PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Thanks. Write speed is a none-issue for me as the only time I will doing writing is when the PSP is tethered to the PC and saving games.

I have been using a 4GB card with no problems on 3.90 CFW. But if 8GB Sony cards are slow I will get a Sandisk one, especially since the price difference is minimal.

Isn't 4GB supposed to be a decent bit faster than 8GB?

It all boils down to the specs of the stick (my SanDisk Ultra II's in 4GB and 8GB have identical speed ratings, for example).

Personally, I love having an 8GB. I can just leave it in and I basically never need to swap (unless I want to downgrade...which is why I bought the aforementioned $37 4GB from Costco). It holds tons of stuff with room to spare (which is nice for download podcasts and demos).

I just remembered how "limiting" it was to have a 4GB on my old fat CFW PSP, so I splurged and bought the SanDisk 8GB for $120. I've found the 8GB to be the perfect size.

Wow. There's so much to try out now when I have CFW! I've already tested the PSP port of Cave Story and I'm at the moment ripping the first CD of FFVII. Do I need to use some external program to compile the PSOne ISO into a runnable file or do I just chuck it into the ISO folder (I'm running 3.71 m33-4)? And *jaw drop* at the amount of indie games out there! I hope somebody made a Peggle game :D

Also downloading ScummVM and digging through my wardrobe in search of my Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge CDs!

You can convert your PSX games to either single game EBOOTS or multi-disc games like FFVII or MGS with RS-GUI PopstationMD.
PSX game icons, sounds, etc can be found here.

I can't believe I went all this time ignoring CFE (custom firmware extender). It's great, although I can't get nethostfs or usbhostfs to work for shit.

Big thanks to No45 for volunteering his services in testing this tutorial on his CFW PSP Slim and sending me back his valuable feedback including taking and hosting pics.
Thanks for the credit. Like I said, happy to help. :)

One question I have that's semi-related to the CFW. I have a few PS1 games that I just won't be able to give the time to playing them on my PS3 so I'd like to rip them and play them on the go with the PSP.

Problem I'm having is that I can't seem to rip the CDs to ISO in the first place. I'm using PowerISO (Full version), but when I try and rip a PS1 disc I get an I/O error. Now I'm pretty sure it's because of the type of CD (The black ones) because ripping works fine when I try it with a standard silver data CD.

Anyone have any experience of this? I've tried ripping on a couple of different laptops (Personal Dell one and my Tosh from work) with the same results. Do I just need to try it on a machine with a more robust CD drive?

Thanks. :)

Thanks for that. CloneCD allows me to rip it, though it didn't give me the choice to rip the image to a format, it's just ripped it straight to a .img file (With a .sub and .ccd as well).

So I guess it's possibly a problem with the copy protection in PowerISO. Which is a shame, because I only bought it a few days back. I'll get in touch with their support and see what they say.

I didn't even know of any indie games for the PSP. I would like to know a site as well.

Also, what's a good site with tutorials and info on the features of CFW. I am at the lowest CFW at the moment and have heard of tons of different features that the PSP allows.

Plugin that allows for a bunch of conveniences like USB and Wireless streaming of ISO, CSO and homebrew.

Button combinations (usually the audio music note button and something else) allows you to connect via USB, wireless FTP so you don't have to plug in your PSP to move files. Bunch of shit.

How do I get CWCheat working on 3.71 M33? The boot menu lets me enable it fine, and I'm using the 3.71 plugins from the most recent version, but holding select gives me nothing, even on an official memory stick.

Well last Saturday when I got my new PSP slim, I modded it with 3.71 m33. Now I've owned a PSP before (twice), but CFW really makes a regular PSP look like less than half a handheld! It's like discovering there's an entire world just out side your front door. Amazing stuff.

Nothing like FFVII or Cave Story on the go. :D

I'm having save issues now w/ .CSO and I assume .ISO files.

The PSP freezes often when auto saving. This happening to anyone else?

I'm on 3.90 M33-2 btw.

*After double-checking the fw version I'm running, I got a red error screen. 2nd one in an hour. Think I might have to re-flash...

Anyone on 3.90 M33-2 using POPSloader having any issues with multi-disc games.
I have MGS EBOOT.PBP with the 2 discs combined and if I try and start the game I get a blank screen after PSX logo.
If I press HOME and then RESET and choose load DISC 2, then the game will start correctly.

From what I've read this issue can also been found with Chrono Chross, I would imagine FFVII the same.

I remember spending £80 on a 128MB MS card for my Sony Clie and thought that was the perfect size. I really doubt 8GB will be enough as I plan to put very high quality (720x480) film rips on them to use with TV-out when going on holidays.

WOOT I finally got 3.71 M33 installed but i got alot of questions because of my PSP noobness. So first where can I find a PSX emulator and which one works best with slim? Same goes for SNES emulator. Lastly how do I rip my UMD games to a memory card is it a program, sorry for the noob questions but there so much and its all so confusing :D

SNES emulation really blows on the PSP.

We have near perfect emulation for GBA. How hard is it for SNES games?

Starfox barely works, and it runs just as fast as StarFox 64.

1. The one Sony provides, you need the POPS stuff.
2. There are no good ones.
3. Change the USB Device to UMD in the VSH (press select while in the XMB). Then just open a usb connection, it will open the umd and you just drag and drop the iso.

You guys are insane. Use SNES9X for SNES emulation, if you ever have framerate issues turn on frameskip. Frameskip will help the framerate greatly, and still looks just fine.

Starfox plays like crap with it on. Can't even render the planet select at full speed.

FFVI runs like ass on it too. Gotta set frameskip to 3 to get it even close to playable. =/

Yet, I can play Marvel vs. Capcom on it without a hitch.

Another question, how do you run the ISO's that you copied from your UMD? Do you have to create a special folder or run a plugin?

Make sure you have it listed on GAME for PSP games and POP(S?) for ps1 games, not on VSH or something else.

Yes you do. Either a friends with CFW who can mod your one or get a Datel TOOL battery and mod it yourself.

Anyone have a good guide on how to take a PSX game CD and turn it into an ISO so you can run it on your 3.71 M33-4? I having a hard time finding a guide on how to do it. Also are the 8 gig Sony memory cards any good? Was wondering because I had heard they are slow but I wanted to make sure before I order one.

is 3.90 M33-2 the most recent CFW and the one I should be upgrading to right now? I want to play this Space Invaders demo and it wont let me on my 3.71 CFW psp.

Okay, my PSP Phat is still on ol' 3.10 OE-A', and want to upgrade to the latest firmware. Is there any way of doing this without the "Pandora Battery" mentioned in the first post?

Yes, since you are still on custom firmware you can upgrade to 3.52 M33, then from there you can go right to 3.90 M33 I believe? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I forget the version requirements on these things.

You will have to go to 3.52 M33, then apply patch 4, and then onto 3.90 M33 from there.

ok i have the slim. I just need one more confirmation that i HAVE to order this pandora battery to mod it... ANY alternative?

I think I said NO yesterday, that Pandora is the ONLY way to mod a brand new Slim PSP.

Hello,

Would like some help. The last custom firmware I used was 1.5. I now have a 3.80 M33-5 Slim and Lite and would like to be able to play PSP/PSone games from my memory stick. Last I remember, I used an app called Fast Loader to play my PSP games...that was ages ago. Is FL still in use, or do I have to use something else? Also, I see that there are two versions of POPS Loader on DA's site, which one should I go with?

Any pointers to helpful tutorials would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. One last thing, where the best place to get homebrew apps/games? Thanks.

I am pretty sure that all recent CFW have an iso loader inherently built in.

PSP game ISO/CSO's are run from the ISO folder of your Memory Stick.
PSX games are played from the PSP/GAME folder. POPSloader is for PSX games only, used so that you can play certain PSX games under compatible FW POPS.
For example, RE2 only plays under 3.52 POPS, use POPSloader to select this FW when playing the game.

to make an iso, you can use isobuster.

1or761.png

just right click on the cd and make a bin/cue.

as for converting the iso to a pbp, i use the cmdline tool, but i think the most popular GUI is PSX2PSP

Many thanks for the info, guys. Since there's an ISO loader built in, is there also a ripper built in so I can rip my UMD games?

Also, navanman - is there a guide somewhere that tells you which PSone games work under which POPS Loader firmware?

I have a slim and want to put CF on it, do I still get ALL the advantages of having the Official FW still? Or do most of you have a 2nd PSP you do this with thats why it works so well?

Currently you do, yes. Custom firmware is up to 3.90 M33-2 and 3.90 is also the current official firmware version.

I've ripped an ISO of the first disc of FFVII and made an runnable EBOOT file and it works great... a little to good actually. It's running too fast, the music is sped up. I guess that this is an issue with it being a rip of our crappy PAL port. Is there some way to get the emulator into a PAL mode or something? :)
