Report: NX Handheld Dimensions, Layout Info, Lack of Region Lock

I don't think they're mutually exclusive, just in competition on a system that is likely only $200, $250 at the most. What you're saying is certainly feasible and a nice feature, but this is going to be a low cost product and to expect all things will only result in disappointment.

Not to mention simply from a marketing stand point it confuses things. Just explaining a hybrid system in the first place and that when docked the system is more powerful will be a hard enough concept and selling point to convey to many consumers. Add in that they can eschew docking but still play off TV, but with reduced performance and visuals, in order to have a second screen setup will make that message more complicated. The more caveats and ifs you add to your pitch the harder it will be to sell people on it.

If they can pull it off I'm all for it, but if I have to pick and choose I can easily live without a second screen option. Having a visually tangible improvement to the experience on TV is way more important to me. If I'm just playing the same 720p image on a big screen I'll just end up sticking to the handheld display only.

You dont need second screen gaming at all .. just dock the portable and play on your tv it is as simple as that... Nintendo needs to stop thinking about wii remotes and second screens if they want this concept to succeed. They need to steer as far as possible from anything Wii / Wii U related otherwise people are going to be confused again.

They dont even have to explain to the user the graphics area better when plugged to a tv people will connect the dots when they see it.. All they have to say is "At home or on the go the same experience anywhere". This concept wont be hard to market imo if they have 1 message the spam all the time.

We have 1 platform , 1 console, 1 device, 1 set of IP for the eco system done.

That very well might work, but I'm just not sure at this point. I think they need to communicate to people that playing on TV is an improved experience over playing on the handheld beyond just being on a larger screen. Granted at least that's the hope since we don't know anything at this point on how any of this will work.

"At home or on the go, the same experience anywhere," is a nice bit of copy, but the issue I think that will exist is that people have an inherent idea in their mind of handhelds being inferior to consoles. People like playing games on their phones or tablets, but they generally pale in comparison to actual console games. Especially for actual handheld gaming devices like the 3DS and Vita which fair worse at a glance. They look good for what they are, but they aren't consoles. Then you have the entire failed market of shit like the Ouya, Apple TV, various Android TV set tops and a whole lot of other systems that have attempted to bring the mobile gaming market to the living room and bombed in that regard because they're generally subpar experiences or too niche.

They need to convince people their product is different from all that crap, and actually delivers both a great handheld and great console experience. Not just a great handheld experience and that same handheld experience on a larger screen which in reality is only a barely passable console one.

That's why he said "More than you expect." He knew most people expected 540p or something close to Vita. 720p is super unexpected for a "withered technology" Nintendo handheld, but people on the bleeding edge of tablet/smartphone tech are expecting 900p, 1080p, 1440p... 720p is very much in line with the hint.

I expected it and posted it and it was too obvious to me yet all of gaf said it was 540p. Now everyone's riding the 720p wave like it's normal....

Does that make me an insider? ;)

Could've said the same and been vague about it and let people's imagination take them wherever.

Based on the rumored specs. If the nx is actually nvidia tegra technology.. more specifically Parker the new tegra chipset. It is going to be substantially more powerful than a new 3ds and also more powerful than a Wii U. If you are between a Wii U and a xone on a portable with decent battery life that is pretty damn good and it won't suffer from what devices like smart phones and tablets suffer from.

You keep forgeting there is one thing Android TV , Apple TV / iPads, and Ouya don't have... Real games ... Nintendo has a huge stable of IP from their portables and consoles that blow away anything those platforms could and have ever provided.

Nintendo can do what the others failed to do because they have exclusive content. Apple takes simple ideas that exist already and make them cash printing machines even with inferior technology. Nintendo has the opportunity to do this if they don't botch it.

I've noticed certain people haven't been posting as much as they would usually do in these Nintendo topics. I know some posters have said Emily tells them things. I'm starting to think people on here know a lot more about what's going on and they just don't want to talk about it much.

Or they realized the human capacity for inane, circular discussion is more limited than they anticipated.

Oh man, I really hope lack of region lock is a thing. But even then, I'm expecting something kinda shitty account-wise; I can't dare to hope that it's more like PS3/PS4 and not weirdly restricted like the Vita.

Matt has said stuff over the years dating back to Wii U reveal days.

Was that all vague as well?

Look, I've been there before. I've known (and still do of sorts) info of a certain gaming product because of good relations with their office (plus working with them once). I either just don't say anything or give good worthy info. I was never into this vague/tease game. And honestly, I don't like most of what I'm reading here from certain insiders. I've got nothing against any of you guys, as I don't really know any of you, but it's just my take on it. Insiders should try and look at it from the non-insider's pov. It's always this bone thrown to them covered by 'NDA, sorry'. Problem is, anyone with absolutely no insider info/contact whatsoever can do this. Absolutely anyone. All you have to do is follow certain people, be vague about info, spread said vague info, cover up with NDA and rinse repeat. Some people do it right while others fail miserably. And in the process of all that, you have cyclones and meltdowns caused by said 'info'. Sadly some of these false prophets take satisfaction in all this, while some others want fame etc. Some do it to get somewhere by playing along hoping that takes them somewhere (it really works sometimes). The other sad part is this ruins it for genuine insiders. Speculation is fun when genuine info is spread. It keeps us on track with proper expectations.

I'm not saying Matt doesn't have info, or anyone for that matter. No one will ever know (Unless busted). But as someone who's a mere mortal in the Nintendo scene, I just hope we're not being played with. (And all of this is why I just wait for official info instead)

So I apologize if I come across in a certain attitude. That's my take on this.

You'd probably get banned tho.

If I was naive, yes.

My take is to trust not a single one of the entire lot. So far, there hasn't been any tangible justification for believing them.

Wait for Eurogamer/Kotaku/other assorted sources whose #1 priority isn't shameless self-aggrandizement.

I get you. I'm not one to tease info, and I hate rumors. Rumors do more harm than good. Teasing sets expectations that are never met. If I have information to share that I can share, then I share it.

In the case of Matt, I know he provided various bits of details back during the Wii U era. It's too far back to recall exactly what was said, but people knew to trust him. Matt doesn't tease information.

I haven't heard much about a potential reveal date. My personal guess is either Sept. 22 or Sept. 29.

I don't expect it to be substantially more powerful, just a cheap option for home play with full-sized controllers, more USB ports and an Ethernet port. Take out the screen and other mobile components and you could sell the the thing for $149-199.

Damn.

See I was gonna say that I see them going for a mid gen Scorpio/Neo style home system but you make a lot more sense.

Something most people don't realize is that people with legit sources talk amongst themselves and share info constantly, and the only reason they have contacts is because they're good at keeping their mouth shut to begin with. That's also why leaks tend to happen regularly but in sparse, stretched out intervals.

I really liked her article from last year when she speculated about what Wii U games are likely to be ported to NX. She made a really strong case for DK: Tropical Freeze and Xenoblade X. Sadly she deleted her tumblr so it's nowhere on the internet at the moment, but I thought it was very insightful and came from an educated perspective.

Never saw it but I'm hoping for this. I never bought a Wii U but I'm very interested in a powerful portable and dock, and would love to be able to get all the Wii U exclusives I missed out on in portable form - especially if the dock added power and a cooling system. We could finally see 1080p60 Bayonetta!

Hmmm, seeing the Direct this afternoon, I wonder how many more 3DS games are still in development. It won't have that much impact of resources for NX development, but still. Nintendo does seem intent on keeping the 3DS alive for a while.
