Report: Marathon Delay Likely as Sony Cancels All Paid Marketing Plans

I know people here may want to gloat, but this is a huge bummer for all the ppl working on it.

It's prob not their fault, they prob saw the writing on the wall and some may have said something.
How is it not their fault when the people working on it are the ones who made it?

I hope the do take the time to incorporate that fat guy from Concord - he would be a great tank character in Marathon and could really push the game to the masses!

How much money have Sony lost now chasing the GaaS golden goose? I was told by Men_in_Boxes that not every one of Sony's GaaS games needed to be a hit - that all they needed was for one slam dunk to make the entire effort worthwhile - yet aside from Helldivers II almost every one of their efforts has colossally failed. Most projects have been stillborn and have completely wasted the time of top studios for this generation.

The pivot back to single player cannot come soon enough. Leave the GaaS to the companies who actually know what the fuck they're doing.
You just know those old school Yakuza shareholders at Sony Japan are watching all this play out and making all manner of scary sounding grunting noises. A perfect storm is forging a world that does not have a place for discrete Playstation hardware. Billions wasted on developer salaries. You could have brought VAIO back to life with that kind of bankroll. What kind of assurances can Herman make to these people that the ship is being turned around? Their biggest Playstation acquisition ever is about to soil the bed in spectacular, public fashion.

That Sony exec who said "all we need is one big GAAS o cover the rest" assumed that hit game would be Fortnite levels of success AND any bombs would be reasonably low costs. He never imagined at the time of Bungie bombing, high cost Concord, and most studios/games cancelled.

He thought at the time if 10 new GAAS come out, if 1 is a big hit and the other 9 breakeven-ish and shut down, that the one winner still leads to big profits.

It's like stocks. He buys 10 stocks. As long as one is a giant gainer that should be enough to increase the portfolio as long as the other 9 picks are so so. Problem is, 9 stocks all dropped 50-100%. So even though his one great pick is +300%, it's still not enough to cover the rest.

Anyone have Sony imploding whilst Nintendo launches a new highly anticipated system on their bingo card?

Serious wild times we are experiencing in regards to gaming.

I'm surprised Sony still haven't canned all their GAAS games yet. I think Fairgames one is going to be but marathon will get released to a poor reception like Concord.

Sony will survive, but the real worry is Bungie. These guys are cooked and now falling into the same heap as BioWare, Ubisoft, blizzard, etc. Major fall from grace.

At least we will always have the halo games to look back fondly on they made.
Bungie sucks ass now and Sony is retarded for paying 3.7 billion dollars for them.
What have they released after Sony aquired them??🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

If this happens, it will stack more against Marathon than what is already stacked.

It is a very expensive game that would suffer a significant addition to the budget, and every person would expect major changes and be ready to bash it if it looks similar on return.

In theory, they almost must delay it after recent events, it's understandable and the right move, but I can't possibly see a future where they can turn this around without turning it into a different game entirely, which I can't see happening.

I don't know how they can get out of this. I hope they go nuts and change it into Destiny Battle Royale.

I'm starting to get worried about Sony
I'll be worried if they still release this in September. The only mistake they made here was announcing a release date when they did. That was very stupid.

They also need to take over Bungie. Convince Ted Price to come out of retirement and steady the ship.

This all took place well before Destiny 2 launched. Jason Jones is the primary share holder at Bungie but it's widely accepted that Parsons has him boxed up but does not have the leverage to oust him. His last public appearance was in 2021. Do you think he's working on Marathon? Staten was the primary mind behind Destiny. Sure, he got attached to Infinite during late development and is largely credited with salvaging it to the extent that it was salvaged. Jones and Griesemer are the fathers of the console FPS. They were the driving creatives on the gameplay systems side of things. Destiny was an extension of the Halo gameplay loop, with Staten creating the lore and universe. Luke Smith was the driving force behind Destiny 2 and at the time that was seen as a lukewarm consolation prize to the Bungie faithful. Bet they'd really like to have that consolation prize now considering what is left. Even then he was just expanding on what Staten created.

Can you share any names of people you think were fundamentally important to the creation of Halo or Destiny that are still at Bungie and working passionately on Marathon? Kinda dodged that one. Probably just an oversight...

GAF I might have found Pete Parsons alt account. In fairness, Pete will be remembered as a financial shark for taking all these millions from the publishing industry. There will be books written about the man. I'd be surprised if he didn't have deals inside of Sony before the acquisition. Any amount of due diligence on Sony's part would have immediately stopped that purchase. Backroom deals had to be made. Even now he's just biding his time until his shares mature. It's gonna make a hell of a video essay one day. I really don't see how he doesn't get his ass physically kicked by the real guys who built Bungie with their blood sweat and tears. Have you watched the video I posted? Did you know anything about these details before you started posting in this thread? Tell me more about this mobygames list.

You're fundamentally lazy...

First off, you have no idea what Jason Jones has done for the last 15 years. How involved he has been in on any games. You're just like a moth drawn to an open flame. You get attached to names for the sake of names. I specifically told you that you can go to mobygames and you can see how many of the original Halo team worked on Witch Queen and it's considerable. More people at Bungie who worked on Halo 3 worked on Destiny 2 than worked on Halo 1. It's all there in the credits, I'm not going to pick names off a list to present to you and pretend as if someone was more key than another, simply because I'm more familiar with their name.

I'm Pete Parsons' alt account who said he should be fired... that tracks... you're a troll.

Anyone else utterly stunned by SILKYSMOOTH30FPS SILKYSMOOTH30FPS avatar picture? They must be the wokest looking person I have ever seen. Have the ResetEra gang quietly re-invaded?

That's Tim Heidecker

Given how mediocre the game alpha was, the bad live chat, and the over-looming cloud of death which is everyone talking about their stolen art assets, I dont think they can get out of it.

Except just cancelling the game.

People stopped talking about Concord (and the studio) after it got shut down. It took a small amount of time to totally fade away as people started talking about the rumoured $400M cost which kept it going. But even that faded away and no game sites or streamers talk about it anymore except in passing when chatting about Sony GAAS. But you dont see dedicated Concord threads anymore for a long time.

All releasing Marathon does is keep the torture going. And with 4 more months, it'll keep going. That's a lot of runway for laughs. It'd take a miracle of improvements, gamer/streamer/game site sentiment of ignoring the plagiarism, and gamers suddenly getting all amped up on extraction shooters to be a success.

Never mind needing to roll boxcars. Sony and Bungie would need to roll triple 6s.

I thought that Sony must have seen something truly special behind Bungie's closed doors to throw that much money at them. Surely...

Nope, it's just some bland extraction shooter.

It was such a genius move by the heads of bungie to sell their company for this kinda money. Its insane. After all they weren't worth a dimme. Even 100m would have been a scam to buy bungie. Holly Molly.

I think honestly, a full year and a half under the right management could probably fix this game. And in fact if you put me in charge of it, I'd say I need three years.

  • I'd change the art direction entirely to mirror a lot of classic Marathon and Halo
  • I'd create a single player campaign that continues the story of Marathon, perhaps even a reboot/remake of the first game or the first three games
  • For the extraction end of it, I'd add proximity chat, single queues and duo queues
  • I'd put in several extra modes as additional areas for people who don't want to play extraction to still play online and enjoy themselves, BR, CTF, Forge e.t.c.
I'd pitch Marathon to Sony as Sony's own Halo with single player campaigns every 2-3 years and build Destiny 3 in the process.

Without significant knowledge of all the leadership, I feel like Peter Parsons, Joe Zielger, and Joseph Cross all have to go.
So scrap the lot and start again basically.

I think a year delay, sticking with he same art but better graphics and fleshing the game out properly, more maps, solo and duos, prox chat, more pve etc and i think they'll be fine.

Totally.

Funny how the second Sony buys them, maybe a year later suddenly Bungie financials tank 45%, Marathon is looking to be a disaster, and who knows if there's even a Destiny 3 coming. we all need stock tips from Pete Parsons because he knows when to sell at the high.

Whatever business slides and games under dev (like Marathon) they showed Sony execs must had been so impressive it was worth $3.6B. There is now way IMO some Destiny 2 DLC, Marathon and their GAAS expert wisdom is worth that much. They either totally fudged their financials, promoted Marathon extraction shooter as a giant killer game, and topped it off showing how perhaps a Destiny 3 in the works will lead to a gazillion sales.

Then again, maybe Sony was just so amped up on GAAS with endless money greenlit by the CEO that Jim and Hermen just didnt give a shit and bought up as many GAAS studios they could while not fairly evaluating the acquisitions as they really are.

But in this timeline you get scraps for single player games and no gaas games. You get barely nothing except Xbox games.
Let's not kid ourselves, the Xbox games have been rubbish and aren't even worth a mention, and as for Sony releasing less FP Games, it's a worthy sacrifice to eradicate GaaS.

Microsoft was right! Everything is an Xbox and that's included Sony Management! Jesus why do these guys always have to do stupid shit and chase stupid trends especially when they see the result from so many others?

If your going to make a GAAS title it has to offer something bigger/ better / and look the part also! No one cares for the me too games anymore!

I dont think they would have done any better as 343. Sony shouldn't have bought them in the first place.
Why? This step seemed logical at the time. Bungie was known as one the best FPS developers in the world with a good portfolio. The merge looked promising!

Marathon delay would be a total disaster, but it implies that releasing it would be an even bigger disaster.

I mentioned that Concord's failure showed Sony just had no idea what they were doing with this market, the fact that they kept sinking money into Marathon and Fairgame% proves that bigly, and usually when you enter a market you do not understand things go badly.

Sony made one of the biggest mistakes of all time buying Bungie. Now what should they do: 1) put more money in the dead horse; 2) let him die.

No matter what they choose, they have already lost.

they are starting to believe.... believe that all these gaas games were a mistake and fans wont buy into shit.
I dont think Sony has changed.

When Bungie was laying off people, they even carved out some Bungie workers to form a new SIE studio LFG Games to make another GAAS game. And when their Deviation Games studio shut down (lead by Jason Blundell), they rehired him to lead new Dark Outlaw Games studio. Nobody knows what games they are making but these guys come from COD studios. So probably a shooter GAAS.

New studio logo. Same people and GAAS games.

lmao, how do you manage to get 2 concords in one go.
The shit reveal, tired gameplay design, entire aesthetic bootlegged.
Simply amazing.

rofl, even.
This is the professional, top shelf , AAA industry.
Wtf happened to this place? Flop after flop, virtue signalling DEI bs, predatory monetization/design loops.
Fukin kek.

The whole history was filled with delays and mismanagement. No way this company was worth 3b.

Unless there is another GAAS game that pops up out of nowhere, Fairgames is the next one after Marathon. Supposedly 2026. Thats going to be 3 shooter bombs in 3 years.

If Blundell is working on an original IP without single player... it means Sony hasn't learned shit.

I don't think any publisher's reputation would survive two Concords in a row, and that's where they were headed. More pertinently, senior management couldn't expect to survive a second Concord. Delaying followed by a quiet cancellation makes sense.

I hope no one would be surprised by this. The playtest reception didn't paint a pretty picture for a variety of reasons. Hell, the reveal event didn't even do that. The time of months between then and release were simply not enough to deliver a quality product. Then you had the whole plagiarism thing. It's just a whirlwind of uncertainty for Marathon as a whole. The only things that made sense to me were cancel it or delay it, I don't think releasing it in September would pan out too well. Even if they decided to make it F2P.
