PSP Custom Firmware Thread

hikarutilmitt said:
What firmware were they signed for when you bought them?

I was using a 6.31-pro psp go.

would downgrading to 6.20 require different keys?

Seems like a quick delete/re-transfer from PS3 should fix it, right?

The OP is a bit outdated, so I'm wondering:

Should I upgrade my PSP-2000 to 6.35 (or is it 6.36...) or stick with 6.3 ?

I want to install a custom firmware, I'm tired of hearing that UMD scratching sound, but I have no idea if the firmwares currently out are only for 6.35.

Finally, anyone has a link to a guide / tutorial explaining what to do to install a CFW on my 2000?

Thanks

Edit:

Answering my own question : here

Thanks Scissors :)

been thinking of picking up a PSP-GO to suit my limited portable gaming needs, if I can find one on the cheap. HOmebrew has my eye as well, but just wondering how easy/manageable it is for someone like me w/o a lot of experience in this sort of stuff.

My main question is, with the Go, can you still buy/download games off PSN while still running homebrew? Or does cracking it pretty much mean no PSN?

Also I assume all this stuff is done via memory stick, but my only computer is a Mac, is that a problem?

After downgrading to 6.20, is there a workaround so I can log back into the PSN store?

Or is it feasible to just download content on the ps3 and transfer it over?

Also, I'm not too big on the plug-ins and whatnot...all I really care to do is backup my UMD games and use emulators. Can I upgrade to the newest OFW and use HEN and still be able to do this?

It should, but I can't guarantee that the ones on PSN weren't re-keyed to 6.37 already (if you download them again). In which case you would be able to download them fine and transfer them, but you may run into the exact same issues again.

I mean, it would seem ridiculous that they'd re-key all of the PSN content every time, but at the same time it may not be difficult to resign all of the available PSP content from PSN.

Is it possible that downgrading your firmware would mess up your screen?

Yesterday I downgraded to 6.20 from 6.35 so I could use HEN 6.2 C. Then while playing my backed up copy of BBS, I noticed this almost grey box taking up most of the screen.

It's like there is a box and inside the box it is a tad darker, and outside the box it's a bit lighter, with outside the box maybe being | | that much of the screen (from the edge of the psp screen to the inside, where the box starts.

I've never noticed this before. Anyway to fix it?

Do you have a 3000? This is unfortunately normal (or at least common). You might just never have noticed it before (it's most noticeable on the grey screen you use to quit a program)

I do have a 3000. So this is normal? Nothing I did that caused it?

Yes mine has the weird shadow around the screen to. But downgrading can cause worse (brick) or flash problems which some got, like mine I think not sure.

Not sure about connecting to PSN on the PSP Go itself because I transfer my PSN bought games through the PC software (mediago or something) or my PS3. Still, I don't believe it is a problem.

As for how easy it is, it's almost effortless. You plug in your PSP Go (you don't need a memory stick since it has built in 16 gig storage) and drag and drop the files you want. If you've used a flash drive before, it is about that difficult.

Someone else can confirm but I don't think it will be a problem for a mac. I think it is read as a universal drive when it's plugged in.

Sounds easy enough. But If I buy PSP/PSone classics off PSN and use my PS3 to transfer them to the Go, will that cause any problems? Will it make you upgrade and bork the firmware? I guess I'm just wondering if it has to be one or the other: Use your PSP for custom firmware/emulators or use it for legit PSN downloads.

I didn't have any trouble doing it. When I got my PSP Go it was 5.7-something firmware and I was able to transfer Syphon Filter PS1 and some PSP games onto it and play them. I went up to 6.20, did all the homebrew stuff, and still no problem. This is all while the current firmware was above 6.35. (I'm still at firmware 6.20 because posts seem to suggest it had the most option)

The issue there might be is if you get a PSN game that requires higher than the current. I don't know if there is a way to bypass the firmware checker since I haven't run into that problem yet. Someone else should be better able to answer that question.

Yes. No. Respectively. Some titles may require a higher firmware or PSNfucker/lover to get around the DRM/stripping DRM but I haven't ran into any issues with my PSN bought games on my PSP-1000 with GEN.

Also I assume all this stuff is done via memory stick, but my only computer is a Mac, is that a problem?

No. Doesn't matter as the memorystick is /psp/.../... and doesn't need any outside programs. Just load the stuff to where it says it wants to go and you're fine.

Honestly, the issue to worry about is some PSN titles like Dino Crisis not running on 5.55-GEN/whatever the temp CFW is as it requires a higher firmware to run glitch/non-emulation issue free that Sony's PSN release wants. You can probably still play those games converting them into a custom eboot, but I wouldn't recommend it (Sup, FF8?).

Can 6.35 pro A2 go into sleep mode in PSN PS1 games? In the HEN I have it fails to resume from sleep (asks to quit the game) but I can just play them with the HEN off. I'm worried if I go from HEN to 6.35 CFW that I won't be able to play my PS1 games.

So I'm running 5.50 GEN D with Prometheus 3. Noticed that there were some new CFW since I last updated. Should I update?

If you can still run all games, i'd say no. That's a proper CFW too with 100% support for everything, whereas this HEN is just a temporary one with less support.

I tried 5.50 GEN-D after creating a soft-modded Pandora battery and MMS, but I went back to OFW 6.35. I just remembered why I never wanted CFW: I can't use my games without searching for a patch or something.
I might use CFW when I have no more PSP games to play and only want to use emulators or something.

I'm running 6.35 pro A2 on my 2000. Just put FF7 into sleep mode and it came right back after I took it off. No problems here.

Help please!

After installing the 6.35 PRO-A my PSP 3000 won't read UMDs anymore...
Code:
The game could not be started.
(800201148)

Everything was working fine on 6.35 PRO so I'd like to downgrade back to that, if possible...

Try loading the UMD without HEN running. I had that issue when running 6.20 with HEN going, too.

Installed 635 HEN but i cant get the "6.35/6.31 -> 6.20 Downgrader By Davee" to work.

I copied the "6.35 downgrader" file into PSP>GAME instead of copying the entire "PSP" folder (this thread recommends) over the one i have on the system. I'l loose my saves and shit if i do that right?

I have 6.35 running and at first it gave me some kind of DM5 error mismatch thing. Now my PSP just does a clicking sound and shuts down :(

Help

That was the first thing I tried. It doesn't matter is HEN is on or off, no UMDs will play. :( Is there a simple way to take HEN off? Is it as easy as deleting files off the PSP so that I may reinstall 6.35 PRO? If so, are there any files I shouldn't touch?

Yeah, just remove all of the HEN files form your memory stick.

Actually, try shutting down your PSP, removing the memory stick and starting it up cold without one. If the UMD still doesn't run...

This is happening. Powered off (holding for 3 seconds, etc), removed the duo stick, then powered back on. The system reads the game in the menu like before, but upon pressing 'X', the PSP logo appears (like normal), everything goes to black, and then after a while of nothing it'll kick me back to the main menu.

If you're willing to go through with a downgrade to 6.20 or even 5.03 (since you're on a 3000, if your model will work) I would try it. So long as you follow the instructions to the letter you should be fine.

I've been out of the loop for a long time. Just dusted off my PSP-1000 to see it is running 5.50 Gen-D (Full). How behind am I with custom firmwares and such? I'm ready to jump back in.

Just got a PSP Go with HEN installed. Such a good device when its actually useful, looking forward to pops support on it.

Charging is still a bitch though, unlike most USB charging devices it will not auto charge (as in from mains) with third party battery stuff.

Damn, this thread has made me tempted to get a PSP GO D: I love the form factor, I'm just worried about missing out on UMD releases.

I was also hoping to give up PSP firmware hassle forever, as so frequently I can't play stuff on my PSP 1000 because it's cracked. I should really strip that down entirely.

I do hate messing with hardware to get games to work, though. It's a large part of why I play console games.

I have read several reports about people having such issues with 6.35 PRO and all of its subsequent updates. I think the best thing you can do right now is:

1) update to 6.35 PRO-A3, the latest corresponding version of this LCFW that was released today, and see if the issues disappear
2) if your problems still persist, run the 6.35 PRO-A3 updater program and choose the option to completely remove all the prx files that were written onto your flash

Removing the .prx files (through the updater) that were originally written on flash0 will almost certainly solve your problems related to UMD playback. Be careful, though: any operation that touches flash0 is a very risky process, especially on a PSP-3000, which if done incorrectly might produce a brick and render your system irreparably unusable.

That's... completely ridiculous. there's no reason you shouldn't have been able to just load up whatever OFW you needed and let it go. What sort of error did it give you when you tried?
it's not, old Dark Alex CFW's blocked OFW upgrades

You should be fine. Most of the new custom firmware stuff in the PSP scene is for PSPs that were previously unhackable AKA PSP-3000, Go, etc. Just don't bother with any of it and stay where you're at, trust me.

I'm pretty much in the same boat, will it be safe for me to go buy Tactics Ogre this week or am I going to have to spend hours getting up to date? The last game I bought was P3P but with The Show and Ogre coming out I need to get updated quick.

Isn't there a way to make any game playable on any firmware using Iso Tool? That's what I was told, anyway. You can decrypt the game and patch it for whatever firmware you're on.

F-ing KH: BBS has really pissed me off. I think my UMD drive is dying or acting up so I'm back in the modding scene. I've got OFW 6.31 and I'm running 631HEN. Using ISO Tool 1.966 to rip the KH:BBS ISO. Then patch prometheus and make xmb-icon? The game seems to be crashing randomly.

It seems Tactics Ogre is already out on the net and there is already a patch for the firmwares 5.00 m33-6, 5.50 GEN and 5.03 GEN.

Have a link? Looks like Dark Alex's website is down for the moment.

Any way I can get Tactics Ogre running on 5.00 m33-6? It keeps crashing on the second battle and I'm debating on going back to official firmware just to play it.

EDIT: I tried a 6.30 plugin and also the 5.00 Prometheus and neither of them will work.

Is there anyway to turn a game downloaded from PSN into an iso file? Tactics Ogre's file size is over a gig, but apparently if you delete the install data file from it it shrinks down to around 700 MB.

Also, you need a patch to run Tactics Ogre on certain CFWs.

I'd also be interested in this. My copy arrived from Amazon today and I'm getting the black screen at the Gates and Data install from both running the UMD and from the memory stick.

Some people have said there's a patch, but is there a link to this?

I'm running a PSP-1000 5.50 Prometheus. This is probably as close as to updating to the official firmware as I've ever been.

A few minutes of googling and I found this: patch?
It's worth a try if you can't get it to work on your custom firmware. Doesnt help me though as I have a digital copy...can anyone help?

PSN fucker plus the patch won't work?

Strip the DRM out if you can. If you can't do that, I dunno. :/

Just connect the PSP with the 2GB stick in to a PC, USB On, transfer temporarily to computer desktop, USB Off, insert 16GB, turn on USB mode again, transfer.

Tried to find it myself, but only a patch for the EU version (which doesn't match up with the dump from my UMD). Downloading the EU version now that's patched so I can at least play the game I bought.
