Resident Evil: Requiem is pretty much what RE: Dash (1997) was supposed to be.

Dash was a semi-sequel to the first Resident Evil, planned to revisit the Spencer mansion 3 years after the events of the original game, and what has remained of the mansion was to be taken over by irregular mutants from the surrounding forest such as giant spiders and lizards.

However, the game was quickly abandoned in order to focus on Resident Evil 2. The initial idea was revisited several more times (including plans to be a bonus campaign for the Saturn port), but never came to fruition.

Probably until now, and unlike the original idea, on a much larger scale?

The Spencer mansion was supposed to have another lab, deeper down which was never found by Jill or Chris. Some concept art from that time has survived

Resident Evil has to be the only series that goes through a change on every release.
Yup.

It's quite fascinating going through each cancelled or rebooted RE project.

What's makes Dash even more special, is that (technically) it's the first cancelled Resident Evil game ever, predating even the initial version of 2.

I really enjoy the idea of 'going back' to something that was destroyed or dead, in a sequel game.

I'll always remember there was an eerie tension when first landing on Zebes again in Super Metroid. You're following Ridley through space, who just slaughtered an entire space station, and you suddenly recognize the name of the planet he's taking you to, as this theme plays:

You go in, thunder crackling, dead silence besides the tense music, and as you dive deeper you're wondering to yourself '...but I killed Mother Brain already' as you don't know what to expect next:

It was that tension, mixed with isolation and the horror of familiar location suddenly feeling unknown and even more uninviting than last time, that set the tone.

It's the type of tension that could easily be matched in this new RE game.
