Reddit finally bans "Coontown", "WatchN*****sDie", & animated child porn forums

What the hell does Obama have to do with Reddit? Or any attacks on the 1st Amendment?

Reddit has every right to throw out whatever or whomever they don't like.

Most people in a wartorn country don't die, but we still characterize a wartorn country as "unusually dangerous" not "relatively peaceful". It all depends where your baseline barometer is.
lol what? When the vast majority of users will never stumble upon a racist subreddit without purposely seeking them out.. comparing that to a wartorn country?

10,000 subscribers to coontown, 195 million unique visitors to reddit last month.. .005%.. the comparison is laughable. I can't even find the total number of reddit subscribers which would make the numbers even more silly.

lol and the 100,000 people subscribed to r/lgbt make reddit.. what according to your standards?

I'm vaguely aware of all sort of wierd shit on the internet like darknet, silkroad, snuff sites.. so what? It doesn't and shouldn't represent the internet as a whole, so I'm not sure why a handful of small racist subs are supposed to represent reddit. Especially when they are dwarfed by everything else.

edit:

last month, reddit had
195,209,169 unique visitors

yesterday, reddit powered
10,235
active communities

onsisting of over
3,646,626
logged in redditors

10,000 subscribers to some minor racist sub ain't shit.
https://www.reddit.com/about

20,000, and you're kidding yourself if you think subscribers are the only ones on Reddit about that bullshit. Honestly, I wouldn't say Reddit is a racist site, just one that gives racists a platform as long as they're not a financial burden.

I go on Reddit too because it's a good source for info on a lot of subjects, but I don't feel the need to defend the assy parts of it

I think that's a stretch. What is that max number of concurrent user that have been logged on? Also that number is irrelevant when you factor in the dozens of other racist subreddits, plus all the vile shit you see in the main ones.

No, it's a vast understatement. They get nearly a couple hundred million unique viewers a month. It's a stretch to call the site racist when less than one percent of those users are subscribers to the racist sub-forums.

#notallRedditusers?

I don't mind reddit banning these racist and illegal subs, I didn't even know they existed and have no wish to visit or be associated with em. What does annoys me are people who try to paint reddit as some racist site.

ermm..

r/lgbt 108,370
r/ainbow 37,583
r/feminism 51,731
r/twoXchromosomes 3,352,350
r/AskWomen 208,572

I don't get it, you can find anything and everything on reddit and these tiny little subreddits are supposed to represent all reddit posters? lol

A couple things. That's alot racist people by any metric, its a pretty racist site. TwoX is a default now so I imagine that's were those subs came from. Being a racist doesn't mean you auto subscribe to everyone racist sub either. My number one thing is that whenever and I literally mean whenever a post involves black people. The most hateful and vile things get utter. Doesn't matter what the post is. My example was last christmas some dude posted a picture of his reaction to his christmas gift. It was a innocuous reaction like the the thousands of other ones, the only difference was that the kids were black. Probably can't see the upvotes or comments anymore but they were trash. The shit bleeds everywhere

This is not necessarily true. Yes they may not stumble to a sub called coontown, but they'll still be exposed to tons of racist shit due to how prolific it can be on the main subreddits.

No, it's a vast understatement. They get nearly a couple hundred million unique viewers a month. It's a stretch to call the site racist when less than one percent of those users are subscribers to the racist sub-forums.

Again Unique views aren't really relevent, since we do not know what the distribution of those views are. For all we know most of those people could've been going to those racist subs. Very unlikely but it shows that we should only be looking at the people actually logged in and that number is about 3.5 million. Much smaller than "10s of millions."

That's probably the lamest use of that hashtag I've ever seen. We're talking about less than 1% of reddit users.

Don't think anyone is saying that everyone who uses Reddit is a racist. Unfortunately, there are a very large number of racists and scumbags that have made their home on that site. Reddit needs to deal with it and it's unbelievable it took them this long to ban shitty subreddits like that.

So what's the logic behind getting rid of the neogaf hate site first then weeks later to get rid of watchniggersdie? Did an administrator go " you know what this amirox fellow isn't gay and that's just mean" while saying hmm watchniggersdie is a vibrant community full of intellectuals tackling race issues head on, good for them.

They were harassing other subreddits apparently. That's one of the few no nos of Reddit.

The first group was harassing people off of reddit. (the /FPH bans started because of how they were encouraging people to harass imgur employees)

These subreddits were harassing people on reddit itself.

TwoX doesn't even belong on the positive list, as soon as it became default it now frequently gets invaded by MRA trolls.

Animated CP? Is that considered illegal if it's just anime though?

I mean those subreddits were bad I suppose, but apart from watchniggersdie, the racist subs could have just stayed as they were just racists people talking to other racists people.

Illegal? No not in the US but then again neither is racism.

And hey if Reddit wants to be a place where racist people just meet other racist people they're free too, but that also means everyone who thinks reddit ought not to give racists a playtform to spread their bullshit can call them out on it.

These are business decisions

The general public doesn't look favorably on CP and racism sewing circles for some reason

Man that thread is just depressing.

Not even going to lie, all these raciest comments that are coming into my inbox are really making me pretty sad. Hope everyone has a great holiday.

Like people get so caught up this whole "free speech" thing that they completely forget that there's a human on the other side of their "speech"

Also notice how the front page isn't racist and misogynistic spam against one person.

Equating the new CEO to a dictator that caused millions of deaths.

Why do so many sites not called reddit care about what happens on reddit so much? Is it like a barometer where the racism of reddit is a general indication of the racism of the Internet?

Interesting, I had no idea that you'd need to have a verified email on your reddit account to visit quarantined subreddits:

You must have a verified email to view this community

Communities that are dedicated to shocking or highly offensive content are quarantined.

I can't be bothered.

The fuck? I'd heard of coontown and, as despicable as that was, I'm blown away they had another one dedicated to animated CP.

I know there are a lot of good, decent subreddits out there but God damn are there some super shitty ones that should have been killed off long ago.

Some parts of reddit sound way worse than the shit I used to hear came out of some parts of 4chan.

I don't understand why these forums needed "dealing with". Why not just ignore them? People who enjoy that stuff can post there, and people who don't can just not go to those sections.

It also seems odd to complain that they spend too much time "dealing with" certain forums, ban them, then spend a lot of time "dealing with" the new ones created due to streisand effect.

it always amazes me how "racists" spend so much time actually discussing other ethnicities they claim to hate. if you hate someone why put time and energy into talking about them. I hate rapists, killers and pedophiles but I don't waste my time discussing topics about them with other people. like what constructive discussions could they be having in those subreddits ?

Considering its popularity/traffic and largely hands-off nature, it seems like a good rough measure.

Imagine you run a very large and popular restaurant, but you have a couple who come daily and sit at the same table, decked out head to toe in white supremacist symbols. Your restaurant doesn't actively condone or support the couple, just serves them and tries not to look. Meanwhile, people who think about eating at your restaurant see the couple or hear about them and think twice. They tell their friends. Other businesses who were considering joint ventures with your restaurant decide to reconsider. So while you don't bleed money, you do miss out. Do you decide to prioritize the income from one couple, or from a considerably larger number of people?

*This analogy probably has some flaws but the point is that banning the subs was a business decision done out of convenience

Out of all this, I'm flabbergasted there was an animated child porn subreddit...
I think it said a lot about audience community when they could casually drop "CP" as an abbreviation with the assumption that everyone understands what it means.

Seems apt enough. I'm not going to mourn the removal, but I guess it does feel a little sad that it had to affect Reddit as a business before they were willing to step in. I would have censored them for ideological reasons, but ideology was the reason they were kept around this long. I'm glad I'm not a platform owner, because it's not always easy to make these types of calls.

Because there's a lot of overlap in internet communities. Members of reddit frequent other sites as well.

In theory, those subreddits wouldn't have any effect on anyone outside of them, but as we all know, shit attracts flies.

Because these assholes infect other popular subreddits with their hateful bullshit, like r/news, r/videos and AskReddit.

The mods tried quarantining them, but it didn't work. Good riddance.

Its like saying we should have a pro-GG thread here to contain the GGers that randomly popup and hope they dont shit up other threads.

Reddit wants more ad dollars. Thus they need to do what the advertisers want them to do. There will be more to come.

I don't know what gg means besides good game, but I'm confident It's nothing like that. It's easy to be on reddit and never ever see any of those subreddits. I know I didn't

Neogaf threads like that will make front page and clash with all users immediately. Reddit is nothing like neogaf. Reddit is the platform that communities like neogaf can be in.

Go into any /news thread involving a black person and try to say you dont see a highly or moderately upvoted racist comment. /news is the one of the defaults AKA front pages of reddit.

Then go into any other of the main defaults and see if you can find the same.

I 100% guarantee that you will.

Some gamers found a email list of journalists colluding with each other. Some other gamers were harassing people. We like to throw them all in the same group.

And all of them were completely clueless about how people in professional industries operate.

This makes a compelling case for the, "why in the duck not" crowd. Because why in the fuck would reddit not purge such a small percentage?
