PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Quick impressions:

The "new game" option contains one level, which lasts about as long as the levels in the original Rez. My joystick is broken so I had to play with the dpad. They translated the basic gameplay mechanics pretty well, but the instead of creating music to the rhythym of your attacks like in Rez it just plays the song normally, which kills a lot of Rez's appeal. It could have worked if the enemies appeared to the rhythym of the song, but the enemy placement didn't have any real rhyme or reason to it. The boss at the end of the level wasn't really a boss, it was just a ship that sent enemies at you. It does come with a level editor (and I think custom soundtracks, not sure though) so maybe someone can make some bitchin levels in the future. This is still a good effort, just don't get your expectations too high.

When I do network update to get 3.90M33 (currently 3.80M33) it says "Verifying 390.PBP...Incorrect file." and reboots.

How do you manually update?

Mejilan, does that application also rip PS1 games? Or just convert them to eboots?

No. I recommend ISOBuster for ripping ISOs out of PSOne games. Free version works perfectly.

Hmm, might be something wrong with the version of official 3.90 stored on DA's servers. As to a manual update, it's installed the same way as any other modern M33 update.

Question:

If I have a CFW PSP Slim with 3.90 but I do not have a pandora battery (CFWd by someone else), am I going to need one going forward to upgrade the firmwares or is that something I can just always do now through the custom network update or memory card?

Won't need one as far as I know. I just upgraded without it.

ummm i haven't been following this thread lately, i'm still using 3.71m33 and never got to update to 3.80m33 or later versions cuz of all issues people faced when they were released (slowdowns and whatnot) so i'm asking you wise people of GAF (especially you Mejilan):

Should I or Shouldn't to the latest M33 FW? or should i just wait for their 4.00CW?
note that i mostly prioritize performance over features...

so what say you GAF?

Unless you absolutely can't live without Remote Play with PS3, automatic updates of DA CFW and can't play a new PSP game becuase the FW is too low, there is no reason to upgrade from 3.71 M33

Ok this is a media related question.
Exactly which format combination (video/audio) will play on PSP? I have ffdshow/avisynth/haali media splitter installed on my computer and configured for my other use therefore most of the automatic psp video converting software does not work on my computer. I also would like more control while making videos for my own stuff. So my question is. Exactly what combination of video/audio requirements before the PSP is finally willign to play my video?
I am just gonna go the 480x272 h264 main profile routine for video. But I don't know exactly what audio is good. AAC is ok? Will be using mp4 wrapper also.
I am going crazy trying to find a combination of format to encode a video that will play on my PSP

THANKS!

ARG lol the encode right after I posted this worked.
480x272 h264 main profile avc level 3.0
2.0 AAC @ 128kbps abr

Oh yeah, forgot to say this here.

I did the mod quite a while ago when I was banned. I had stopped playing my PSP and hated having to change UMD's everytime I wanted to go from Parappa to Lumines 2 so I figured it was worth it just to try.

It worked! :D

Not sure if I got PS1 emulation working yet, mostly because I don't , well rather, can't find, any of my PS1 games :(. Sucks too because I was looking forward to playing THPS1 on it lol. Oh well. Anyone know if EBGames still sells used PS1 games?

Also, i've been really digging Hot Shots Golf: OT ever since I bought it off PSN, are the PS1 versions of Hot Shots as fun?

Yes, and you CAN hack remote play into 3.71 M33-4 (as my phat will attest to), I just would ensure you have a Pandora just in case.

i've been looking for a reason to upgrade, playing PJM on the road is plenty.

Any quick links to the upgrade process?

Is there a map homebrew addon that would allow to me to use something like google maps or something? :D

What are some other good homebrew apps that people have found that aren't related to gaming?

sooo.....I had heard rumblings some time ago that sony was making changes to the slims board so as to keep it from falling prey to pandora, has this happened? Basically I want a GoW red PSP, has anyone here purchased one and put a cfw on it?

Can I create a Pandora battery with a PSP Fat with 3.03 CE?

I want to upgrade to a CFW Slim but I don't have the time to wait for a good price on ebay or finding one here or on CAG because I leave for 6 months abroad pretty soon, so I'm just going to buy a used regular FW Slim and install CFW on it myself.

so I got the new firmware (3.9 m33-3) updated and it froze up a bit upon exiting the Mega Man collection. Is this a known issue or something I should worry about? I had to eject the memory card and reinsert it to get it to play correctly.

Are we allowed to talk about Popstation? I'm trying to rip my copy of Xenogears and am having a major issue...

What's the problem? Yeah, we can talk about it. At least, I'm pretty sure we can.

I do have a GOW red PSP with cfw on it and it runs fine, no problems so far...

So I made a CFW Pandora battery and memory stick with my friend's phat PSP. At least I thought so.

When I put the Pandora battery into my PSP Slim the green light flicks on to indicate that it's getting power, but the PSP won't boot up. Do I have to hold a certain button configuration or is the battery not what it needs to be?

I haven't used my PSP is over a year and I just checked and saw I am running 3.40-OE. Any advice? Where should I start in trying to get this thing up to date?

Yes its true there were some changes to motherboard in small attempt to prevent Pandora usage but its useless IMO.
What they did was prevent you from making your own Pandora Battery by disabling eeprom writing. You can still use a Pandora Battery with no problems though.

upgrade to 3.52 m33
3.52 firmware

then 3.52 m33-4

then 3.90-m33
3.90 firmware

then maybe install the kernel 1.50 addon
I have a really old ass custom firmware (3.03 OE-B, I believe). Does the above also apply to me, or are there extra steps I need to take?

I bought my PSP already "hacked," so I've never actually done this before. Is it worth it?

Am I right in assuming that I can't play commercial games that require higher firmwares?

Yes, they apply to you. Just follow the readme file, download the Sony FW and M33 files. Rename the Sony EBOOT.PBP to 352.PBP and place where instructed on your MS.

Yes its worth it

Also correct.

Okay, I'm confused about the two update files (bolded below):

ALL they contain is EBOOT.PSP

Do I rename those? Do I add them when I'm doing the stuff from the previous 3.52 and 3.90 links, or does this step come after I do those respectively?

Also, I'm guessing the 1.50 stuff doesn't apply to me since that references official 1.50 Sony firmware, which I assume I no longer have because my PSP has been hacked with 3.03 OE-B? Or am I wrong?

Sorry for all the questions. Just skittish about doing this because I've never done it myself before.

I mean what is the safest updates, because I hear some C/F updates mess up your PSP, I just want to make sure what is the safest update as of now.

Been a little while but ya you have to rename the accordingly. For example rename the eboot in the 3.53 to 352.PBP and the 3.90 one to 390.PBP (IIRC). It should be in the readme of the custom firmwares from what I remember what the exact rename is but I think that's right.

The 1.50 stuff applies if you have a fat psp and want certain emulators or other apps that used the 1.50 kernal and therefore can't run on the slim at all and can't run on the newer firmwares when using a fat unless you apply the 1.50 patch. Most things have upgraded to a newer kernal so you don't have to have a fat but some haven't so it depends on what you've been using.

you have to put the psp on hold and then insert the battery (while holding L), then slide it off of hold to power. try that and also try putting your psp on the charger (this is what I do since my pandora battery doesn't charge on my PSP).

I resolved it by finding a different program. PopstationGUI works really well.

The one by Red Squirrel? It's got a butt-ugly GUI, but feature-wise, it is my preferred app.

Definitely. I love being able to set the background, animation, music, and icon when you go to select.

I heard some PSX game won't work unless you switch back to older firmwares or something. Is this true?

What's so great about redsquirrel compared to popsloader? Also, how do you rip the files for the older revisions of popsloader so you can choose from it if you upgrade to a new cfw?

Mejilan

Red Squirrel's app is the one I'd recommend you use to convert your PSOne games. POPS is the only emulator out there that'll actually play the game.

You don't need to change firmwares to expand your PSOne support. Install DA's POPSLoader plugin instead. Properly installed, that will allow you to simultaneously access every supported iteration of POPS, which is just about all of them.

I've got Vagrant Story on the way in the mail, is Red Squirrel what you guys would recommend to play it on the PSP?

That's actually one of the games I ripped. It seemed to work fine although there was some lag in first person view; I haven't played it in so long I'm not sure if it was also like that on the PSX.

I've never played it but I can handle a little lag for the portability.
