable for folks in the US, but I'm in Australia and I'd been tearing my hair out.

I regret asking a dumb question, but could I run that 3000 cfw that's about to come out on a new unit bought past this point, out of the box?

This is an out of the blue sort of question, but I am new to this hole CFW business since I've always bought UMDs, but I went CFW for one reason-

Policenauts.

I downloaded it, and am using CFW Gen-D, am I doing something wrong GAF? It says this software cannot be played or some shit :(

I forget which one, but you need to set Popsloader to a specific version.

Did you convert it to an Eboot or are you trying to just run an ISO of it? You say you're new to custom firmware, so just want to get the obvious option out of the way first.

Christ I always feel like keeping up with this stuff is a clusterfuck on the PSP. So I'm on 5.00 M33-6, and understand that I will want to go to 5.50 GEN-D. I have downloaded 5.50 GEN-D but unfortunately the readme there is almost entirely jibberish.

Can someone point me to a post or a site or anything that might explain my next step?

I believe the psp 3000 you buy will have to have OFW 5.03 or else you won't be able to do the exploit to get CFW running.
