PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Running off of Custom Firmware
The only "feature" admitted by Sony is a security update, so you can bet that the only real addition was a fix to the Gripshift exploit.

I've been incredibly busy lately which is why these two guides took awhile. But right now I'm sick in bed with the flu so I have nothing better to do...

The All-Singing, All-Dancing OSX Guide to Creating PSP EBOOTS of Your Favourite PSX games!

So you have a Mac and you have no idea how to rip your own PSX discs into PSP Eboots? This guide is for you. Please Note: Prometeus Pro was abandonware long before multi-disc support was created for PSP. As such you'll only be able to rip single discs. For the most part this is fine, as long as the game in question has you save before changing discs. Otherwise you'll have to take your PSX games to a Windows machine and follow Mejilan's guide, or boot up your save on a PSX emulator, get to disc 2 there and then save and transfer it back to your PSP.

1. Download Prometeus Pro. This programme will allow you to do a variety of things (mostly obsolete now) and is unfortunately abandonware. Fortunately, it still does an excellent job of ripping PSX games and customising them as you would like. However before you install the application, you’ll need to do something else.

2. Download and install libusb first. (Tiger Leopard).

3. Drag and drop Prometeus_Pro.app into your applications folder.

4. Open Prometeus Pro. Since this is abandonware, ignore the warning at the beginning saying this is a demo version only. Please Note: As this is abandonware, the programme will crash occasionally. This sucks but we just have to deal with it.

5. Click on the PSX -> PSP tab

6. Insert the PSX disc of your choice and hit the “rip” button. The programme will ask you where you’d like to save the .toc and .bin it will create. Create a folder wherever you like. Then name the file whatever you like and hit “Save”. The red button on the PSP will start blinking on Prometeus Pro. When it finishes it will ding.

When the button has stopped flashing, we can move onto the next step which is creating the PSP Eboot. I suggest that you look here for some awesome fan made Image Packs for your game, as the Prometeus Pro default is HIDEOS.

7a. The programme will look for the Game ID (GIDN now). If the programme doesn't crash head to step 8.

7b. This step only is required if the programme crashes: Eject your PSX disc and then hit the “open” button and find the .bin file you just ripped. Prometeus Pro will then attempt to figure out the Game ID (GIDN) on its own for you. If this doesn’t work you’ll have to look it up and enter it manually.

8. Proceed to insert your own images for Icon File (must be 144 x 80 pixels), Icon Animation (must be a .ptf file), Background (must be 480 x 272 pixels), Game Title (must be 310 x 180 pixels) and Sound (must be an .at3 file). You’ll also get a preview of what the screen is going to look like (unfortunately the programme doesn’t let you preview movie animations or sound).

9. Hit the “Save” button and choose where you’d like the PSP EBOOT to be saved to by selecting the folder and hitting the “Open” button.

10. You can play around with the compression at the bottom of the screen (0 is no compression and 9 is the highest) but beware that certain games like Persona 2 Eternal Punishment will only run with NO compression. (However I believe this is essentially the only game with that problem.) Be sure to UNCHECK the “Pal -> NTSC” button.

11. Hit the “Start” button and the red light will begin blinking again on the programme’s PSP picture. When Prometeus Pro has completed the file, it will sound its little bell again. You can check and make sure there is both a KEYS.BIN and an EBOOT.PBP in the folder.

12. Simply drag and drop your newly minted PSP EBOOT folder (not the EBOOT file, the entire folder!) to MS0:/PSP/GAME and enjoy!

The All-Singing, All-Dancing OSX Guide to Ripping Your UMDs!

So you have a Mac and a CFW PSP and don’t know how to rip UMDs? Well fortunately I can help.

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the built-in UMD ripper that Dark_Alex wrote is an “unreadable volume” on the Mac. This means we need to use a different programme. Originally you’d have to have a fat psp (ie one capable of running 1.5 homebrew) and use it in conjunction with Prometeus Pro. Fortunately this is no longer the case. We now can use this neat little programme UMDumper. Simply download this app and place it into your PSP under MS0:\PSP\GAME\UMDUMPER\

This programme rips directly to your memory stick and is kind enough to tell you how large the iso will be and how much room is left on your stick. Be sure to have enough room available!

Please note: UMDumper only works for UMD games. UMD movies will not work.

1. Insert UMD and run the UMDumper programme. The programme will recognise the UMD and give it a name. If you're happy with this name skip to step 3.

2. Optional: Press right on the Dpad to highlight “Rename target file” and press X to rename the iso as you wish.

3. Optional: Press right on the Dpad again until you see “ISO Mode”. If you wish, you may select anything from CSO1 to CSO9 for compression. (Personally I don’t bother as they tend to give you load times on the memstick for little in space saving.) If you don't want to mess with this skip to step 4.

4. Press right on the Dpad until you see “Normal Speed (222Mhz)”. Press the X button to set it to “High Speed (333mhz)”.

5. Press right on the Dpad until you see the “Start Dumping” option. Press X to begin dumping. There’s even a handy status bar at the bottom of the screen telling you how far the programme has gotten in dumping the game.

6. You can even play a mini-game while you wait by pressing the SELECT button!

7. The game will be located under MS0:/ISO/ where you’ll be able to transfer it to your Mac via the usual PSP USB option if you wish.

I'm asking specifically about the combination of fatmsmod patch AND 5.00 speed hack. Dark-Alex specifically compared to the two against each other and did not factor the two together, which he says he did not test.

I installed 5.00 M33-6 and enabled the speed hack with 3.71 fastmod installed. Seems to be working fine, no corruption of ISO or game saves.

I may re-flash my PSP anyway just to be safe.

Great guides Dragona.

I ordered the battery from dealextreme on december 15, 2008. Didn't ship out until January 8th. :lol but man my brother is so stupid. Since the mail man couldn't deliver the package they left the pink slip in the mailbox and while i just happened to be in my brother's room today I noticed it! It had a date to pick it up at Jan. 19th! 2 days ago! and I can't tell how long they'll hold the item for! Going there right now i'd be pissed if they sent it back to them!! gah! so annoying.

EDIT: Woot. they still had it in the mail station. Time to run CFW. :D

Thanks so much, Dragona, that's a great guide for anyone who needs to know how to do this stuff. I'm glad PrometeusPro is abandonware now; I think I paid about $5 for the program toward the end of its lifecycle.

An addendum to your PrometeusPro guide: If you don't stick a title.png in there, you get the crappy looking example one shown onscreen (and I believe the same goes for any other missing components except for animation.ptf and sound.at3). I've generally kept a transparent 1x1 PNG file on hand for these occasions.

Also, there's no way to do multidisc eboots with PrometeusPro, at least not that I am aware of.

Yeah I mentioned that. The default is HIDEOS.

Oops. I know about that but I forgot to put that in. I'll add it now.

I have a psp 2000 and the TOOL battery. and i tried to follow the Instructions from the OP.

Was wondering why i get a Open error (read)/write error when it gets to the MSPformat step?

Do you have Vista? You should try UPMT

The pandora memory stick.. was that the mem stick that came with the battery and did it have files on there and was I suppose to not delete it? if so then SHIT!

EDIT: Nevermind. The upmt program didn't want to work for some reason still. so I ended up doing it on my XP Laptop and it's working just fine now.

EDIT: WHOOT! RUNNING ON CFW now! :D

It'd be great if someone would take over Prometeus Pro, or make an entirely new programme for us Mac users. Prometeus Pro is amazing for when it was coded, is really a beta and the fact it's free but, I'd love to have a programme that doesn't crash 5/10 times when moving from the ripping mode to converting mode.

Well, looks like I'm stuck on loading the MMS when interesting my Tool battery right now. :/

Anyways, PSP is running on 3.95 official firmware it came with, GoW bundle.

Made the catb50 MMS on Windows XP, following the guide on here.. in fact, I've done it half a dozen times now figuring I screwed something up. :lol

Put in the Tool battery, and the green power light comes on, but the display remains blank. I've seen a number of people on different forms with a similar issue. It looks like some of them were able to continue with a 'blind install', and a few more were able to hold L while inserting the battery.

No such luck for me. My best guess is something (either the installer, or myself) has not be put onto the MMS as it should be. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Not a CFW question per se but I have an original PSP slim that after fully charging is only good 4 30 minutes or so of play time. I'm guessing the battery is frelled so can anyone recommend me a good battery to replace it with? Obviously looking for something that would also allow me to use CFW. So any personal recommendations?

You more than likely have a Panora proof PSP I'm afraid although I thought nearly all GOW bundles were moddable with Pandora MMS.

You could try another MMS program called UPMT for PC or PSP Pandora Deluxe.

Thanks, I'll give the other MMS programs a try. I do have a couple backup methods.. ie, my friends pandora and MMS that has worked for them.. and a couple PSPs at my inlaws I can toy around with. Thanks for the help.

Have a quick question.
Is my PSP model number 2001/firmware 3.95 Slim PSP able to be modified or should I not even attempt custom firmware modification? Basically I just wanna know if the 2001 model I have can be modified?

Thanks in advance.

Some can, some can't. You'll need a pandora battery regardless, I'm not sure if there's a way to tell if your 2000 is a modifiable one or not. I have a blue madden one that worked fine, but then I've heard that some weren't able to be hacked. What bundle/color do you have?

The last digit is just for region purposes. It's a 2000. But if it's new, then you can't change it. It depends on the board.

Its the Jack and Dexter bundle,PSP is the slim black model line. I've used the Pandora battery for my brother in law, I just need to refresh myself on going about those steps in using the battery again. I'll read the how to guide here at Gaf over, just needed some clarification on whether the PSP I have is capable of being modified.

More importantly though, if the PSP rejects modification will it some how brick my handheld?
That's what I'm worried about really. I mean I'm perfectly able to mod a PSP
(I've done a slim and a fat before) but I've been out of the scene for about a year and am abit fearful of of modding.

Well if this bit of news helps it was bought about 6 months ago I believe. Firmware has never been updated,so its the one out of the box when he bought it new. 3.95

I'm willing to go ahead and try the pandora battery trick, just as long as there this won't brick a PSP should the handheld reject modification.

Wow. I am so out of the loop for custom firmware. I just checked and I still have 3.52 M33-4. I should really update my firmware. 1000s can still get the latest stuff right?

It won't brick the PSP. At the worst it simply won't work and replacing your original battery will return it to normal.

Apartheid is, in fact, not institutional racism
I have a problem with a Pandora battery i got from dealextreme.

When placed in my psp it doesn't recognize that i have a battery. The light changes to orange, which usually tells me it charging but when i go to battery info it only says external power source and doesn't tell me the charge or if it even charged at all....

Any help?

Whoa, I had seen this plug-in early on when it was a VSH-type menu it didn't look too great but it really shaped up:
Game Categories Revised
screen1.png

Multiple PSP memory stick icons, so you can sort between categories at your choosing.

Here's their site:
http://bubbletune.x-fusion.co.uk/

V3 is the current version of the plug-in at the moment, it's in beta right now. Two fixes came out just today.

It has some problems recognizing folder names if they're too long..

Bubbletune said:
As stated in the readme, Sony code has length limitations. Try lowering the length of the filename and it should work. All this mess should be resolved in version 4 (or a later version if version 4 will be another bugfix), as I'll completely redo the categorizing system.

is it okay to use popstation to rip all my psx games into eboots? Does it work with every type of game? 1,2,3,4 disc games, including the games that need to save before going into disc 2 (aka MGS)?

Yep, I found out about this a day or two ago and was going to post about it, but since no one really jumped on the older version when I introduced that a month or two back, I didn't really bother. Always glad to see another enjoying something as cool as this, though. This revised edition definitely fixes just about every issue I ever had with these kinds of plugins.

One still remains. Using this breaks compatibility with XMB icon sorting apps. *sighs*

i saw potential in it, but the previous edition sucked
the new mode is exactly what i wanted, and it is now implemented
anyone know how to get rid of the 'uncategorized' i'd like it to say games or something

Which view are you in? I don't have an Uncategorized category on mine. Either way, I don't think you can change that one, only suppress it, at best.. If you want a Games category, make one!

I'm using the following categories in Multi-MS mode:
CAT_PSP Games
CAT_PSOne Games
CAT_Homebrew Games
CAT_Emulators
CAT_Applications

Glad I'm a dual-booter (Mac + Win Vista).

Still, ripping UMDs sounds like a long, long task, especially given that the ripped data has to be streamed via USB. How long does it take?

It takes little to no time at all.

Hit Select and change the USB device to UMD

After that its a basic drag and drop.

It takes no time at all.

I just installed the new version of Game Categories. It's a nice improvement. This is what I was hoping the last version would be when it was first posted.

I've been told many times that will brick the PSP.

Well, it can still take a few minutes to transfer a few hundred or thousand megabytes, but it's dead simple, yeah.

I'm running the newest OFW on a 2000. I'm thinking of switching to CFW for some retro gaming. Will I be able to get my legit PSN downloads back once I switch over since CFW is only at 5.00? Currently loving SSHD Portable, so I'd rather not give that up.

Thanks in advance!

I would think that it works fine, since I think those things are tied to your account and the PSN store itself works under custom firmware. Can't confirm that, though.

I know that you can't get onto PSN unless your firmware is completely up to date, so that's why I was wondering about CFW being 5.00. I believe OFW is 5.03 now. Does CFW somehow bypass the update requirement?
