Rate the big summer shows (SOP, SGF, Xbox)

SOP: A-
SGF: C-
Xbox: B
John Candy Reaction GIF

SOP, 1.5/10 - Trash. Marvel Tokon

SGF, -3/10 - Shovelware shill show complete with pro-"indie" propaganda. 2 hours of completely wasted time.

Xbox Showcase, 4.5/10. Ending on COD as the "one more thing" is crazy.

The big thread connecting all of these shows is just how many games look generic and tired. Soulslop, anime and low rent Honkai Rail overload, garbage looking slice of life indies. AAAs are either nowhere to be found or are showing up with bullshit that doesn't make the cut.

Horrendous summer season.

"Gaming has never been better"!!! So far it's been extremely mid. Xbox show was disappointing. Sony was OK. SGF was crap minus Resi 9 reveal. Fuck gaming today is so disappointing. So generic. I am only waiting for Donkey Kong, Metroid Prime 4, Tony Hawk 3 and 4, that new Terminator 2 side scroller, Shinobi side scroller and Mortal Kombat compilation. The rest is generic slop. And a "new" Xbox? Basically just a handheld windows PC! How fucking good of them. Can I play the over 700 games I have purchased on my Series X on this thing or are you just fucking over console users? Fuck Xbox today. Shell of who they once were. Day 1 gamepass. Cloud gaming. World premier. FUCK YOU Xbox.

Mediocre all around.
Yeah, I don't know how some people can give such different ratings (like 2 for one event and 8 for another), it's not like any event was much better than the other.

Anyway, I was interested in about half a dozen games at each event, but the ones I really thought were must-buys were only 1 or 2 per event at most.

State of Play was genuinely good, short with a steady supply of interesting games for me, and probably the single biggest announcement of the entire not-E3 season (Marvel Tokon, that thing was talked about for DAYS afterwards). 8/10.

SGF was almost a total disaster, glad I wasn't able to stay on for the whole livestream and then I couldn't even muster up the care to look up the trailers that came after I left the liveshow. 2/10

Xbox's was the most uneven I'd say, genuinely strong start, very uninteresting middle (please let the GAAS games get their own show, I don't give a shit about FO76 or Sea of Thieves), and an utterly baffling final drop. 6/10 because what I liked there I REALLY liked, shame about the weird choices that spoiled what was gonna be a GOAT showcase.

As a Switch 2 owner, i can't believe how many games i can look forward to from this week's announcements. Sonic racing and Final Fantasy Tactics. Two announced games in 1 whole week is pretty impressive right? :messenger_winking:

Sticking with letter grades, since that's what the individual rating threads used:

State of Play: B+
Xbox Presentation: B
Summer Games Fest: E

It was a really close year between Sony and Microsoft, honestly. Both had competent, watchable shows with plenty of variety and multiple games that I'm interested in playing. Sony gets the edge just because I'm more hyped for Lumines Arise and Romeo is a Deadman than anything in the Xbox show, though Keeper comes close. Xbox also had a bit more filler.

Summer Games Fest was an enverating and demoralizing experience that filled me with hate and despair and it only escapes an F because the Resident Evil misdirection was so well executed.

SoP and Xbox both get a C from me, though Xbox gets a little boost for showing off hardware, which is always fun to talk about. SGF was a drag and I found myself being easily distracted from the show.

I pretty much hated everything except FFTactics and Ninja Gaiden 4.
Glad I have my retro gaming setup from NES to PS2 fully up and running.

This was one of the better state of plays, but they usually aren't very good.

SOP - solid B. Big update on a first party game would have been nice, like Wolverine or SSM.

SGF was filled with a shit load of western and Chinese slop, just the most C tier shit imaginable. I sort of expected this after Geoff blew the roof off of TGAs last year, but damn this was bad. RE9 and Stranger of Paradise were the only big games for me.

Xbox was filled, again, with generic western slop and gamepass filler trash. Even persona 4 didn't look good. Xbox's biggest miss for me was not addressing a shitload of already announced games.

Contraband
Fable
State of Decay
Perfect Dark
OD
Everwild

All missing in action. Some of these have been kicking around for more than half a decade. Then they ended on CALL OF DUTY?! Are you kidding me? That's a yearly annualized game. You might as well end on announcing the new Madden.

  • SOP - 6/10
    • Pragmata for all the wait.. not much of a show. Romeo is dead looks fun. Nioh 3 I guess (trailer quite bad montage). Silent hill f trailer was downgrade compared to previous one. Rest was very mid
  • SGF - 7/10 if you remove the fat, 5/10 if not, I was frustrated watching it.
    • Onimusha, Stranger than Heaven, Atomic heart 2, Ill, RE9, Chronicles of Medieval, End of Abyss, Felt that, Blighted, all good. Dragged down by a shitload of crap
  • Xbox - 8/10
    • Clockwork revolution, Outer worlds 2, grounded 2, Chronos, Keeper. InXile, Double Fine & Obsidian double hitter. Fully my cup of tea. Add Ninja Gaiden 4 which looks legit (still on my guard..)

Sony - B+
SGF - Didn't watch but RE9 was there
Microsoft - C

I dunno but as a Japanese gaming fan who vastly preferred the PS1/PS2 generation over PS360, Sony resonated it for me. I mean: Silent Hill, FFT, MGS, Nioh, Suda51 game, Bloodstained, Pragmata, Marvel ArcSystemWorks

Microsoft felt like the PS360 that I was meh about. Hey P4R was cool but it's barely anything.

Summary basically: if you like the Japanese stuff, Sony would resonate with you. If you're into the Western stuff, Microsoft would resonate with you.

Honestly, the shows are kinda shit nowadays. But, there are a lot of games that I'm interested in that were shown (some already announced, but we got release dates for some).

Cronos
Shinobi: Art of Vengeance
Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound (and 4)
RE9 Requiem
Clockwork
Silent Hillf
Atomic Heart II

Lots to look forward to for me. The shows are meh, but at least there are some decent games in the pile (hopefully).

State of Play:
1 / 10
Mortal Kombat Kollektion

SGF:
0 / 10
Didn't watch it, but the host of the show is unbearable. When he is involved, it can't be good.

Xbox showcase:
7 / 10
Xbox handheld
Gears of War
Final Fantasy 16
Final Fantasy 7
Grounded 2

SoP: C.
Nothing too exciting for me outside of Nioh 3, but overall fairly brief and with a couple of games that at least look worth keeping an eye on

SGF: D.
There was like 30 minutes of stuff that was about on par with the SoP and Xbox event , except you also had to sit through an additional 90 minutes of boring filler which made it an awful event to watch.

XboX: C.
On par with the SoP IMO, some cool trailers and a couple of decent announcements, but nothing particularly exciting.

SOP: Bond Jr. For The Modern Audience trailer & Nioh 3 PS5 exclusive demo & Mortal Kombat Legacy Collection announcement - C

SGF: Stranger Than Heaver jaw-drop trailer & Lies of P: Overture shadow drop & Atomic Heart 2 blockbuster trailer & ILL shock trailer & Resident Evil Requiem kino trailer - A

XGS: Tony Hawk 3+4 pre-order demo & Ninja Dog Gaiden Sigma 4 trailer & Persona 4: Revival nothingburger teaser - F
