PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Seems to me TN was just bitching because pro B worked first. Not sure how someone can steal code from someone else when the "thief" releases his work first.
You do know that TN-D was demonstrated as working weeks ago via YouTube right? The drama was apparently caused by the 6.35 Pro guy having a test build of TN-D and stealing the POPS code from that.

From what I've read, the reason TN-D is coming out afterward is because 6.35 isn't going to be as comprehensive and TN wants to prove that the PRO guy is just cannibalizing his code by waiting until the 6.35 Pro update comes out by then releasing a much better 6.20 TN-D. It doesn't make sense any other way that it's taken this long for them to release, since TN already demonstrated TN-D a month ago.

I'll be supporting whatever comes first. There is not really any excuse to withhold projects because of scene drama.

6.35 PRO gets a nod of recognition from me for stepping in and doing what TN promised to do, but didnt (getting HEN on 6.35).

It's out now thank god for the downgrader tho if/when TN-D comes out I do prefer 6.20 because it seems to run more programs for me.

I would assume going straight from Pro to Pro B shouldn't matter.

Popsloader works on 6.35 Pro-B. It's kind of hit or miss for me at the moment. I could simply not be doing things correctly on my end. Finding reliable mac software is also proving difficult. Too many variables. Don't know if its my software or Pro-B or user error.

I'm getting extremely frustrated.
I've converted 2 games, both giving me a black screen. Do we need a plugin to load these or what? :X

Black screens at what point? Like I said, it is real hit or miss, particularly while I'm converting on my Mac. I'll hook up my PC this weekend to try to get a better idea of what is going on. Pro-B doesn't have a POPs loader (ie: can't pick which pops firmware you want to run) so compatibility will be limited due to this.

Damn. Guess I'll continue to wait for a better version. I think Lunar 2 in particular needs a specific pops to run properly. I would love to get in on that dual boot action though.

I can play vagrant story no problem. Chrono Cross wont load past the "published by square" screen which i hear is normal unless you have specific pops firmware

So I installed Pro-B on my PSP Go and tried all the PS1 eboots I had lying around in my PSP-1000. Here's what I've tried so far.

Not Working:

Parasite Eve

Working:
Vagrant Story
Front Mission 3

I tried Resident Evil and Policenauts.
when i launch the game, i get a black screen immediately for both of them.
I used psx2psp 1.4 to convert the discs.
Should i use something else? I see that Policenauts works..

Not sure if I've got this right, but if we want all the different versions of popsloader, we'll have to wait until TN-D?

Better question is, does this run on PSP-1000's and is it perma?

Very awesome. The moment I've been waiting for since getting a PSP Go.

A couple of questions, though.

1. What is the best way to convert PS1 games to the PSP's POPS? I remember doing it years ago, but I've been out of the loop for too long, and people above are having problems, too.

2. I see there's 635 PRO-B and also the Recovery Menu. What is the Recovery Menu for? I can't find that information...

I made that Policenauts file a few years ago so I don't remember how I built it so I just made a new version using PSX2PSP v1.4.2. I didn't change any settings but I did use some custom icon images etc. and I'm playing it now and it's working fine.

For some reason I thought 6.35 Pro-B was only going to be for the original model PSPs. But last night I realized I could put in on my Go, and now I'm in PS1 Heaven.

Funny thing is, last night I could barely get any of my rips to work. This morning, however, I've got Parasite Eve, Lunar 2, and both Suikodens running. I think I'm gonna need a bigger memory card.

I've been out of the loop for a while, is this 6.35 Pro-B the latest and best I can install on my Go? Are there any new emulators that'll work on it too? Thanks

I'm wondering this as well. And is this actually custom firmware or still HEN where you need run that exploit every time you boot up the Go?

PS1 support seems really hit or miss. Some people are getting games working perfectly, but others (like myself) are struggling. This is what I get:

Working:

Vagrant Story
Policenauts

Not Working:

Final Fantasy VIII - black screen on startup
Resident Evil 2 - black screen on startup
Resident Evil 3 - black screen on startup
Dino Crisis - black screen on startup

Kind of working:

Dino Crisis 2 - freezes when accessing menu.

I have converted using PSX2PSP v 1.4.2 and am playing on a Go.

The TN-C HEN is signed, so you don't have to run the exploit every time you boot up. I don't know about this Pro-B, though.

Even though it is signed, don't you still have to run the exe everytime. That's how I do it for my psp-3000.

You don't have to do the Patapon 2 save exploit anymore, though. I guess if pressing one button really gets someone down, he can always just keep it in sleep mode.

Do these CFW PSOne compatability things affect actual PSN store downloads? like if I bought RE2/3 from the store and use CFW would it also black screen?

I remember RE2 and 3 as well as FF8 having problems years back on popsloader for a long time.

So its been a while since I last updated or paid attention to the cfw updates but I picked up Tactics Ogre the other day on UMD and every time I try to install the game or play the first battle it blacks out and the psp shuts down. I am running 5.50 prometheus-4 on my psp 2k. Is there no way of fixing this?

I guess the other question I have is, can I update my firmware to something that can play the game and then just revert back to 5.50 Pro-4? I really don't want to loose the ability to use my emulators and custom eboots.

(one option I have seen is upgrading to 6.35 ofw and then when I want to downgrading back to 5.50 Prometheus-4 via Recovery Flasher 1.65. Does that take away functionality from my psp if I do the upgrade and then downgrade again? I want to make sure my cfw stays hardware based so I can use custom eboots for ps1 games and emulators and such....)

So, with the price drop, I think it's time to buy another PSP, but questions abound:

1) With stock firmware, can I load UMD games onto the memory stick?

2) Does CFW work on the newest model (3003?).

3) I have a... large PS1 collection, and am not particularly inclined to re-buy all of the games I ate ramen to afford in college. With CFW, how compatible is the PS1 emulator? Is there a good resource that tracks this?

That said, if I can do 1), I'll probably stick with stock firmware and just stick with the official PS1 emulator.

Thanks guys.

Dropping from 6.35 ofw to 5.50 Prome-4 will cause you to lose the things that 6.35 offers, but you'll still be able to use custom eboots and emulators when you go back to 5.50 Prome-4.

1) No, you can't load UMD games onto a memory stick with OFW.

2) Permanant CFW doesn't work with the 3000. If you're running 6.20 or 6.35, you can run a temporary one that you have to load each time you boot the system.

3) It really just depends on the game. Different games run better of different firmwares. Just depends on what Sony did when they changed updated the emulator. I can't remember if there are any resources to track compability.

Seems like that's the way I will have to go then. Does jumping from ofw to cfw make my save game files unusable? I did an update last night from Prome-2 to 4 and it made the TO save I had corrupted.

Also I don't know if anyone knows but do you have to downgrade on a psp with 6.35 ofw first before you revert back to 5.50 Prome-4? I have been looking at the readme for Recovery Flash but I am not sure if I am clear on that part. I know my 2k motherboard is 100% not version 3.

Thanks for the help so far!

Hm, I just read the guide and it seems like i should wait for TN HEN-D so I can play my own rips of PSX titles?

On a related note, does anyone know what the best tool(s) is to rip and convert my PSX CDs (particularly Xenogears, don't want to repurchase it again) so that they can be used on the PSP Go (with CFW)? I am on a Mac. :/

Not sure about save files, but there is a file you can get for the recovery flasher that will let you got straight to 5.50.

That's what I did when I switched back from 6.37 ME after I fixed my PS1 files.

So I got Dino Crisis working - by changing compression level to 5 (wtf?).

I also got Resident Evil 2 working using the Dino Crisis game ID and settings (SLUS 00922, and it doesn't freeze when entering the police station as I feared, so go me for finding another workaround for that particular problem).

I wouldn't think so since both the PSN games and the games we make ourselves will be using the version of Pops included in flash. When you start using different versions of Pops in Popsloader, that is when you start seeing problems with PSN games. Besides, you could just disable the Pops plugins in the VSH menu. I will try it later and report back.

See?
What i'm asking is if there is anything you have to do to get psx games working. Do i need to have a plugin? do i need to edit the vsh.txt?

Or does pro b natively support psx games? (i see you said something about disabling popsloader in vsh.txt)

It's all built into the fimware and just works by default - there is no extra settings that need to be enabled or anything like that.

The problem of black screens I believe is related to the games that have been converted, since we are finding that using different game IDs and compression levels seems to be fixing some of them.

The 6.35 Pro-B I downloaded came with another folder for a "Fast Recovery". Am I ever really supposed to use that or does it make little difference, even if coming from a cold boot?

Alright. Sounds streamlined enough. Thanks for the info.

Do you think there's any chance that we'll ever see a custom firmware for PSP-2000s again? I'm about to buy a damned Go just so I can actually play games I buy off the PSN store and so I can play PS1 titles with the new emulator.

It's tempting to check out the new 6.35 pro B, but I think I'll just hold off for TN HEN-D. Hopefully it'll be easier getting PSone games to run on it.
