PSP Custom Firmware Thread

All POPSLoader does install the different emulator files from the different firmwares and allow you to run them on different firmwares (they are the official POPs).

Different games work differently under different firmware versions (FFVI for example won't load saves on anything other than 3.03). I do know that RE2 had some issues on certain firmwares where it would crash at the police station before the licker attack.

Another thing, the program used to encode the games can also cause some problems. Not every program converts exactly the same. I use PSX2PSP and I've had no problems with it.

After redoing my roms with PSX2PSP all PS1 Resident Evil games (1, 2 and 3) work fine but none of them lets me to save games :(

Does anyone have a clue why can't I save games? When I start the game it creates the virtual memory sticks with the gameId but when when I try save to one of the memory cards nothing happens :(

Has anyone played one of the Resident Evil games on the PSP?

You can get one of these:

I bought that, stopped working 2 weeks later. Avoid.

Sorry, the whole tech talk in the OP is too much for me.

I see myself buying a PSP3000 soon. Currently, there is no way to install custom firmware?

No custom firmware, but there is "homebrew" through the gripshift exploit, but no telling if that'll lead to custom firmware or not.

I just read that even if I buy a PSP 2000 slim there are problems with custom firmware. Is there any way to see if it's possible (serial number or something)?

He was being sarcastic. Past 3.50 (or so) on a PSP-1000, no other exploit was discovered. You need a Pandora.

I think he knows that (or rather, I hope so).

Thanks Mejilan for all the info you keep updated in the OP. It has helped me numerous times.

I'm not too sure. In any event, you're welcome. And thanks to navanman, Faceless Master, Schrade, and anyone else I forgot who keeps on making this thread so awesome for everyone.

PSP-2000s with relatively recent manufacture dates sport a new motherboard that's currently Pandora-proof. Some bundles out there are a crapshoot, and can land you a CFW-ready PSP, or not. Other bundles are completely out of the equation. Your best bet would be to pick up a PSP from a GAFfer or on eBay that already has CFW on it.

There's a new game exploit (Gripshift US/EU/JP) that does allow user mode-level homebrew on all PSPs, including newer 2000s and 3000s, but there's no guarantee that this will lead into a kernel-level exploit needed to install CFW and for many of the more powerful applications out there. User mode-level homebrew requires the use of special homebrew enablers which really only open up a limited range of applications. Basically, rewind the PSP homebrew scene 3 years.

There are always kernel mode exploits "in the works," when one is needed. We'll see if anything materializes.
Personally, I think it's only a matter of time. But then, it's always only a matter of time, really. I'm sure we're closer now than ever, however! :D

yep, I can't wait for it to come out, there so many plugins and homebrew applications you're missing out on ofw :(

It's funny to see old methods being used here since I wasn't around when they used game exploit to downgrade the psp.

I hate to ask, because I feel this may have been answered a million times before, but I can't seem to find the answer... If a PSP-2003 comes with firmware 3.95 installed, what are the chances it is hackable? Or is there a better way to check? Thanks.

Just saw that video, but I don't speak French. Isn't that just the HEN (homebrew enabler) app that Dark-Alex and Miriam have been sniping at each about? HEN is still a far cry from true CFW.

I ordered that photofast. Thanks for the links :D

I hope that Resistance Retribution demo leaks out, I had no idea it even existed until today.

I saw a PSP with 3.40 OE-A firmware. Is that good/easy to upgrade to the newest custom firmware?

Yes its easy to upgrade. Once CFW is installed on it, all the hard work is done already TBH.
AFAIK you need to upgrade to 3.52 M33, then 3.52 M33-4 and then onto 5.00 M33-4.

I was at a similar one for a long time before I went to something recent when a game demanded a change. It's doable, but it will take a few steps, since some of the custom firmware updates require you to upgrade from some earlier minimum. Perusing my PSP homebrew download folder and trying to retrace my steps, I think what you'd need to do (other than using a Pandora battery or something to cut right to the end) is...

Upgrade to 3.52 M33
Upgrade to 3.52 M33-3
Upgrade to 3.90 M33-3

I think at that version it has the capability to upgrade to the latest custom firmware straight from the PSP, as if you were upgrading to the latest legit firmware, so it becomes simpler. Though I and a few others didn't seem to have it properly auto-update from 5.0 M33 to 5.0 M33-4, but all the hyphen upgrades are easy, so it was as simple as downloading a small program to the PSP and running it from there.

EDIT: navanman doesn't mention a stop at 3.90. He may be right; I don't remember what was the current state-of-the-art at the time I had to take several steps in a row.

Thanks everyone. The auction ends tomorrow, I'm still not sure. Usually, I don't buy that kind of stuff on ebay. I like it shiny and new. :)

i have a question to the people who have that dual microsd-memory stick duo adapter:
how do you format it? do you have to put files on it via memory stick (you cant take out the individual microsd or you'll mess up the file structure)

it might be one of the newer psp 2000's with the motherboard that doesn't allow the exploit to work

Easy, you plug it into the PSP and click the "Format Memory Stick".

:D

Put the MicroSD cards in it and leave them there. Treat it as a Memory Stick.

what happens when you take out the microsds and read/write files on it seperately

Can you use the adapter with a single MicroSD? Y'know, if I didn't want to expend all $30 for dual 8gig MSDs right now?

Also where are you guys getting the adapters and micros? eBay?

It won't work. If you format them in the adapter they only work together. You have to reformat them.

Okay question.

I have a PSP-2001 (slim-n-lite) that I bought around it's launch.

I 'just' charged it back up after about 10 months of inactivity and like a dummy updated to the newest firmware.

Then I figured I won't probably ever buy anymore games for it since none are on the horizon that interest me...except maybe Resistance, BUT...is it possible to hack it?

And if so, what would be the procedure?

Do I need a battery from another PSP? I've searched online, but every tutorial has different steps. It's all so confusing.

I'm trying to put the Resistance demo onto my PSP, but I have no clue what to do with it. I downloaded a .cso file. Where do I put that?

Am I allowed to talk about this stuff here?

I installed CFW on my red GoW PSP (and returned my CFW-enabled launch PSP to official firmware) and now whenever I play a game (off the mem stick) and then try to shut down the PSP by holding down on the off switch, the drive goes crazy for 10 seconds, with the lens moving around and causing a lot of noise. After happening twice, I haven't touched the system since. Could that be caused by the CFW (never happened with my PSP-1000)? I have 5.00 M33-4 installed.

Dark Alex has pushed out 5.00M33-6 after a brief fault with M33-5 earlier today. Grab it here: http://www.dark-alex.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=8158 or over network update, release notes:

5.00 M33-6
----------

This update is a try to fix memory stick low speed since 3.80.

Instructions: Copy UPDATE folder /PSP/GAME/ and run.

If you come from a version prior to 5.00 M33, put sony update as 500.PBP in same folder, or let the program download it for you using a wifi connection.

Changes in 5.00 M33-5:

- A setting has been added to recovery, that, when enabled it may increase memory stick reading speed. (only on the psp, not in the pc).
By default it is disabled. If you installed 3.71 fatmsmod, do not use this setting, as its perfomance with 3.71 driver has not been tested.
Instead, reinstall 5.00 m33-4 using dc8 and update to 5.00 m33-5

Changes in 5.00 M33-6:

- Fixed a bug that made unbootable psp without memory stick or with a bad one.

The included file fat_comparison.html contains a comparison of perfomance between the 5.00 fat driver, the 3.71 one, and the 5.00 one with the speed up hack during the read of an iso.
The test was done on the game Valkyrie Profile in cso format in march33 mode. Other games, modes and applications different than iso reading showed similar results.

Interesting! Will upgrade to 5.00 M33-6 tonight, after work!
I do have the 3.71 fatmsmod patch installed, so I'm not sure that I'll be testing this new feature at all, however.

I recklessly ignored all the advice and tested it with the fatmsmod patch installed and it seems to work perfectly, Loco Roco 2 load times are down considerably and it feels a bit nippier on the Game menu but it goes without saying that you should do it at your own risk.

Woops, bricked my PSP doing something completely unrelated. Damnit, this'll take longer than it should.

Has anyone else tested the 5.00 M33-6 memory stick speedhack with the 3.71 fatmsmod patch installed?

I resurrected my bricked PSP last night, but since I'm on a totally clean installation of 5.00 M33-6, I no longer have the fatmsmod patch installed. Just wanted to know if there was any point in installing it...

sort of related i guess. i didn't want to start a new thread. but does anyone know what the new PSP firmware (not custom) released does? it made me update last night.

I tested it last night. I already had the 3.71 fatmsmod patch installed on my fat PSP and I also set the new 5.00 M33-6 speed option on "always".

I didn't encounter any problems so far. It runs as smooth as ever but only a lot faster now.:D

Hmm i have fatsmod installed on 5.00 M33-4. I'll try the update with fastmod patch and see what happens.
I'll make a Pandora before hand incase bad stuff happens :(

For now. The 3000 will fall before long.

Actually, had you paid any attention to what I wrote, you'd note that I'm asking specifically about the combination of fatmsmod patch AND 5.00 speed hack. Dark-Alex specifically compared to the two against each other and did not factor the two together, which he says he did not test.

I'd bet on it doing absolutely nothing other than stopping the GripShift exploit.
