RE4 PS2 Screenshots (56k away)

I already own the GC version which I haven't touched...And the more I read this thread the more I want to beat it on PS2.

Some of you are acting like if the game looked HORRIBLE.

1. It hasn't been finished.
2. It looks decent.

That's a fact.

I'm glad you settle for decent.

Haha, this is actually pretty funny considering fugliness won't stop the N-bots buying the new Zelda.

Zelda is now considered ugly? Wow, i think im better off in FFXI than this forum sometimes o_o

The PS2 version does not look nearly as good as I thought it would. I was thinking that it was going to look similar to Haunting Ground but it looks noticably worse.

about what i expected....folks get the damn gamecube version!
That would involve buying a Gamecube... that ain't high on many peoples' list of priorities last I checked, regardless how cheap they are.

Much easier to deal with the graphic downgrade, save some money and not buy a new console for one game and get a bunch of extras and goodies.

Besides, the large majority of gamers who buy this won't care or even know about the Gamecube version when they're playing this. It's only really the avid fans - the types who visit gaming forums on the Internet - who'll notice/give a damn.

Goddamn the whining here is ridiculous at times. Yes, the GC version looks better (and yes, like most of you I have played it and beaten it) but for a PS2 game this looks damn good, and people have got to remember than Capcom are still working on it.

Plus, keep in mind this should be a well-deserved hit for them. I don't know about the rest of you, but I definitely want to see a Resident Evil 5 at one point, and nothing anyone says can change the fact the Cube sales weren't up to scratch.
why are you taking it so personal?

actually, it is. can't figure out why anyone thinks it looks anything other than average, at best.

Eh, I'm pleasantly surprised at this port. A GC=>PS2 port isn't an easy thing to do, especially for a game with as intricate an environment as RE4.

OTOH, if Killer 7, which is fairly simplistic by comparison, is suffering bad slowdown in the PS2 version, how will this hold up?

looks okay. If the game sells (and it should/must) then all the power to Capcom. Guys we want a sequel.. so don't hate on the game.

That's all.

Huh? I just think that there are games far more deserving of this sort of bitching. Judging by the screenshots, Capcom have done a great job with this port (of course, in motion it may be a completely different story, but we'll see) and a small graphical hit doesn't change the fact that Resident Evil 4 is a mindblowingly wonderful game.

On another note, I'm willing to bet the colours won't be as washed out in the final version. It looks more like a byproduct of the screenshot process.

oh... oh man.

thats ugly

why did you bother capcom?

i mean... it looks really horrible.... almost on the level of first / second gen ps2 titles.

and that ogre shot almost look n64 ish.

Looks "meh" from the screenshots. Hopefully it'll look better in video form. I wonder what the framerate and loading times are like...

So when will this be released? I promised i wouldn't try another RE game after CV but this one got high praise... like CV actually >.>

Edit: Forums loading slow

I think you guys are blowing this way out of proportion AGAIN.... It is obvious they haven't implemented the lighting model, which if you remember, was something missing from most of the early Cube shots. Also it is obvious that Capcom is releasing more of their normal hideous captures. Anyone remember what some of the screens from the different DMC games looked like? They looked terrible, but the game itself wasn't bad. That said the port seems to be decent.

Meh, 'bout what I expected. Capcom flat out sucks at making good use of the PS2. DMC hasn never really made a worthwhile jump in quality from the original, Onimusha relied on prerendered backgrounds to be impressive, etc.. They clearly just aren't very good at it, plus RE4 was designed for a texture heavy system while the PS2 is all about fast computations. Its like putting a square peg in a round hole, of course it'll look like shit after you whittle off enough to make it fit.

Fuck you haters! this bitch is mine!!! Yea it doesn't look so good but don't judge it till you see it in action... or the final product.

PORT GET +1

Doesn't look too bad.

People complaining about the image quality have clearly forgotten about the GC version. The GC version already had awful image quality (both in shots and in the final product), so I don't know how you expected the PS2 (which typically features inferior image quality) to best the GC in that regard.

That cave troll shot that people are complaining about can't be compared to El Gigante from earlier in the game either, as those models are DIFFERENT.

This looks very similar, but obviously has downgrades in the areas we have expected. The textures aren't as crisp (though they were often blurry on GC as well), the models aren't quite as detailed (RE4 GC did feature some of the highest resolution characters around, though, considering the number of them on the screen), and the lighting has been scaled back (no reason why they can't fix this). The image quality does not seem too terribly different and it should not be all that much jaggier (it was already jaggy on GC -AND- this won't run in field rendered mode like a lot of Capcom titles).

Let's wait until we see it in motion before judging. A lot of what made RE4 look so impressive was directly related to its animation.

Correction dark, it doesn't look bad in some areas it's true, in others it looks atrocious. If you're going to bring up IQ, aside from muddy & some poorly done textures, IQ really wasn't a problem on the GC. The lighting engine was quite robust on the GC according to Kobayashi, each lighting pass done on the PS2 takes a performance hit, unless its custom on the Cube, (per-pixel) you know lighting comes at no computational cost on the GC. (at least up to 8 sources as they are done in parallel to other functions)

People are constantly saying "Capcom can do better than this," with what game? Nothing they've produced this gen looks looks better, Onimusha 3 was their most comprehensively impressive realtime 3D work imo. None of the DMCs, & we'll neglect the first two pre-rendered Onimushas. The models aren't quite as "detailed?" The models are nowhere close to as detailed. Some of the environments suffer badly as well. If you're bringing up jags on the GC version (yes they were there, but tell me what game is jag-free?) prepare for a paper-mache type experience with this version.

Now I'm ripping into these captures, (which is bit premature) but there's at least 6 mos. left in translation iirc. It could indeed look better, & you're right dark, it does need to be seen in motion. For those that are posting MGS3's jungle canopy shots I pose a question, why? Capcom is no KCEJ-W with the PS2 hw, & this isn't a thread declaring the PS2's weaknesses. Anytime a game uses a console specific developed engine, the port will invariably suffer technical hurdles not present in the original. In this case, load times will be increased, framerate stutter, & simultaneously displayed enemies on-screen will in all probablity be toned down also. (in addition to what dark10x noted, textures, details, etc.) The cutscenes as well will be altered.

G4 just showed footage of RE4 PS2,

Unless G4 is shitting us, it looks a *lot* better in motion. The lighting actually looks very close to the gamecube.

*edit* well close as in it doesn't look like it has no lighting at all as some of these pics indicate

I know GAF hates G4 but they just showed the PS2 trailer for RE4 while they're talking about E3. Surprisingly, it actually doesn't look as bad in motion. They were showing alot of Ada in the footage too btw and what looks like where all the screenshots came from, like the zip line shot.

They just showed RE4 for the PS2 on G4. Adam and Morgan said they made a big mistake when they said the PS2 version would look no where near as good as the GC version.

And if they wouldn't have told me it was the PS2 version, i honestly wouldn't have been able to really tell.

But they haven't announced the exclusive content yet!

Caught the trailer on G4 and it certainly looks good. Not quite as good as on the GC, but it's closer than I thought it would be.

Its almost as if capcom is tryin to push the GC over the PS2, cuz when you compare, it makes it look like a better buy

GC= great
PS2= ugly

Definitely looks worse, but that's expected.

Porting RE4 to PS2 would be like porting Jak3 to GC. Like RE4, Jak3 is designed specifically for the original hardware and tweaked to it as much as possible.

They did, and Flipper was finalized even earlier iirc. In terms of technology timelines, GC and PS2 are closer to each other than any other platforms (DC, Xbox).

and considering, power-wise, the GC is closer to the xbox than ps2... you have to wonder why people think that nintendo is going to skimp out on the revolution's prowess .

I don't remember this part of the game and I've played the game to completion TWICE! Where is this part? It looks like the first village area but I should remember it then.

The part with the guy in the chopper that helps Leon.

I had another look at the screenshot and just realised where it was from. Man the graphics are so awful in that screenshot the area iss almost unrecognizable. :lol

Still I'm sure it looks much better in motion then those screenshots would have you believe. It won't be as good as the Cube version though obviously.

Just watch the video, and the ps2 version looks great!! Much better than those pictures!

Fantastic conversion! Thank you Capcom, I did not think it would look that good!

IQ really wasn't a problem on the GC

That's absolutely untrue. The GC version had a very rough look and some rather bothersome flaws found throughout. Easily among the worst games on the GC in regards to image quality...
