Report: Marathon Delay Likely as Sony Cancels All Paid Marketing Plans

Bungie is a shit show.

Just make a proper persistent Destiny game and turn it into the fully fledged MMO it craves to be.

I'd kill for a proper Destiny "reboot" - keeping all your shit but the game is actually built to handle itself.

I know people here may want to gloat, but this is a huge bummer for all the ppl working on it.

It's prob not their fault, they prob saw the writing on the wall and some may have said something.

They're going to pivot from extraction shooter.

Repackage it as a loot driven, pve grind with battle pass and cosmetics. The extraction element will be a separate mode and more hardcore.

And it's the right thing to do. It's too niche at the moment.

im with you, except i'd want a full reboot, wipe and everything.

and make legendaries special again. With all the content now, nothing stacks up to that feeling of getting a gally or vex mythoclast random drop from a nightfall or raid in the OG Destiny.

This is a good idea which is why it won't happen. These companies are hell bent on chasing trends for the quick buck.

They're terrified to do that.

Rebooting Destiny cannibalises their own game. So, instead, it gets layers and layers of ever more absurd, esoteric content. It's no longer a coherent game. Just a random assortment of zones with loot.

For those of you who predicted delay, looks like you are going to be right. I predicted they'd force it out in time to make the Xmas rush and beat out COD.

But you may still be wrong if they end up cancelling it outright!

But that is unlikely as they still released concord. If they released that disaster they'll release anything.

[Edit] posting on a forum though is a sprint, or calico calico beats you to the punch

Marathon needs a whole new direction and way too much work for a little delay

Plus having to go through all assests and maps to scrub for the stolen art. 6 month delay minimum

And by the looks of it, it also goes for internal marketing.

They went a full week with zero updates or previews of marathon last week. That's despite saying in the live chat the Friday before that they were going to scrub the videos and show the new improved visuals this past week. Nada. Zero updates.

Pretty sure one of the main reason for the delay or cancelation of marketing plans probably has to do with the plagiarism.

They can't just advertise the game now without getting sued with all that artists work there.

If it wasn't for that, I get the feeling that Sony was really pushing Bungie to get it out the door.

I thought the PlayMA stream was totally tone deaf and brain dead. It was absolutely unbelievable that they were ignoring the elephant in the room. I've been in rooms like that and it's stunning when there is such a lack of leadership and critical thinking. The idea that you can double down your way through a bad situation is baffling. Smart leaders go into crisis aversion mode and I don't think Sony has that. They showed that with Concord and they're showing it now.

I think they've shown an alarming trend of bad decision making and you can see it from Concord, Marathon, Fairgames, God of War Live Service, TLOU Online to Intergalactic.

Sony needs to hire outside evaluators that aren't yes men. The games they are greenlighting make zero sense and I know you can't get everything right, you're going to have some things that don't land and you're going to have some oddball decisions that turn out amazing. I wouldn't have greenlit Roblox or Minecraft, so I'm not the golden goose here, but I feel like Sony who normally has a really good track record for this stuff has been alarmingly bad recently and I'm not seeing enough consequence for that other than people losing their jobs and studios being closed.

Connie Booth caught an axe, but was she really the one who greenlit everything? How much of it was Shuhei? I don't have the answers to that, but at some point Hermen has to bear responsibility and maybe even Scott Rohde, but at the same time you have to kind of remember that SIE has been successful for the most part by not micromanaging studios, so maybe this is just a collective fuck up by a lot of internal studios, just happening at once.

I'm starting to get worried about Sony
Sony will survive, but the real worry is Bungie. These guys are cooked and now falling into the same heap as BioWare, Ubisoft, blizzard, etc. Major fall from grace.

At least we will always have the halo games to look back fondly on they made.

Every creative that forged Halo and Destiny has been gone from Bungie for years. There was an internal hostile coup years back where ex-Microsoft employees took over. Not developers, business admin and marketing guys. Plenty of vids out there detailing this. It's just a Bungie skin suit. Moreso than even modern Bioware and the like.

There is no Bungie here. Sony bought a husk with one IP.

PS+ and third party GAAS is so much of the revenue right now, you can see why they felt why they needed to chase it.

Minecraft was originally a solo dev game. Microsoft bought it after it got popular.

If they are delaying then its either a short one or a year imo if not its in GTA's launch window.

I think honestly, a full year and a half under the right management could probably fix this game. And in fact if you put me in charge of it, I'd say I need three years.

  • I'd change the art direction entirely to mirror a lot of classic Marathon and Halo
  • I'd create a single player campaign that continues the story of Marathon, perhaps even a reboot/remake of the first game or the first three games
  • For the extraction end of it, I'd add proximity chat, single queues and duo queues
  • I'd put in several extra modes as additional areas for people who don't want to play extraction to still play online and enjoy themselves, BR, CTF, Forge e.t.c.
I'd pitch Marathon to Sony as Sony's own Halo with single player campaigns every 2-3 years and build Destiny 3 in the process.

Without significant knowledge of all the leadership, I feel like Peter Parsons, Joe Zielger, and Joseph Cross all have to go.

A more sober approach would have been continuing what worked so well with PS4 and collecting that sweet sweet 30% from third party GaaS that uses your store. So much less risk on that path while we navigate this new economy.

But where will the talent come from to make that campaign? Microsoft's game plans for Xbox sounded similarly good on paper, but at some point, you need visionary creatives. Maybe they really didn't do their homework on who was still on the Bungie payroll, or they thought the logo imbued some type of magical powers on the people wearing it.
