Welp, back to Sony my unit goes -- let's hope they have a screen replacement dealie. Have they ever come out and said what number of dead pixels is acceptable?

"You need help."

... why?

If people love Sony, they'd want them to get better, not bury their heads when there is an obvious issue (it's probably more to do with Sharp than anything given the screens seem to be where the issues is). Just ignoring any problems or issues doesn't make you a bigger sony fan, it makes you an arsewipe.

* you != you, i mean, any fan.

Thanks for your contribution to this thread, asshole.

Okay, can we get a full list of anyone who has a unit and what defects they have or if they are perfect or not?

Known issues are :

1. Dead Pixels
2. Broken control stick
3. Broken / stuck buttons
4. Non-closing drive door
5. Ejection disk of death

I've got one dead pixel. My brother's PSP has two dead pixels and his analog stick broke off.

i got:

- 2 dead pixels (only visible with a dark screen).
- a little dust at the bottom of the screen (only visible with a dark screen).
- and sometimes the Dpad makes a squeeking sound.

Broken LCD screen. :(

Of course, that was due to a physical hit to the unit. Alas....

Still, before that I really had *no* problems.

How the hell did that happen? Can you put it back on after it "breaks"?

"You already got burned on the PSX. Why are you still buying first-production-run Sony hardware?"

hardware whore, i can't help myself.

I got some dust towards the bottom edge of the screen. Only bothers me when it's a black and backlit screen.

perfect, and thats the original one I got for my b-day.

Bought 2 more, another perfect one went to my cousin, the one I sold on ebay had a little dust, that was it.

All mine came from the same electronics store, yamada denki.

He says it just fell off at some point and he doesnt know where the analog stick went. The good thing is that the d-pad is preferable in most games so far..

I have (or perhaps HAD?) a slight problem with my square button sticking when I first got the system. However, after all the use the system has seen, this is no longer happening and the unit seems perfect now. I didn't get any dead pixels on the screen so I count myself as lucky anyway.

Since I should have Shin Sangoku Musou tomorrow, I'll definitely find out if there's still any sticking issues with the square button, but I guess you can put me down under "perfect" for now.

The unit I got at launch had a stuck pixel that can only be seen with the red coloured BG as well as a 'constellation' of stuck pixels(usually whitish) when it is displaying a black BG(when loading etc). 2 weeks of use later, the screen developed a dark spot(looks like a burn-in) less than 1 cm in diameter. Close examination of the spot revealed a cluster(15) of stuck pixels - which are most visible with a blue/purple BG.

Sent it to the PS Clinic in Kisaragi for repairs on the 24th and got it back on the 29th. The replacement screen have two stuck pixels but are visible only with a black BG... Its an improvement I guess. They also got rid of 2 fibres/scratches under the cover of my unit however the D-Pad is as squeaky as ever and the shoulder buttons seems to stick alot especially with extensive playtime on Lumines.

You guys broke the "do not buy sony consoles on launch" rule. You deserve what you get.

Now seriously damn you guys couldn't you wait a few of months?

Cause everyone in this thread is all up in arms that their PSP isn't perfect. I'm pretty sure we all knew what we were getting into.

whats the ejection disk of doom thing?
Hold the system a certain way and the umd pops out like toast. But you really have to massage the unit from what I've seen.

... erm.... why should we , grandad?

Yikes. I'm glad I held off on importing one.

I almost broke down and ordered one a few times, but it probably is best to wait. I hope these issues aren't as widespread with the NA release...

I hoped the same thing for PS2, I even waited for the second model... it still had issues. I'd swear Sony makes their shit so it can break.

But, hooray, 80 million units "sold!"

Yep, either you're lucky and you get good Sony hardware or you don't. I'ver prosonally never had an issue with their systems *knocks on wood*

I'll be buying a PSP at launch (w/ a extended warranty just in case :P).

All hardware has issues, especially at launch. The GBA SP had dust issues in the beginning; the Japanese XBox was scratching discs; hell, how many of you consider XBoxes with Thompson drives to be anathema? I consider the fact that you have to power cycle the DS after going into any of the sub-menus an "issue" as well. Nintendo shouldn't have let it out of the gates with such a glaring flaw in the UI. Or, if they just couldn't - at all - fix it before launch, there should be some kind of fix that you can download. Hey, remember when Sega managed to accidentally let a few dud game discs out with the Dreamcast launch. Oops.

Sony tends to stand out because with 80 million PS2s out there, there are going to be inevitable lemons. Even a low percentage of bad PS2s will probably be a surprisingly high number, but that's because of sheer volume. It's not something they can get around easily, it's not as if they're aiming for as much press as possible about how their hardware stinks. Personally, I don't think dead pixel issues should even fall on the "Sony QA sucks!" bandwagon, simply because it's a fact of the technology. It's something that Sony and Sharp will have to work to minimize. It won't go away, though. Not with the PSP, DS, SP, or even the Gizmondo.

thanks for outting me on the billion dead pixels. I am going to look into having it repaired after the mizuguchi interview.

No good can come of this, please lock.

:lol

I'm sure you said the same thing about people complaining about dead pixels on their DSes (which Nintendo was replacing FOR FREE, by the way, while Sony isn't even repairing them)

The US launch should have most or all of these issues resolved, right? Not that any one of us would know for sure, but considering that they're developing the same hardware...

:lol @ sonycowboy telling DCharlie that he needs help
