Resistance 3 | Review Thread [Update 2: Reviews Coming In]

Garnett tweeting that it was the best PS3 shooter. I find I go with him more often than not. (except with Catherine)

Is it safe to assume he means it's the best PS3-exclusive shooter?

That was such an uninformative review and the complaints seem really unsubstantiated.
Unsubstantiated? He listed his complaints in each category:

Graphics:
Bland environments that don’t capture the atmosphere of the first game or the scale of Resistance 2’s larger battles

Sound:
Guns don’t feel like they have much weight, and the soundtrack is forgettable

Playability:
Controlling Joe is never much of an issue, but getting enemy AI to acknowledge your existence can be troublesome

Wait till we play it before criticizing him.

Unsubstantiated doesn't mean that he didn't say what the complaints were, it means that the detail to support them was lacking. I just feel like more reviewers need to take the time to explain why they didn't like certain aspects of a game instead of just tossing the complaints out with little or nothing to support them.

The review was too short and just generally lacking in detail.

This really is a strange one, R2 was loved by the press and 'hated' on by the core fan base and now it seems that the fans are loving R3 but reviewers are being negative on R3, Insomniac really can't please both sides of the camp can they?

Noway on Gods earth should R2 end up being the highest rated out of the franchise but perhaps in hindsight R2's design choices weren't so bad after all, I remember at the time saying that outside of the core fan base it seemed to be well received, most of my 'non-nerdy' friends loved R2 but then they are big Cod fans also, they appeased the 'casual' shooter audience with R2 which was financially beneficial, just hope that R3 sells well for them.

Not really seen much negative at all really, sure they cried for innovation and that garbage G4tv review, but other than its looking good.

OH wow, saw the Game Informer review of 7.0 in the R3 |OT| and though bad things.

These are all high numbers here. What's doubly impressive is the fact that this comes off the heels of R2, which was deemed to be a pretty disappointing effort.

Interest rising....

It's really not that different on Metacritic

Resistance 1 - 86

Resistance 2 - 87

Resistance 3 - 84

All in the mid 8 range. So it's not that inconsistent.

ok ok, I'm exaggerating a little, there are good reviews out there and atm overall reception seems good but I still feel that there are negative undertones, I don't know, it's just after the high R2 scores you'd expect a warmer reception, it seems logical to me.

First review that falls in line of what I saw so saw and played so far of the game.

BTW I love that the graphics are rated high although it is running in sub-HD. Am I the only one who is this sensitive to this stuff? I think it makes the game look horrible.

Argh sub HD really damn!

I think it's a lot tougher to impress in 2011 than it was in 2008. The press is much more focused on innovation now and there have been a lot of great shooters between '08 and the present.

Can I quote you on that once MW3 is out? ;)

If it is, it'll be lost on most. I'd much rather have the smooth framerate, the lighting and amazing particle effects (some of the explosions are staggering) than a few horizontal lines.

That's not really a fair comparison until we get more reviews in for R3, and lets be fair, usually the metacritic rating for a game drops when that happens.

Most likely. Doubt it means best shooter available on the system. I'll go check.

Birthday and Resistance 3 complete. Already late for bed so review will have to wait but don't hesitate; it is the best PS3 shooter to date

I guess all the reviewers have magic TVs with amazing scalers which make the game not look blurry.

Resistance is a B tier shooter and always will be one. 3 is no different.

I'm not saying it's not blurry (in places) - I'm saying the tradeoff is more than worth it.

In the eyes of the press a game like MW3 will probably be "innovative." There are new killstreaks, for crying out loud!

Point taken, though. For every game that is hit with negative remarks because of its lack of innovation there is a Call of Duty to make up for it.

I guess Destuctoid will be up sometime this week
Wondering where our Resistance 3 review is? Blame me if you'd like -- the online pass required to test the game's multiplayer modes hadn't been activated while I was reviewing the game. Sony did provide a way for us to test the modes in multiplayer sessions on our non-retail PS3 units, but I've opted to wait so I can play with the public. I've completed the single-player campaign (it's excellent, although short), but will be waiting to spend some time with the multiplayer before I give my final verdict.

Exactly, the beta was stunning in places, aside from the resolution it really is a good looking game.

I actually enjoyed what I played of multiplayer and didn't feel like the drop in player count affected the game negatively. The only beef I had was that some of the animation just didn't feel or look that smooth (climbing up ladders especially). I'll probably try and pick this one up on the cheap down the road.

Did Morgan Webb really say in her review that Resistance 3 shouldn't have had online multiplayer and then gave it a perfect score anyway? She also seemed to think that almost everyone was interested in the game solely for the single player. Not as insane as the Sessler thing where he said he thought Call of Duty would sell almost as much without online multiplayer. Still, G4's anti-everything games kick is pretty hilarious. They hate everything other than single-players shooters, complain about everything, and then complain about complainers.

its funny, based on Metacritic, its the worst game in the series facepalm.gif

Not enough reviews, and few 7 scores can really drag down the Metacritic score early on.

I don't agree as long as it is as blurry as this game. The beta seemed to me to be as bad as Black Ops on the PS3.

How does it compare to the mp beta?

I only found it less than sharp in one particular bit. And coming from the earlier build I was looking out for it.

Seriously, if you're counting pixels you're doing it wrong - there are Chimera to shoot.
