ugh. Doom 3 engine already showing its age? yes.

Doom 3 showed its age when Doom 3 was release (and HL2 engine is no better)

And the art direction for Quake 4 is awful...it's straight out of a 12 years old boy techno-satanic-shit deviantart webpage

Id's not making this game ...

and "the rest of the team" is pretty much just Carmack + level designers :lol

What exactly was more impressive at the time? I'd like to know...

At the very least, I was pleased that a PC developer actually realized that animation means something. It looks very impressive in motion.

Animation was good but there is something "off" in the doom3 engine i don't know what it is + the shadow (after all the hype) weren't mind-boggling

But i know you liked Doom3 dark10x so I'm no gonna argue with you. I didn't really enjoy Doom3 after the initial part. So it's probably why i'm bitter.

Regardless of what you thought of the game, there really wasn't anything technically beyond Doom 3 available at the time of its release. The engine was doing more than anything else at the time while also performing very well. That's really important. I'm sure they could have pushed the technology envelope a bit more, but PC developers have to strike a balance between high-end technology and performance.

PDZ looks better.
Comments like that really paint the 360 in a poor light...

WHICH SHITTY LOOKING GAME LOOKS BETTER!!!111

I'm still curious about TeS - Oblivion. I wonder if the E3 trailer was accurate? It was running at a rock solid 60 fps and displaying CONSIDERABLY more detail than either PDZ or Q4 while also handling a much larger and complex game world. Everything seemed to be displaying proper shadows as well. It just appeared far too impressive for BethSoft, which makes me raise this question...

?

there are some parts of the game where the shadows are mind boggling. For example: shortly after the fight with the spider boss, I forget the level name, you're giong through a dark tunnel with a security drone leading you, and the lights + realistic shadows it casts on every surface with the imps running around is amazing. I haven't seen anything near that yet. If the engine has a fault, it's that it is simply built for corridor shooters, which admittedly gets very boring after a short period of time.

Basically what I was thinking.

Technically more than sound, but I still think its fucking horrible.
I'm sick of this space marine shit.

Have you taken a look at the E3 "Quake Wars" trailer (the direct feed 60 fps version)? That's some impressive usage of the technology...

This is bad. Like Liefeld bad.

Have you seen the trailer? It looks like if they were trying to kill the Quake franchise with just one game. Not that I was expecting something great from Raven, though.

Let's face it I hate the Doom3 engine. Far Cry was a better engine,a better game and was released before Doom3 with a lot less hype.

You guys do realize Doom 3 is a freaking Direct X 8 engine right?

it's not a directX product, it's an OpenGL one.

Furthermore, Carmack rewrote the entire lighting engine for it so that it would run faster. It's technically a very robust engine for what it was designed for (and the focus clearly was on interior lighting).

Well, you know how I feel about Far Cry... :D

It's like a siren song. You see those beautiful, inviting landscapes before you. The game beckons you to sample its fruits. 10 minutes later you realize that you've just encountered the worst combat system the genre has seen in years. The gameplay is attrocious, the scenario designs are as sloppy as could be, and the game just isn't actually "fun". Ever. They should have refrained from letting 8 years old handle the animation as well. :P

/rant off

It is the only graphics engine that I believe could be used in this argument, though. I'd place it about on the same level as Doom 3's, as they each have their own qualities.

Truest statement in the thread.

It doesn't matter if Quake 4 has the best animation and tech ever, art this bad is not worth anyone's time. These screens are laughable. We as consumers need to start BANNING certain devs from ever making FPS's again.

Wow. I know we're all sick of "bad art" but holy crap that's some of the worst design I've ever seen, anywhere. Raven should be ashamed.

There are only two words needed to describe the way this game looks:

Fuckin' stupid.

I missed this one...

Dude, you admitted that you enjoyed Far Cry. Come on now... :D

The monster in FarCry were pretty bad...HAPPY :p

And i was speaking about Quake4 here. I can live with good techno-satanic-shit but quake 4 epitomize BAD techno-satanic-shit

Ha ha, I don't disagree on either point. They both represent the kind of art direction that needs to disappear...

What the hell, even FarCry had monsters?! I thought it was supposed to be a military-esque shooter... Is it some kind of unwritten rule for western developers that if you make a FPS, you have to include 'teh monstorz'?

Damn it I hate 95% of all FPS's... >_<
