PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Hello everyone! I am going to make the jump to a PSP 3004(from an old 1000), but I don't know where to start modding wise. Is there any guide available on the net? I've made searches on google, but I only find sites that point to 2009 old articles. :(

If you just want to test things out first, before diving into custom firmware, here is a temporary homebrew enabler that works great with OFW 6.39:

Is it safe to connect to the PSN (store) if you have CFW (639PRO_B6) and run your UMD-games from your memory stick or emulators?
Or should I turn the CFW off before connecting and turn it on again after with FastRecovery?

I have one of my PSN accounts active while running CFW but have wifi turned off right now.

I have a friend who got an used PSP 1000 with CFW preinstalled. What is the best version of the CFW that he should update to? his psp is in 5.50 GEN D i think but he bought GoW GoS and he cannot play it :/

I have a PSPgo and a 3000 and I know my way around those but I have never messed with a pandora battery or MMS and Im not even sure if his PSP have those already.

Just reboot the PSP since it isn't a perma-CFW?

That's what I meant.
That I turn off the CFW (by shutting down the power completely), turn it on again, turn on Wifi,
go, on PSN store and then after I'm finished buying stuff, turn CFW on again with FastRecovery.

That should work right?
Or is there no need to turn the CFW off at all and just connect to PSN?

so I have a PSP GO 6.30; what can I do? I've tried looking around online and reading this thread but I'm having issues understanding what works for psp go and what works for 6.30~

Anyone have a walkthru or FAQ that I could use?

Hey quick question? If I used this can I just delete it afterwards if I do not like it?

It just loads into temporary memory, so the PSP reverts back to normal when you turn it off.

I love my PSP-1000, but I really want a PSP Go these days. Anyone think the price will drop thanks to Vita or is it more or less plateaued now that it can run CFW?

Brobzoid

how do I slip unnoticed out of a gloryhole booth?
is there a good list/resource for homebrew (emulators and such) anywhere on the webs? All I find applying my low levels of google-fu is hacker sites that are impossible to navigate and don't tell me what works.

I want to play mother3 on my psp go 6.35 pro-b

Brobzoid

how do I slip unnoticed out of a gloryhole booth?
ok. so I've managed to get my psp to 6.35 pro b (5g), but it won't accept the emulator I downloaded (gbSP). and there is another icon in my [games] tab that is corrupted. does gbSP not work on PSP Go? Am I putting it in the wrong place (PSP/GAME)?

It's really frustrating digging around on the various sites that deal with this stuff and the huge amounts of comments asking for help in every update or blog post suggest that this is somewhat futile...

I just want to play mother3 ;-;

IMO, PRO firmware sucks. Stop using it and go to TN. At least Total Noob lets you connect to PSN without hanging on 6.39-TN.

As for gpsp, try putting it in /psp/game632 instead of just game. If that doesn't work, try /game150, if not that it may not work on PRO just yet.

So I should downgrade to 6.20 and install TN instead? I used wololo's CFW for dummies and it made it seem like TN required a higher understanding of what the fuck I would be doing so I picked pro based off of that. I'm really only interested in emulating mother3 at this point so if pro is considered worse for some reason other than GBA emulation, I don't mind.

I'll try moving the files around like you suggested and report back.

IMO, PRO breaks way to much shit I use to where I can't recommend it. TN is a simple boot, wait for the PSP to reset back to the XMB and get what I need going. Simple and done.

If you know the folder structures, you already know how to install most of the homebrew on PSP. So there really REALLY is no need to be using "idiot CFW" like PRO at all.

AFAIK there is a 6.32 TN, if not that, you can just upgrade to 6.39-TN and use that. I'd have to look for gpsp and try it for you if you really want since I'm on 6.39-TN anyway.

I have a PSP-2000 (hackable, it seems) and want to be able to play patched PS1 games and install my UMD copy of Peace Walker to my memory stick. I'd also like to be able to keep playing downloaded PSOne classics from the PSN. Currently running official 6.20. Can someone point me in the right direction? I just tried to install 6.39 ME-5 but I have no idea if that is what I want and it didn't work anyway.

Er-6.20-TN will run Peace Walker just fine and most PSX PSN games unless they outright bitch about the newest firmware?

I'm not sure what the issue is?

How much is a cheap GO? I have an old PSP 1000 that drives me nuts with its ghosting screen and bulk. The only upside is my Memory Stick Duo with Micro SD slots. I got a cheap 8GB from that, which I'd lose with the GO.

The Go has 16gb of internal memory anyway, so say goodbye to your cheap 8gb :p

Question for Wipeout Pulse fans:

I haven't touched Wipeout Pulse in a long time and with the Vita and Wipeout 2048 coming I thought I'd get back into it.

Since I last played Pulse, I've upgraded my CFW to 5.50GENp-D3. When I put in my old 2 GB memory stick and fired up Pulse, it said that it couldn't read any of the save files with downloadable content on them. The "regular" portion of my save files (medals, loyalty points for basic ships, time trial data) is fine but none of the DLC ships or tracks are there.

Has anyone else had this problem? Wipeout Pure, incidentally, works perfectly and has no problems with my save data.

I can't re-download the data as I no longer have my Euro account on which I first got that material, plus the PSN is down entirely here in Japan.

Is it a CFW problem? I think that my previous CFW was M33 3.71.

I'll try that. Thanks.

Hell, 6.20 OFW in general will run them all. PW only requires 5.55 Firmware, most PSX titles off PSN are a variety of firmwares at the time of their release. Outside of like Tekken and newer (maybe, don't have them to say) most of the others will run at 6.20 or below.

If you aren't running into anything that's bitching about the firmware, I'd say you're honestly fine.

Is it a CFW problem? I think that my previous CFW was M33 3.71.

Sounds to me like a DLC problem more than the PSN.

Couldn't disagree with you more. I used to be a TN proponent, but I now use Pro because it has better game compatibility.

I don't think it's connected to PSN; I just wanted to make the point that I can't go and re-download the material, in part because the PSN is inaccessible.

I'll try moving all the content onto a different memory stick, just to see what happens. I know that the Wipeout Pulse DLC attaches itself to a specific PSP and its unique serial number.

There really shouldn't be any problem with this DLC; it's never been on any memory stick than the one it's on now, and the only thing that has changed since I last played it is the CFW.

Slighty OT but has anyone had any experience replacing their 2000 screen? Mine's got a bunch of vertical lines running down it now so thinking of replacing. Used to be just the one line near the edge but now there's several more including one right down the middle, getting kinda distracting.

Ended up going with CFW 6.39 PRO-B7 on my PSP GO.

One of the better features and biggest reason I downloaded it was to use my content from the PS Store (downloaded across multiple region accounts) without having to account switch. However I'm getting the following errors when trying:

80010087
80020148

Should I be loading these not from the XMB? Thanks for any help.

Hi, Not custom firmware at all really but you guys seem to know your stuff.

Just installed uo_SNES9X on my psp 3000 on the latest firmware.

Runs fine when i fiddle with it a bit.

Any options i should have on/off to make it run the smoothest it can.I have upped the clock speed to 333 but on axelay it is still running sub 20fps during gameplay and the sound is crappy/Choppy. The sound is crappy on all of the games actually.
I know Axelay is one of the better games graphically but surely it should be running 30fps.

Cheers

What game(s) does TN have problems with? Serious question, anything I've thrown at it hasn't had issues compared to PRO where things wouldn't load or saves would mysteriously corrupt, like my Peace Walker save pages back. Run the plugin on PRO, doesn't work. Run it on TN, works and lets me use the save on 6.39 OFW.

Ok, So after getting pissed off with uO_snes9x I decided to get my first cfw.

Went with PROB6 LCFW on 6.39 OFW. Got SNes9xytl. Is this really the best SNES emulator?

It runs much better then uo_snes9x but still get slowdown in certain games and weird glitches in terranigma when speaking to people and slowdown when entering a battle on final fantasy 3 (6).

Contra 3 ran amazing until i got to the first boss and it was literally a single digit framerate. < this is my biggest gripe.

Hey GAF, trying to emulate Mother 3 on my PSP since i never played through it on this system, but im getting a weird pop out/clicky noise through the speakers (or headphones) of my PSP during game music. Happens with every version of gpSP ive tried.

Is there any way around this? i tried messing with the sound options but no dice.

Late, but...

I've done this. I ordered a replacement screen from DealExtreme and had to get myself a specific small screwdriver for it too (make sure it is 2000 compatible). Taking the machine apart and putting it back together is not that hard, it just takes a bit of patience and fiddling. There are several videos about it on youtube, just pick a random one that isn't too dark.

The biggest difficulty was putting the screen and the cover back together without a single dust particle on either. Even with a pressured air can it took me several tries of finally getting it right. But once I did, I was happy, since I had the exact same issue as you (vertical lines).

Oh, I hope you have small fingers. If you don't, it'll be a bit harder to put a few things back together, I believe.

Just download the OFW version that you want and update as usual.

* * *

Anyone have recommendations for screenshot and other notable plugins that is useful/works on 6.39 PRO b7. Just got the time to migrate and installed the latest PRO, just quite happy that I could dump my recent UMDs w/o patching stuff.

Does the old remotejoylite (even the TN updated ones) still work on this version?

What's the best way for me to go from 5.00 m-336 to the new stuff? I've had issues with Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy IV. I play a lot of emulators and old PSX games on my psp. Am I going to get screwed on that?

Well, it says my fw version is already higher and no need to install. System Information screen shows it as 9.00, i guess cfw uses it as a fool proof way to avoid getting back to ofw.
Tried to update to some newer cfw but it didn't work.

Can someone give me an idiot's guide to licenses? I've got Welcome Back games from one account, and now when grabbing those from another I'm getting "This system is activated with a different account" warning popup. If I'm toggling between two license sets, do I need something to 'save out' the existing license before accepting the new one?

I'm on official right now, but I have 6.39 TN-A available.

Edit: And as a corollary: I've downloaded a few free PSP things (Sackboy costumes, mainly) on my PS3 in the past, but never actually transferred them to my PSP. When do those licenses get assigned? That is, would they already be licensed at the time they were downloaded to the PS3 (which would be the license belonging to my old, non-Go PSP), or would they only gain a license after being copied (which means I could copy them at any convenient moment)?

@Berksy
Check your settings/recovery console for a setting that prevents you from updating.

@RoninChaos
I've updated a really old m33 CFW'ed PSP to 6.39 OFW and then to PRO. I've just dumped FFIV and 3rdBday, they're work fine. Dunno about PS1 games.

Is there a permanent patch for TN for the psp go?
edit. Never mind figured it out.

Another question. Is there a way to make folders in your game folder? I'm running TN-E

Has anyone managed to get a pdf reader to work on newer firmwares? The one someone in this thread recommended doesn't work for me (the readme says 1.5 is needed I think). Don't remember the name of it :( I'm on 5.50 Prometheus. Haven't kept up since Birth by Sleep.

Edit: Nvm, seems to be working perfectly all of a sudden o_O

You don't need to save anything as far as I know. To switch accounts, press triangle on Account Settings and then Delete Account. It'll let you log in with a different account after that. All your games and saves will be still on your PSP, but you just won't be able to use them without being logged in with the correct account.

Wow, information overload, I'm a bit lost.

Just snached a GO tonight. It's on 5.70 right now.

If is safe to upgrade to the last ofw knowing that I'll want to put a CFW in a few days ?
I need to grab the welcome back games and the 10 free games on the store.

PSN might force you to upgrade to 6.39 (I'm already on 6.39 when I redeemed stuff) - so just do it and get the latest PRO version (b7).

I just use the non-perma on my PSP-3000, less hassle and just turn it on when I want homebrew or play my rips.

Fox1304

If I understand well, non permanent cfw is a cfw that you "run" like a game to install, and that totally disappears when you shut the console off ( not sleep mode ) ? So that means full access to psn, bought stuff and everything as if there wasnt any cfw ?

Er-... Nothing? Besides Zinga Burga's POPstation for your own .iso rips. Otherwise PSN games are just put in /game/ and ran.

I just bought a brand new European PSP 3000 today. I am just wondering if there's a step by step guide for installing Custom firmware somewhere? Also, if I use it, I presume I cannot access PSN or play UMD games? Or, is that incorrect?

Usual disclaimer of course... but here's the gist:
Update to OFW 6.39
Download the appropriate CFW for your OFW (6.39 - http://code.google.com/p/procfw/downloads/list)
Place /FastRecovery and /PROUPDATE from the archive to your MS's /game folder
Run PROUPDATE to install

You can delete the /PROUPDATE and the OFW update file from your MS when you're done with it.

Just run Fast Recovery when you actually turn-off your PSP to enable it again. You could check if the CFW is running by pressing SELECT or in your SYSTEM INFORMATION from the XMB.
