PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.

I haven't tried it but doesn't CFW extender support this when you install USBHostFS.

Never even heard of that. I just downloaded the 3.71 edition and will try it out.

Just updated to 3.90 M33-2 via Network Update. Very smooth. Took less than 10 seconds.

Not sure what benefits it will bring to someone like me who doesn't use plug-ins and Sony branded sticks, but I like having the latest firmware installed.

Note: only 3.90 M33-2 and higher can be booted from nand in slim with those ipl loaders, not official Sony firmwares or previous versions of M33.
Hmm...I'm curious to know what this means exactly. I updated to 3.90 M33-2 on my slim and downgraded to official 3.80 and 3.80 M33 with my Pandora battery with no problems, but I don't want to leave it on M33-2 if it's going to potentially cause problems like those early downgraders did with keys on TA-082 motherboards.

Or does it mean that if you use those IPL loaders in the future you won't be able to use previous M33 versions or official firmware unless you revert to the normal one? I is confused.

sounds like it means that older firmwares do not work with the Booster and TimeMachine IPL loaders. they should still work normally.

wow. so cool to get this with the network update. Took literally 45 seconds to download and install. It's also nice to have the option to install it later.

The Boosters IPL fix is in relation to the UPMS program and the way you can use it as regular battery/MS or Pandora depending if you hold down L-Trigger.

This IPL didn't work on Slim as it was based on 1.50 kernel which Slim didn't support.

Available on D-A's site is a brand new patch to bring the 3.71 memory stick driver into 3.90M33, enjoy.

Dark Alex said:
Patch to load 3.71 fatmsmod in 3.80/3.90 M33
The purpose of this patch is to load the fat memory stick driver of 3.71 in 3.80/3.90 to make memory stick reading work better.

Instructions:

- Using psardumper get fatmsmod.prx from 3.71. It doesn't matter if it is decrypted, encrypted, etc
It is probably better idea that is encrypted because it is also compressed and use less flash space.

Copy it from /F0/kd/fatmsmod.prx to the root.

- Copy the FATMSPATCH to /PSP/GAME and run it. If the patch is successfull, you'll have 3.71 fatmsmod running in 3.80/3.90
This process flashes the fatmsmod.prx as flash0:/kd/fatms371.prx, it adds a custom file needed to compatibilize the module with 3.80/3.90 (fatms371_friend.prx),
and changes the pspbt* files.

Note: fatmsmod of 3.71 usually works better because it has a better cache system, and usually reads on bigger blocks.
(in some things is worse than 3.89/3.90 like sometimes reading more data than needed - lazy prediction -).

However it uses more kernel memory, and it is unknown if it will have any kind of secondary effect running this module in 3.80/3.90

The lags in np9660 no umd mode won't probably be solved, as that is a different problem.

WOW!! No reason not to upgrade to 3.90 M33 firmware. That was the last hurdle for some people, me included!!

Yeah I wouldn't do it if I was you, there's much faster loading with the patch, but a load of people over at Max Console are reporting that the media sections in the XMB are showing up with no files after this. I can confirm this to be the case, and without a Pandora battery, I am suitably annoyed, but I don't really use my PSP for video and audio at the moment anyways.

Just updated to 3.90 M33-2 and I am experiencing vast improvements with my 4 and 8 GB Sony Memory Sticks over 3.90. Awesome job DA.

Edit: Never mind, I had the clock speed at 333mhz.

Off topic. I have a 4GB Sony branded Duo. Thinking of getting a 8GB card, but the M2 version costs much less than a 8GB Duo. And the M2 is more future proof as I can always downgrade the card to a Sony Ericsson mobile phone when the 16GB Duos become affordable.

Is there are significant performance difference between a M2 card (with Duo adaptor) and a native Duo card? Especially with 3.80/3.90 M33.

Looks like DA fixed the no media problem of his first release of the fatmspatch with a new second version, which I have tried myself and can confirm it now works as it should:

Hey, so I finally decided to upgrade my firmware from 3.52 since I bought Wipeout Pulse today and it wouldn't boot on 3.52.

I upgraded to 3.71 release #1 and now Wipeout plays (which is a surprise considering the disc comes with 3.73 so I thought 3.73 or higher would be required).

What firmware should I upgrade to from this point? I don't care about ps1 games or apps or anything. I just want to play games I own off UMD and ripped onto mem card if their load times suck.

Stay at 3.71 update 4. Alternatively, upgrade to 3.90 update 2 and apply a dirty hack to obtain slightly worse results and a internet radio player/skype.

Okay, so for the whole fatmsmod.prx thing- I have no idea how to go about extracting the needed file. Could someone give me a hand on this?

Actually, I don't got it. Silly me, I changed the USB device to F0, copied the file from there to the F0 root, and tried to apply the update, only now, I'm running on 3.90 M33, so I'm SOL. Anyone willing to run PSARDumper on their 3.71 firmware version and get the file for me (NO SIG CHECK)? :D

Probably that the new NP9660 driver is handled by a different module (not fatmsmod). Even so, I gave it a try and it has improved to almost the old levels of performance. M33 is still better as of now though; loads are slightly slower, but there are no sound/image hitches.

He's going to get around to fixing it... I hope.

Been pretty sick, but it looks like DA's well on his way to fixing everything that got broken with the 3.80 and 3.90 firmwares. If he can get the Sony ISO Loader working as good as it did pre-3.80, I'll finally upgrade.

I'm looking for a CFW PSP Slim owner please to test UPMS V3 for my new tutorial.
If you would like to test it, please PM me and I'll send you the install instructions.

I need some information on what screen appears when you boot UPMS on Slim PSP.

On the old UPMS, it was only DC V3 that appeared but in UPMS V3 you have the option to install DC V3 for 3.71 M33-2 or DC V4 for 3.80 M33-5.

Thanks.

Is there any other way to transfer the PSP feed to the PC without the Remotejoy?

I used it to play on my TV (PSP -> PC -> TV) but for some reason I can't get it to work on 3.90 firmware.

Any ideas?

So, I got a PSP a month ago and since I know no one with a fat, ordered the Datel TOOL. Problem is, the damn thing keeps getting it's ship date pushed back and I am chomping at the bit to test this CFW out.

Is it possible to do this without a modded fat or a Tool?

I apologize in advance, as I am sure this has been asked somewhere in this incredibly dense thread.

Basically No. If your PSP is a new Slim you need the Datel TOOL or sombodies Pandora Battery.

Edit: Still looking for volunteer with CFW Slim PSP

Dark Alex has finally released Time Machine 0.1, check out his site to download. I would post the readme, but it's quite long and it looks like a slightly risky and difficult install not for the faint-hearted, or most of the people that just run into this thread like Flash Gordon. I would try it myself, but I don't really need it as I have a fat PSP. Perhaps our GAF CFW luminaries can give it a whirl?

How to downgrade, install CFW on ANY PSP using Universal Pandora Memory Stick (UPMS):

Intro:
Okay folks, this is an updated UPMS tutorial for those of you on 3.80 M33 and greater. I've decided to write this tutorial as the question how do I install CFW on my new PSP Slim is appearing more and more on these forums. The old downgraders that we used to use on the old phat PSP don't work with the new Slim or any phat PSP with firmware greater than 3.50. As you may know or have heard Dark_Alex and Team C+D came with the Pandora Battery and in this tutorial we are going to make a Pandora Battery setup developed by BRONZ3gh0st and OverfiendX called UPMS. So lets begin,

What you'll need:
- Any PSP with CFW installed, it doesn't matter if its a phat or slim PSP.
- Memory Stick Pro Duo ranging in size from 256MB (minimum) to 4GB (maximum), even a fake eBay MS.
- If on 3.80 M33+, please have no custom theme installed/prx's installed in flash0 as 400K of free space is required to install IPL patch. When UPMS is finished running, this flash0 mod will be deleted.

Fake MS Steps:
1. Download the UPMS V3 from UPMS webpage at UPMS Project Website.
2. Extract the CSO file from the rar package and place in the ISO folder of your PSPs Memory Stick (MS).
3. Then run the CSO called "UPMS Installer" from your PSP by browsing to GAME / Memory Stick in XMB.
4. Run the "Format Fake Memory Stick program in the UPMS Main Menu".
5. Remove and Insert your fake Memory Stick, then press X to create folders and exit UPMS program.

What to do: PSP CFW > 3.80 M33
1. Download the UPMS V3 from UPMS webpage at UPMS Project Website
2. Extract the CSO file from the rar package and place in the ISO folder of your PSPs Memory Stick (MS)
3. We then need to download the Sony 1.5FW and Sony 3.71FW and Sony 3.80FW and rename them to 150.PBP and 371.PBP and 380.PBP.
4. Then run the CSO called "UPMS Installer" from your PSP by browsing to GAME / Memory Stick in XMB.
5. UPMS warning screen will appear "In order to Install the IPL to MS when using 3.80 M33+, we must write to flash...." Press X and wait for UPMS to exit to XMB.
6. Place the 150, 371.PBP and 380.PBP in root/base level of the MS.
7. Run the UPMS installer again from GAME/ Memory Stick in XMB.
8. A menu will appear with 4 steps, we want to complete the first 3.
9. Select Step 1 (IPL Tools) and install the "Sleep Fix Multi-IPL to Memory Stick", then back to Main Menu.
10. Select Step 2 (Battery Tools) and choose "Create Pandora Battery (Service Mode)", then back to Main Menu.
11. Select Step 3 (Firmware Tools) and choose "Install U.P.M.S with Utilities (Slowest)". It will take a few minutes to install and lots of scrolling text will appear on the PSP screen.
12. When thats finished you can go back to the Main Menu and exit the Installer. Turn off your PSP and remove the MS and Battery from CFW PSP.

What to do: PSP CFW < 3.80 M33
4. Place the 150, 371.PBP and 380.PBP in root/base level of the MS.
5. Then run the CSO called "UPMS Installer" from your PSP by browsing to GAME / Memory Stick in XMB.
6. A menu will appear with 4 steps, we want to complete the first 3.
7. Select Step 1 (IPL Tools) and install the "Sleep Fix Multi-IPL to Memory Stick", then back to Main Menu.
8. Select Step 2 (Battery Tools) and choose "Create Pandora Battery (Service Mode)", then back to Main Menu.
9. Select Step 3 (Firmware Tools) and choose "Install U.P.M.S with Utilities (Slowest)". It will take a few minutes to install and lots of scrolling text will appear on the PSP screen.
10. When thats finished you can go back to the Main Menu and exit the Installer. Turn off your PSP and remove the MS and Battery from CFW PSP.

How to use:

For Slim: (MS and Battery removed)

1. Turn off PSP and insert Pandora MS.
2. Slide PSP power switch to Hold Position with yellow dot showing.
3. Hold down L-Trigger.
4. Insert Pandora Battery.
5. Keep L-Trigger pressed. PSP will boot up (no display), then shut down.
6. Remove battery and move PSP power switch to normal position.
7. Hold down L-Trigger and insert Pandora Battery.
8. When MS access light starts flashing orange, release L-Trigger
9. UPMS Cuatro Menu should appear giving the option to use DC V3 for 3.71 M33-2 or DC V4 for 3.80 M33-5.
10. Make your choice of which FW to install. 3.71 M33 is stable, bug free, works with all released UMD games, 3.80, 3.90 M33 is brand new, has a few issues but has auto-update feature.
11. Backup NAND with square [ ] and it will write NAND to your MS, you will need 64MB of free space for this. When this is finished your PSP will power off.
12. Repeat steps 6-8 and you will be presented with UPMS Cuatro Menu again.
13. Press X this time to install your CFW of choice.

Save nanddump.bin in root of MS to your PC when you are finished for safe keeping, incase you brick your PSP one day.

For Phat:(MS and Battery removed)

1.Turn off PSP and insert Pandora MS.
2.Hold down L-Trigger.
3.Insert Pandora Battery.
4. UPMS Cuatro Menu should appear giving the option to use DC V3 for 3.71 M33-2 or DC V4 for 3.80 M33-5.
5. Make your choice of which FW to install. 3.71 M33 is stable, bug free, works with all released UMD games, 3.80, 3.90 M33 is brand new, has a few issues but has auto-update feature.
6. Backup NAND with square [ ] and it will write NAND to your MS, you will need 32MB of free space for this. When this is finished your PSP will power off.
7. Repeat steps 2-4 and you will be presented with UPMS Cuatro Menu again.
8. Press X this time to install your CFW of choice.

Save nanddump.bin in root of MS to your PC when you are finished for safe keeping, incase you brick your PSP one day.[/QUOTE]

Multi-Booting PSP with IPL loader:
This UPMS package has one great feature in that if you don't hold down L-Trigger when you insert Pandora Battery it will boot your PSP as per normal. This feature works on all
Phat PSPs with any CFW but only on the Slim PSP using CFW 3.90 M33-2.
If you have more than one MS, run the UPMS installer again from that MS and only install "Sleep Fix Multi-IPL to Memory Stick".
This will enable you to keep your battery in Service Mode at all times even when switching your MS around.

Thanks:
Big thanks to No45 for volunteering his services in testing this tutorial on his CFW PSP Slim and sending me back his valuable feedback including taking and hosting pics.
Thanks also to the ever present Mejilan and Faceless Master.

hey nice tutorial navanmann.
i hacked my psp slim with it to 3.90 m33-2. buut i have a question.
when i shutdown the psp from inside a game that i loaded as an iso from the memorystick, it makes some really nasty clicking/seeking noises in the umd drive when i have no umd in it . with umd in it the drive spins up for a bit before it shuts down, but no nasty clicking noises.
is that supposed to be this way?

I'm trying to install custom firmware on my 3.80 PSP slim and I've been following the steps described in this post but I'm stuck at "How to use" because my Datel TOOL Battery boots up and shows a black screen. What gives? :(

(EDIT1) OH! A new guide!
(EDIT2) Hey, I don't have any ISO folder on my PSP formatted MS stick. Should I create one?

Oh well. I'll try the first guide... again.

Yeah I'm trying it a second time and... Ah! You should put the MS in AFTER the Datel TOOL Battery boots up the PSP. Once again, I'm stupid :)

(EDIT1) Nope... black screen. Not booting to my MS with the Pandora Battery drivers 'n stuff.
(EDIT2) Sorry for all the edits but it seems that it's working but that my PSP isn't displaying on-screen text during service mode.

You are making the MS with it in your PSP so don't remove it. Did the important part the IPL writing complete successfully after "4. Universal Unbricker: 3.71 M33 Installer"

Yup, I use a SanDisk Ultra II 8GB with it (3.90 M33-2) and it runs flawlessly.

Are there any noticeable loading difference between an Ultra II and regular ones. I once made a mistake by paying premium for an Ultra II card for my PDA and the performance difference was minimal because the hardware wasn't capable. These things were designed for high speed writing but what I am interested most is read performance. No point getting something uber fast if the PSP can't handle it.

I've read that there is a considerable boost when copying files from other sources (your PC, your PS3) but not a huge difference with loading your games off of the stick (still, any benefit is worthwhile for me when it come to load times! heh).

I have just heard that SanDisk is the best for PSP so I decided to spend the extra ~$20 more and buy the SanDisk Ultra II 8GB over the Sony 8GB. I had also heard that Sony sticks can be problematic. Go figure.

Anyway, if you anyone is in the market for a 4GB stick, Costco has the SanDisk Ultra II 4GB MS Pro Duo for $36.99 ($56.99 - $20 instant rebate at register). An awesome, awesome price.

I think only thing they are faster at is write speeds. AFAIK the read speeds as about the same.
I think the bog standard Sandisk is faster than the Sony one.

Edit: Beaten.. :(
