It won't take you long to finish at all (it's a single sitting thing), but have a look at Rorschach. It's an adventure game with a really beautiful art style. I keep it on my PSP just to show people how cool homebrew games can be.

There's also OpenTTD which is pretty good. Kind of cramped on the PSP screen but hey, it's portable Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Makes me wish someone would do an open source version of the Rollercoaster Tycoon engine. Please?

I've seen Rorschach when it was first posted, but for OpenTTD thanks, you've hit a bullseye, I'll download it ASAP.

By the way, 3.90 totally fixed every issue I've had, themes and Internet radio works like charm.

Anything made for 1.50 won't work on a Slim at all. Slim doesn't support 1.50. Yet.
eLoader says otherwise. It doesn't run NATIVELY, no. But with the help of this, it looks like it does. I just answered my own question, I guess. O:

I remember looking at a confusing compatibility list back when I first decided I wanted a PSP. I guess this is what it was related to.

I would wait a little longer before messing with eLoader as Dark_Alex is currently beta testing a dual boot solution with 1.50FW called "Time Machine".

I can't do shit with my PSP slim running official 3.80 firmware... right? :(

Wrong :) You either need access to somebodies already modded PSP or to acquire a Datel TOOL Battery.

Yeah I've seen those tool batteries that put your PSP into service mode but they're really expensive here in Sweden, like $90! Oh well... I'll save up and get one.

So I need the battery and custom firmware on my memory stick (for installing) and I'm good to go?

Yeah but I don't know any people who own a PSP. I know like one person who games and he's not interested in portables.

Thanks for the links navanman, greatly appreciated :)

How can I add the manual files? Do I have to create them a special way? do they need to be created when I create the PSP files or can they be added later?

Thanks for reminding me about this, I've been meaning to get round to playing around with that area of POPS. Here's a tutorial I found to create and use them: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/455469

Mr. Pointy, what are your problems with 3.80M33-5? If it's the loader issue or the memory stick slowdown, then I doubt you will see a difference, but if I was you I would go up to 3.90M33 anyways, it's virtually the same as 3.80 and it will be updated and supported in the long run. However, if these glitches are seriously affecting your PSP I do recommend Pandora to 3.71 M33-4 until a suitable cure is found.

Lies...you don't need friends. I have gamer friends none of which had a PSP yet after seeing Jeanne D'arc, FFT, Crisis Core, God of War etc, I was like I'm getting a PSP. When I got it I was in the same boat as you, had no clue how I was going to get custom firmware on it, without buying a battery or trying to find someone to help me who already had a battery.

So I read up on it and decided to physically turn my own battery that came with the Slim into a service battery. It basically just required an Exacto Knife and a few minutes of my time. You basically just carefully (very carefully) splice the case open on the battery and make one tiny little cut and that's it your battery is now Pandora'd. You will also need a program to set up your memory card (do this first) like TOTALNewbi easyInstaller to set the memory card up properly. I think in total it took me about 30 mins or so and after that I had custom firmware installed. The only thing you will need extra is a spare battery, unless you want to go back into the Pandora battery you made and if you make the cut properly along the pcb you can just use a pencil to basically reconnect the traces and turn it back into a regular battery. It sounds complex but honestly it isn't just Google a bit and you'll find videos/pictures that walk you through everything. It is so worth it, there are some awesome homebrew apps out there for it, and the ability to rip your games to Memstick (way nicer loading times vs UMD) is very nice.

Yeah, I read about that shortly after posting. And I was once again confused, haha.

I don't even have my PSP yet, I don't know why I'm worrying about it right now. But I want it so bad. ):

I'd like to hear Gaffers talk about POPS with multi-disc games packed in the same Eboot. Anyone got issues? Which version of POPS must I choose to run with a multidisc game?

All POPS files over 3.71 support multi-disc Eboots, but obviously different games have a different degree of compatibility with certain POPS files. For example, my FF7 multi-disc Eboot has a dodgy time with 3.90 POPS files, but works a treat with 3.72.

My biggest problem is actually getting files that I transfer to my memstick to work. For instance I just downloaded the GOW PSP demo, unzipped it, and when I transfer it I just get a corrupted data icon. I tried putting the entire folder in /PSP, PSP/GAME, and nothing. I even tried simply putting the EBOOT file into various folders with no luck. This is likely just dumbassery on my part but I'm having the same problem with ROMs. The only luck I've had with ROMs is with Genesis (Picodrive) ROMs.

Any PSP games requiring 3.80 yet? I'm interested in Wipeout Pulse next week but a little concerned about this. I have 3.71 M33-4 right now.

3.90 needs popsloader for some ps1 games.

My MGS is not working on 3.90.

Other than that, it's great.

Popsloader from 3.80M33-5 works fine on 3.90. Multi-disc MGS EBOOT works best on 3.71 POPS from my testing.

Would someone be kind enough to point me to a set of instructions to get popsloader running on my slim 3.80m33-5 for the first time? I read somewhere that I need to "activate" the plugin on the recovery menu but the plugin field is blank (?).

Thanks.

Hey guys, some newbie questions.

So I guess 3.90 isn't the best choice if you want to play PSone games? I'm new to this and will be getting someone to do a downgrade for me. I hear 3.80 is buggy. I want a stable custom firmware that I'll be able to play PSP/PSone games with and use homebrew apps/software. Please recommend something.

Thanks.

The GOW PSP demo is an ISO, stick it in the "ISO" folder on the memory stick root (create if not there).

People NEED to pay attention to what the fuck they're putting on their mem stick. There's a huge damn difference between an ISO/CSO and a freakin' eboot!

People also need to start paying attention to the posts in this thread, there's so many people asking for POPSLoader guidance when I did a write up on it a few pages back and a load of us have gone over it so many times. Would it make sense to gather all these useful posts and create an official CFW Thread of Tutorial Win? It will save us so much time whenever there's a new firmware and people start joining again, as this is just madness at the moment. The lack of searching and reading in these threads beggers belief.

I've been tempted to, heavily tempted.

But I don't think it'd put much of a dent into all of the stupid questions, IMHO.

Certainly, Navanman's awesome Pandora tutorial was a bust in that sense.

If that's geared toward my question about God of War, well, it downloaded as an EBOOT. I know the difference between ISOs and EBOOTs. It's just that all this is rather complicating to me since this is the first time I've messed with anything this technical, at least concerning hacks. But I'm learning.

Well we could just reply to every question with the URL of the OP of the Tutorial Thread until it starts to sink in. I wonder if m0dus would want to do some graphics, we can have some little kids crying or something and burned out PSPs everywhere, and little phrases like "Control + F!" and such.

Well that doesn't make sense, the demo was originally on a UMD, ripping produces an ISO "UMD9660".
I suggest a different download.

I have a 8 month old fat PSP that i bought new, it currently has regular 3.71 firmware on it and i want to downgrade and/or put custom firmware on it, can anyone point in the direction of an easy tutorial, every time i try to look something up it only applies to slims or early PSPs.

I think I'm turning into a parrot!
Anyway you need a Datel TOOL battery or a PSP battery already converted to Service Battery. Then you use this guide to make the mod your PSP.

The OP should be updated regularly FAQ-style. It's extra work, but it would save you and some of the others some repetition. PEACE.

Can i use my game save stick? Or will it delete my saves?

Soory if this is harsh but please read before you post:
5. Press ENTER to format your PSP. Depending on the size of MS being used, this can take up to 5 minutes to complete.
6. Press ENTER to set the drive label and then Y at the next prompt to format MS again.

Format=no data,blank, everything gone...

This may or may not be CFW related, but does anyone know how to play .swf file on the PSP?

For example i have 2 flash swf files (a video and a game) on my hard drive and i want to play these though the PSP, either through the browser or via some homebrew app im unaware of. Note that the game is just a simple point and click (maybe click and drag too).

DaCocoBrova

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
I remember years ago, I has a USBhostfs (something like that) USB ISO loader option. Basically allowed you to load ISO files from your computer via USB versus having them sitting on your memory stick.

Is there anyway to still do this?

3.90 M33-2

Requeriments:

- 3.52 M33-3 or higher

Instructions.

- Copy UPDATE folder to /PSP/GAME and run the program.

If you are in 3.90 M33, that's all needed.
If you are in previous version, you need to download 390.PBP and put it in same folder or let
the program to download it for you.

Changes:

- Improvements in plugins loading code:

* Fixed some problems with problematic cards due to filesystem not mounted.
* Now plugins should read the faster.
* Problem fixed with lines with spaces at the end.

- Added the rest of regions to the recovery option fakeregion.

- (PSP SLIM): Added patches in nand ipl to allow Booster multiiplloader and TimeMachine iplloader to boot from nand.

Note: only 3.90 M33-2 and higher can be booted from nand in slim with those ipl loaders,
not official Sony firmwares or previous versions of M33.

Changes in updater:

- The 3.90 eboot downloading code is now more stable, no more freezes after selecting AP
- Memory stick write in the 3.90 downloading code is delayed the maximum possible for faster operation

(the system prefers big chunks of data written at once).
yay?
