PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Boot into Recovery Mode - Configuration and change GAME HOMEBREW folder from 1.50 to 3.52 and installer will work. You don't have to go to 3.80 M33 first. You can go straight from 3.52 M33-3 to 3.90 M33.

The issues with MS ISO loading/stuttering are still present in 3.90 M33. The fatsmod file is the same as Sony 3.80 / 3.80 M33-5.
The severity of this issue depends on your brand, size of MS and which NO UMD LOADER you are using. With Sony NP9660 it seems to be worse so I recommend using M33 driver instead.

PicoDrive went from loading games (SegaCD especially) damn near instantly to waiting well over a minute for the initial load (before the SegaCD/Sonic splash). Annoying as hell.

I should've stayed w/ 3.80 M33-5

Also, should I create a GAME390 folder for homebrew? When I do, nothing shows up. If I leave them in the GAME150 folder, they show up and work (save for the MVS/CPS/CPS@ and Bookr apps).

PicoDrive is fine with my MegaDrive stuff, with the upper limit of loading times reaching a rather tolerable 14 seconds. Dark Alex said on the Max Console forums that there was an error in the coding which left the homebrew folder at GAME380, so just leave it as that and it should be fine.

So my friend bought a psp from japan, and wanted me to help him make a pandora battery. My actual concern is, does the JPN model use the same firmware as US? i can downgrade/upgrade his psp with the same files i used on my US one?

Any cheap or just battery recommendation for what i should use to make into pandora?

I'm trying to get SVCapture going but no luck. I have 3.71 M33. Got the 1.50 stuff but all the SVCapture stuff talks about having 1.5 or 2.71. I'm lost. :(

So... what's the best program to convert videos to the PSP format?

Is there a way for the PSP to play AVI, WMV, MOV, FLV files without converting them?

Not yet, there's some hope that Sony might add AVI support now that they have a DivX license, but nothing has been done so far.

I use Xvid4PSP version 4 (version 5 sucks nuts in my opinion, they took away a lot of useful options).

1. Put plugin.prx in \seplugins
2. Edit vsh.txt, game.txt and pops.txt in \seplugins and add ms0:\seplugins\plugin.prx to the end of each file (these files specify where your plugin should work - VSH is the XMB, game is PSP games and pops is PS1 games)
3. Reboot your PSP into recovery mode, go into the plugins menu and enable your new plugin.

Obviously plugin.prx should be replaced by the actual prx filename of your plugin.

I did that, but I still have no clue how to use this plugin. It doesn't say anything about button commands or anything.

Apparently it takes a good chunk of time to convert them :( ...

You can switch to one of the "Turbo" encoding settings to make it take less time, but then there's a potential lowering of quality of the output.

First result on Google came up with:

Music Button = Take ScreenShot / Stop Recording Video
Right Shoulder Button + Music Button = Start Recording Video
Right Shoulder Button + Left Shoulder Button + Music Button = Start Recording "Advanced Video Mode"

Which is all well and good for SVCapture. Which this isn't. SVCapture mentions that in its readme. This continues to have no details anywhere.

You mentioned earlier in the thread that you were trying to get SVCapture to work:

I'm not sure if you're trying to help or mock me, but follow the conversation if you could. The Faceless Master suggested another one which I downloaded and activated, but since its readme contains no useful information, I'm stuck. The link he has given goes to a message board and there are several people there with the same problem but several who go on as if they know what they need to do. I'd hope someone could point me in the right direction.

If you just want to take screenshots use the plugin on this page. I've been using it since about 3.71 M33 and it's worked on every CFW up to and including 3.90 M33. Just hit the music button and it'll freeze things while it takes the shot, and then leave it in the PICTURE folder on the Memory Stick (viewable through the PSP's photo menu).

If you don't mind not getting a high resolution, WinAvi is so much faster than anything else. Anime episode in like 6 minutes (depending on hardware of course).

That's the one I have. I dunno if I have to do something else besides enable it in the restore menu but it doesn't seem to do anything when I press the music button.

Weird...I went into the Recovery Menu again to confirm they were enabled. They were, I went back in and this time it's working. WTF? Oh well!

Why, no! No I have not!
Somehow I read that game.txt works for pops but obviously I was mistaken!

Ok i'm every new to PSP CFW group. I have a PSP Slim and I want to put CFW on it, I just want to make sure I do it correctly and don't brick my PSP. First do I use this Open Source Pandora Battery tool for 3.xx kernels to turn a fat PSP battory into a Danta Tool Battory right? Or is this wrong program? After that the instructions say make a full 1.50 memory stick but i thought the slims couldn't do 1.5, this stuff really confusing at the start.

I'd recommend just buying this for $28 shipped to the U.S. Then all you need is any battery and a 32MB to 4GB Memory Stick.

Anyone got Cave Story working on FW 3.XX? I put the game folder in GAME150 but it doesn't appear in my games list.

EDIT: Nevermind, it went to the bottom of the list...

By the way, are there any topic / specific webpages discussing homebrew games? I really want to try some, I've finished Cave Story months ago and I need my next dose. Or any recommendations?

Is there any reason I shouldn't go to 3.90 m33 on my phat psp? i currently have 3.80 m33-5.

Not really, even iR Shell has a patch to work with 3.90 M33 now, and there's not that much of a difference for us phat users as far as I can tell with my personal experience with it.

My PSP has been collecting dust for some time now, so I felt it was time to update it and start using it again.

I'm on one of the very first OE-versions, and I gather that I can't update directly to 3.90 M-33? So, can someone tell me what I have to do first?

You need to go to:

3.XX OE to 3.52 M33
3.52M33 to 3.53 M33-4
3.52 M33-4 to 3.80, 3.90 M33.

All the M33 files you need are on Dark_Alex website. You will need to then download the Sony FW files for that firmware.
So for 3.52 M33, you need to download the Sony 3.52FW, rename it to 352.PBP and place in same folder as the M33 files. Rinse and repeat for 3.52 M33-4 to 3.80, 3.90 M33.

It won't take you long to finish at all (it's a single sitting thing), but have a look at Rorschach. It's an adventure game with a really beautiful art style. I keep it on my PSP just to show people how cool homebrew games can be.

There's also OpenTTD which is pretty good. Kind of cramped on the PSP screen but hey, it's portable Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Makes me wish someone would do an open source version of the Rollercoaster Tycoon engine. Please?

Dark Alex has just released Version 2 of the 1.50 Add-On for 3.90M33 Phat PSPs. Here is the info on the additions from the readme:

Dark Alex said:
- TA086: when being in 4th brightness level and recovering from sleep mode, the display was black. Fixed.
- Added support in the 1.50 kernel for memory sticks greater than 4 GB. (I finally got my 8GB card! :D)
Before, only the first 4 GB portion was recognized by the 1.5 kernel.
Now, the theroetical limit is 4GB*512 = 2 Terabytes. ("only" 1 TB, if sony were using signed variables).

Just how limited is 1.50-based homebrew on a Slim? I've read that some of it works after a fashion, and I've seen a couple compatibility lists, but they're hard to decipher. Or maybe I'm stupid.

Pretend I'm stupid. D:
