Well I think the environment art looks pretty good in the game. It's the design that seems to be faulty in the first place.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
The games you listed ran perfectly fine on consoles. Jedi Survivor is the worst of the bunch, but even that runs relatively fine on PS5. .

Sub 720p and 15 fps is not relatively fine lol, even Calisto launched with a laundry list of bugs and issues. Dead Space had the infamously terrible IQ especially on PS5.

Games which launch with fewer issues are the exception, not the norm. The last time we had a great game launch without issues was HiFi Rush. Even RE4, as good as it is, needed a months worth of patches to sort itself out.

I mean, third party games are more likely to have issues... Redfall is a first party exclusive... It absolutely should have been better.

Bit early to decide this, Bethesda hasn't released any of the big IP's yet and might not for a while.

My only counter is this: Microsoft only had Nokia for 3 years. They’ve had Zenimax now for two. Bethesda themselves admit their primary focus is Starfield so it’s going to be another 2-3 years before Indiana Jones and god only knows how long before TES6.

In roughly the same amount of time they owned Nokia, the only thing they’re getting out of Zenimax exclusively is Hi-Fi Rush, Redfall, and Starfield — and, frankly, they would have gotten them anyway without spending $7.5b because we know all were in production prior to the acquisition and both Redfall and Starfield had been confirmed multiplatform.

They spent $7.5b but are effectively in the exact same position had they not.

The Reforge Gaming theory is moronic. In no way would they have to scrap everything and start from the ground up just to release on Xbox. Also if there was a contract for a Sony Redfall, they sure as hell would have talked about it and taken MS for breach of contract. Especially given all the ABK discourse. He's just trying to use Redfall as a Xbox is doomed. He literally used it to talk shit about Hellblade, Indiana Jones, Starfield and literally any other Xbox release. The separate console builds come down the line, not at the beginning.

Well games exist as demo versions in order to gain funding - Sony aren't paying for exclusivity off of game pitches - they want to see gameplay loops and functional mechanics. That there was no contract between Sony and Arkane doesn't mean that wasn't a goal of Arkane given they'd sold Deathloop and Ghostwire. Sony may have seen it and said pass, or maybe they just hadn't got round to completing the contract negotiations before the acquisition.

As for the cancelling of what may have been a PS5 exclusive mid development, scrapped and assets ported and rebuilt in 2 years - look at the game that released today. Does it look like 5 years worth of content and development? The theoretical change of direction is simply to explain why the game is in this state - incomplete and flawed.

The above seems plausible. The alternative is that MS really did manage to take a company that put out 2 next gen games last year that were well received, and killed that same company in just 2 years after "simplifying" their previously mulitplat development policy. The latter really would spell xbox is doomed if MS acquisitions have the kiss of death like that - I personally can't believe it.

As someone who is a lifelong Xbox fan and even got a message from Microsoft about being one of the first 1,000 people to sign up for Xbox live and never have my subscription laps, ever, I just can't for the life of me figure out what is going on over there.

They have more studios than ever and yet they can't seem to release games in a timely manner. When they do, most of the games they've released are mediocre with some very few exceptions being great and some being terrible.

It just makes no sense.

Right there with you...I have no idea what they are doing hahaha. Maybe it's all a joke and we just aren't getting the punchline.

Final fantasy XVI will be a good 20 hours game, but you’ll spend hundreds of hours with friends killing vampires in Redfall

Some folks swear this game was already in development long before the acquisition or any prospect of it being on game pass.

I don't see the correlation of a rental service being the problem if this was always how the game was designed.
This game has not been in development since 2017. Remember that MS went in and said to get rid of the ps5 version so it wouldn't surprise me if this game had a soft reboot at some point. I'm sure the details will come out at some point. I don't seehow this has had a proper dev cycle though- its too bad.

Have you played Redfall on XSX yet? It’s truly terrible. Far worse than the respective console performance of Jedi Survivor, Callisto, and Dead Space.

Thankfully not, I'm gonna wait till the performance is better.

Don't confuse me citing those games as an apology for redfall, I'm just not agreeing with the comments that game pass is to blame here.

You don't need to scrap everything to move the game onto similar hardware. Maybe if they were going from Switch to XSX, because then you'd want higher quality assets and stuff, but PS5 and XSX is a lateral move. Deathloop and Ghostwire were finished on PS5 and released on XSX a year later, largely poor ports but that's like, worst case scenario (and I highlly doubt it took a year of work to finish them).

I think 7.5bn was expensive but MS clearly can and will overpay if required. I also think that we would need to wait a couple of years to see what happens. The period of which we analyse the ROI of acquisitions shouldn't be limited to a couple of years or any set amount cause its not how businesses work.

The value of Bethesda may be better in 4-5 years than Nokia ever would have been.

Perhaps. It seems Starfield really is the litmus test for the future of the acquisition. If it ends up mired in problems and controversy, well, I’m not sure the long term profitability of the brand would be very rosy. Especially since their last big project was also a dud (FO76).

Delays can only save an incompetent team for so much. They spent five years on this. FIVE YEARS. What exactly would another 6 months achieve? The team is clearly dysfunctional and the management is fucked. The best thing to do is just release it and then try to do better next time. Preferrably by revamping corporate structure from top to bottom. Redfall's fallings are far more than just some bugs.

This reminds me of Babylon's Fall, where you have a decent developer that bit off way more than they could chew.

I have Game Pass so i would almost give it a chance, but not with 30fps and that AI. Not worth the time or hard drive space.
