Report: NX Handheld Dimensions, Layout Info, Lack of Region Lock

I can cope with poor battery life only if there's a low power consumption sleep mode.

Fuck the 3Ds that dies within a day of sleep.

SPOILER: Columbus finds America
Hoping non of these rumors are true.

Basically the rumors make it sound like the NX will be a weak console and a big portable with shitty battery life.

Who wants this?

Solar panels are getting cheaper by the minute. Maybe they should cover the device in those :)

I'm still thinking they will upgrade to Pascal, which is 60% more energy efficient. Meaning cooler, meaning no active cooling, meaning longer battery life since more energy efficient and more battery life because no fan is blowing all the time. This alone could double or tripple the battery life in the devkits. It would also make more room (no coolingfan) for a larger battery.

Kind of think shitty battery life is a good thing. Should mean it is powerful, and they can improve battery in future iterations.

A little weird that it is ahead of schedule.....if so, hurts even more that they couldn't get it out for holiday 2016

I still have two prevailing thoughts until we actually see an announcement.

First, NX is aimed at primarily at the Nintendo faithful and a kiddie audience. Nintendo are doubling down on it since it's a user base that PS4 and Xbox don't actively service. Then they will court the casuals second. Which is completely fine, btw. I think it may have been the only avenue for Nintendo to go.

Second, a part of me still wonders with this alleged convertible controller if Nintendo will show up at an Apple or Android event and show the first "official" controller for mobile gaming.

Eh, gives them that bit longer to have software ready.

If it was designed for just a 'kiddie' audience, it would be an iPod touch like device that is really cheap IMO

So, unclickable circle pads, no triggers, and shit battery life? This is sounding less like a good idea and more like living proof that the hybrid idea doesn't work. Powerful but mediocre and likely expensive handheld, and terrible, overpriced home console. This just seems like a bad idea all around.

Yeah, it seems weird that they would handicap themselves like that with control options. Hoping we are missing something here.

Seeing you jumping to concluions is the best thing about these threads.

I can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Dude stop please. You're making things up and concluding to the most negatives.

On the other hand it would fit with the earliest rumor for Nvidia chips, namely that Nvidia could be sitting on a shitload of unsold X1 chips, and wanted to dump them somewhere to recoup the costs. I can see Nintendo go for loud, less power efficient device if it means selling it for dirt cheap. The major problem with active cooling to them is likely more that moving parts can break or clog up, than noise.

The point was that the standard Tegra X1 wouldn't seem to need a fan by most folks estimations. So it may imply that its clocked higher in preparation for a replacement production chip (the rumoured Parker chip which will be a lot more power efficient whilst able to maintain the same spec as an X1)

Not need to jump to conclusions. Remember that BotW is coming to the NX as well, so it'll probably have at least a 2nd set of shoulder buttons & clickable circle pads.

So Nintendo didn't want to show off this device too early due to them being afraid that other companies will steal their idea...the idea being the Sony PSP with tv out?

Not sure what the harm is at this point.

Sony is committed to the Neo, MS is focused on the Scorpio. My only guess is that Nintendo strongly suspects Sony will make a last ditch effort at the handheld market in Japan.

I wonder is Nintendo would be crazy enough to release a portable with a fan. Dev kits should really have the final components by now, so either Nintendo is going all-out, there really is a docked mode, or a chip based on the X1 is what we're getting. NateDrake still stands by Pascal, though?
Wasn't final Wii u devkits released about the same time the system launched?

I don't think the devkits are final yet.

That omission left out future Wii U VC, and if triggers are missing too it left out alot of potential other VC games. Kinda expected, Nintendo likes limiting themselves for no reason.

Also don't you find weird that one USB is 2.0 and the other 3.0? I'm guessing the 2.0 one will only serve as a power cable, so we need the Y cable circus for HDD all over again. -.-

Yep. Let them take their time and get all the games they can ready. Video games sell systems. I can't wait to see how many games they have!

Zelda: BotW has unfortunately been delayed to a launch window title. We hope you enjoy this replacement game we have been working on in the mean time: Nintendogs Remastered. There will be no other launch software.

I like the idea of the advanced vibration force feedback: that sounds like a really cool aspect when they describe how it can vary what different actions feel like such as hard sword hits versus more gentle thuds of a tennis racket.

Guys, there is a high chance there is no region lock. Why is no one freaking out about this ! Also how would clickable circle pads work ?

It's two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0. That makes me wonder how it'll connect to the dock.

People forget about temperature from a comfort perspective. Until a device is burning through your hands, that is.

I work with mobile devices every day, so I'm probably more aware of it than some, but I really have to tip my hat to Nintendo that they can make a device like the 3DS that can run some pretty visually impressive games without even a noticeable increase in temperature for the player.

Apple. Stop burning me.

Yeah, Apple mostly gets away with it since people play iPad games with the device on a table or on their lap, your hands aren't going to be covering a significant portion of the base too.

I was hoping for 4 USB 3.0 ports, but I guess it makes sense for any external hard drives or USB Ethernet adapters (hopefully there's an actual Ethernet port in the dock).

I just hope it's not as loud as the Wii U rumble...

What if you remove the controllers from that main piece and connect to the dock via those slots?
That'd be weird, considering that you could use those USB ports for other stuff (Ethernet adapter if the NX doesn't have an Ethernet port on the dock, external hard drives, GameCube Adapters, arcade sticks, fight pads, etc.). The NX will probably have a separate connector to interface with the dock.

I don't think I've ever used my 3DS's camera or mic for gameplay purposes, so while more features are nice, I'm not bemoaning the loss of them too hard.

In this case I was thinking that it wouldn't use any of the UBS ports - rather when you detached the controllers it would leave two open ports where the controllers connected. Then the dock would have connectors that would fit inside of those ports. That would require that the controller ports/connectors are able to transfer data.

That wouldn't mesh with the idea/patent of the controllers being plastic, IR based, shells - but since the reported ones support advanced motion feedback and the like, does the 'shell' concept still hold?

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
The battery life thing is ridiculous to talk about right now, especially if devkits don't have the actual chip they're supposed to use.

A thought about the battery life... If they finally opt for micro USB people could use portable power banks which isn't the most convenient but I think it's a good compromise.

If this thing is a hybrid I seriously doubt the usb rumors are true. Any kind of harddrive that is plugged to the dock or at home is contrary to the ability to play any title anywhere. Nintendo could just opt for the use of high capacity SD cards only. This would give it the ability to take large amounts of data anywhere without having a drive land locked and not being able to be used when you leave the home.

I am assuming the usb ports could be for the gamecube adapter for smash or some other peripherals.

How many games do you really need to take with you?
