Reports on Russian connections to Trump [Summaries in OP] #GoldenShowers

There's already a big protest being planned in DC for the inauguration.

Is it wrong for me to wish for a non peaceful protest? Inauguration day needs to be a complete shit show, with the entire world watching. The American people need to show that we don't fully support this bullshit, regardless of the election outcome.

It literally says "confidential" at the top of the report. Why are you doing this?

FWIW, I love Dave Bazan.
The phrase highlighted in the NYT article only states that the addendum was top secret. The investigation was done by a private citizen and private company. The header on said private company/ private investigator's memo states "confidential/sensitive source" which means exactly what it says; that they received this info from a confidential and sensitive source. What it doesn't is that the US government, which had nothing to do with the memo or investigation, somehow made it confidential or top secret.

I wonder if the intelligence community feels they are working against the clock here. Not that they are deadset on validating or proving anything, but knowing that trump will come in, in about a week and stop all related investigations. If the truth (either way) doesn't come out in the next week, it may never come out.

I think some you guys confused about how widespread this 4chan rumor is aren't thinking things through about it.

4chan either got played or played themselves hard. They actually believe that some anonymous poster just made up this article. If you post there against that narrative, you'll most likely get derided and be given pictures of George Costanza. Then users and lurkers went on Twitter and Facebook or whatever and treated it as an obvious truth there.

With BuzzFeed of all sources posting a huge document saying treason with an embarrassing sex act in it, and that fake picture going around, it's obvious how everyone finds "4chan did it" immediately the most plausible explanation. Especially if it works with confirmation bias about ties between Russia and Trump.

So dealing with a lot of people who mainly just didn't bother to read the OP is irritating, but it was inevitable. Not to mention, it's an easier rumor to deal with because of how easy it is to debunk.

Thanks for answering. So you're angry. And right now you're anger is directed at the Democratic party instead of the party you hate. You don't have any real solutions, you just know the entire party needs to go. That goes for the Republicans as well. Basically in your ideal world everybody would go and both parties would be reset. You don't offer any realistic solutions because you can't, so at this point it's "I'll just watch the parties burn" because it's your only option in your mind. So you hate Trump, but you're going to cheer him on as well.

I'm not too happy with the Democratic party right now myself. There does need to be change but I know the answer to that change is not Donald grab them by the pussy Trump. The Republicans are actively trying to reverse any progress made in this country. They are the enemies here.

No, I actually hate both parties. And I do have solutions. I have short-term reformist solutions as articulated by Bernie Sanders, and I have long-term radical solutions as articulated by the a Seattle socialist city councilwoman Kshama Sawant. I have organized and will continue to organize street protests against the Trump administration.

I didn't say the entire party needs to go, I said the elite liberals who lost the 2016 election need to go. Unless you think those people are inextricably linked to the party. You may have a point there, and I'm not ashamed to say I hate them.

The 4chan thing isn't 4chan getting trolled, it's trolls using 4chan to discredit the report.

He can't just come in and stop ongoing investigations, especially if they are in regards to him and his campaign.

The Trumpers are now saying that Clapper told Trump is private that this is all fake, and that's what Trump was referring too. In their minds this is dead. At least that's what I was told when I was talking to somebody on facebook. They'll believe anything Trump tells them even though it's been shown he lies, all the time. Can't even be honest about knowing Putin.

Isn't the House going to see the intel documents Trump/Obama received last week? If so, I imagine the lie dies tomorrow as there is no way House members stay quiet if Trump is outright lying about this.

It is certainly worth giving some people the benefit of the doubt. There are other kinds of people, well known around these parts that don't deserve any benefit of the doubt. That 4chan rumor isn't them getting played, it is actively them spreading disinformation.

You seem to think it's just the "epic silly pictures and tasteless jokes" part of 4chan. That disinfo crap is from /pol/, a stronghold for the alt-right. Their intention is 100% to try to bury this story by claiming it is a hoax, because it would be devastating for their "cause" if it's true. Their goal is fully intentional and malicious misinformation.

Yup. They are using 4chan to discredit it. It is a message board after all same way this is and reddit it. They are trying to say its fake same way places pushed all the bullshit during the campaigns.

Just because reddit, 4chan, or even here are posting it doesn't make it real. Look at who is reporting what and take that information it. Also remember buzzfeed and cnn are being lumped together.

No, there was actually a poster that said he did it, and 4chan fell for it. Might be a group of people behind it, but I really think 4chan believes the shit they're spewing about it right now.

I can go on 4chan right and say its real. It is a anonymous message board for a reason.

If he puts in enough of his people he can control resources can't he?

Pompeo, who is one of his stooges is having his confirmation hearing to lead the CIA at this moment. This is a man who recently tweeted a link to wiki leaks as proof of something or the other related to Clinton e-mail details.

There is definitely a significant portion of very active users believing it's from 4chan on the internet right now on very different sites. We really live in interesting times.

Regardless, it's being used as a smoking gun for people trying to discredit these leaks, and people are posting it over and over despite it being debunked more than a full day ago. It's being used to spread misinformation and muddy the waters.

Outside of the people posting it with malicious intent (most people posting it), it allows people who voted from Trump to instantly stop paying attention to the story because it gives them an excuse to believe that they didn't vote for a traitor.

This is common in alt-right "Internet activism." One need only look at GG and KiA to see what happens when a whole lot of people convince themselves that they are influencing things happening around them by connecting the dots to things outside their control that probably had little or nothing to do with them. Trump does it on a wider scale.

Don't get me wrong, he can certainly shake things up, but unless he is getting rid of Comey the FBI will continue to chug on as it has been. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is anyone's guess. I don't think Comey is so partisan to cover up treason, but then again he's been a major fuckwit already so who knows.

If Trump does tried to shake things up and oust anyone not loyal to him, I suspect we will start getting even more leaks from various anonymous sources.

yeah, saw also quite a lot of people here in germany thinking the 4chan hoax is real. Just gave up discussing with them.

Edit: Between assuming that everybody with a more conservative opinion is just someone from that Voat board with an alt account and the assumption that everybody who's not sold on the Trump/Russia shit is just a paid Russian troll, NeoGAF is getting very difficult and annoying to navigate in recent weeks.

"Getting"? Its the Russians now, last week was the alt-right, and before that Gamergate and so on and so forth.

Oh, yeah, it's totally harmful. No denying that. I'm more talking about the spread of an idea through internet culture and people might be attributing more to malice than they should.

Not trying to put /pol/ under a good light either. They're unforgivably awful and make the spread of misinformation much worse, both unintentionally and intentionally.

This agencies are not just one people and one agency, even if this is a Trump appointed staff member, they will either let the investigation continue or try to stall it or shut it down, if he does the latter once he is replaced and if something is found then he could be charged for obstruction. So I highly doubt this guy will put his neck on the line for someone that might have committed Treason against the USA.

What this is, is Trump twisting words to what he wants to people to think someone said.

If you look what both sides say, it's clear it was the US Intel saying it wasn't sourced from them... which we already knew.

The findings were solid enough to go to print with and that's definitely something.

It should be noted that the server communication stuff came out around the same time as the mother jones stuff. The MJ article has come back around to prominence. I am waiting for the slate server stuff to come back around.

Pompeo is certainly disturbing at the very least. He's described politics as “a never-ending struggle … until the rapture.” It seems his appointment is to ensure the CIA focuses on threats to Christianity (Islamic extremism) rather than Russian threats.

Unrelated fun fact: My friend was texting me while eating at a place showing a story about how the leaks are fake poopoo made by 4Chan on the news. As she got up to leave the guy most intently paying attention to the story whistled at her and asked her "What can them thighs do?" so, hey, that's nice.

Clearly he told Trump that in private because if he publicly admitted this was a nonstory it would uhhhh

Set everything back to normal?

(Not American here) Is there any chance this blows over by the inauguration in the same vein as other 24h news cycle stories? I would worry that some of the pressure would come off if the official word is that it's still being investigated.

Depends on what happens after the entire House is briefed tomorrow and how Republicans react.

I don't think it'll go away, at any rate. It'll always be there, a spectre over the Trump administration.

I think it has less of a chance of happening because CNN is usually the one to throw away the old story for a new one, and this time around the story is "Trump says CNN is fake news and should not be trusted".

Although if there's no new info that would hurt obviously.

It's been a couple of days now, why hasn't the internet found out more about the lawyer's activities in Europe? 400lb hackers should have been able to check itineraries and rental car records by now. Maybe not put him directly in Prague, but off the grid for a day or two while in Italy or whatever should be enough.

Watching CNN, they seem to be backing away from the story a bit, they may feel it looks bad after other outlets explained why they didn't publish it.

They're already talking about other things and going back to why Trump won. During last night's town hall, Van Jones took a moment to say liberals should stop hanging onto this story because it only helps the Kremlin (I hope he only meant for now)

I think if nothing comes out before the inauguration, it's over.

IMO the only good that can come out of this debacle of the past year is America can no longer claim to be the higher moral ground to the world . Welcome to politics and pettiness. And complications and no clear answers. :). At least hopefully now the world fucked as it is due to America being the one superpower can realize it's not some super moral generally right with a few flaws amazing person . Humanity :) it's okay were all humans we all fuck up we work together it's not the end of the world if someone does something stupid .

The intelligence services have had months to try and tie Trump to these claims, so I wouldn't be optimistic just because they've leaked. By all means, it gets the fire going even stronger, but you cannot just magic up evidence/ties.

Sure some investigations can take months if not years, but given the seriousness of everything outside of pissing on a bed, they only need to tie him to one provable accusation and he's toast.

The tape is almost impossible to get. The grand prize would be confirming any of what's in the papers, do that and you win.
I dont know...I've read some twitter folks who said they saw it. They could be lying of course, but this was before we even knew tapes existed.

Yeah, we need to keep in mind that much of what is now occuring is only recent. Supposedly some fisa warrants were approved as recently as mid-October. These things take time.

I don't doubt effort is going in, but I don't doubt effort was going in previously. Not many people like Trump and can you imagine being in intelligence and having that dossier dumped on you last October/November?

The issue remains it's not a case of trying hard and putting in the effort. If no evidence exists feelings don't matter. You can't wish someone into prison. They need evidence and all the constant remarks about tapes and video/audio recordings aren't very reassuring if the intelligence services of all of America cannot confirm they exist, but apparently people on Twitter can.

That is correct, but some of these claims are that serious you'd think toppling Trump wouldn't be difficult.

How long do you think it takes for things like this to actually move? It isn't fast, let me tell you that much.

If you're going to be taking down the PEOTUS/POTUS, you need a fucking bulletproof case.

I mean, if they proved the pissing, man, bulletproof :p You are right though.
