Every time is see the title for this thread I laugh.
They were big ugly crocodiles. And those too were alien to Donkey Kong at the time, who spent most of his time sitting at the top of a red construction girder throwing barrels at a fat plumber. Change is a good thing.
ahaha... you are right. I like your comment. Still, dck is to dk what super mario is to mario. Is the main series now. So, its ok to have goombas, koopas, ... but we dont care about kremlings? Another thing, i loved kremlings when i was a little kid but i didnt care too much about goombas. Maybe is nostalgia but though that kremlings had presonality, goombas didnt. I also though that retro nor using kremlings was a HUGE reason for beeing disapointed, maybe is just me?
AMBIENTATION IS NOT A WORD
DKC2 is one of my favorite SNES games.
DKCR >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> DKC2. Everything-wise. But that's just me.

I'd give DKC2 the edge in bonus rooms (probably my biggest disappointment about DKCR and DKCR2), other hidden secrets, level variety, and animal buddies.
But DKCR kicks its ass in terms of level design. I just wish they handled the other stuff.
The bonus rooms in DKCR2 look to be a huge improvement over the first game at least.
They are, but I still feel like they are missing that spark of uniqueness that I can't define.

I would say kremlings rank pretty low on the who gives a shit villain mario list.
Down there with captain syrup.

I think I know what you mean. In DKC2, bonus rooms were rarely similar. They all had a unique aspect and were designed to incorporate some of the aesthetics of the level you were playing. I don't know about DKCR2, but in DKCR a lot of the bonus rooms were similar so you weren't really challenged since you sort of had expectations of what to expect out of them. The backgrounds were all the same in DKCR, as far as I remember.
Controls, well, I'm playing the 3DS version which is a big improvement over the Wii version. Music... well, I think I might give music to DKC2, but I like DKCR's music too.Even music and controls? C'mon man, that's a bit much, you don't have to overcompensate with the inequality there
One of. Not my favorite SNES game.I fail to believe that DKC2 is you're favorite SNES game. Music was way superior in DKC2 because it wasn't remixed songs from the first game.
I know! But DKCR kicks its ass in terms of level design.

I agree DKCR was just as great as the old DKC games with the exception of the great david wise soundtrack which DKCRS music couldnt topple. One thing I have to agree with: The bonus levels were better in the SNES games. You also had more animal buddies to ride on. The music is still unmatched to this day, too.
DKC 1 - 3 is just such a great series. One of the best games Rare - in their prime time - have ever created.
One, therefore, couldn't give more credit to Retro for bringing that DKC IP back to life - in a GLORIOUS way!!!
I mean, how talented, how great of developer do you have to be to match the original series' greatness. DKCR for Wii is a gameplay monster. I don't exaggerate when I say its leveldesign, gameplay mechanics and overall pacing is genius . While playin it, I had many "wow, that's sooo good/that's sooo smart/that's sooo awesome" moments ONLY from gameplay. It's really something I haven't felt in YEARS. So IMHO Retro deserves all the praise they can get and people should be really thankful.
Thats why I'm so happy that we're getting a sequel. And now that David Wise is back, the series might even surpass its prequels in quality.
ha man this thread still exists, kind of embarrassing to read weeks lat-

huh
I know that nostalgia is the strongest thing ever but... how can people defent dkcr enemies?... where the kremlings love?...
EDIT: After reading the interview I think I'm less excited about this game. It seems like the newest part of this game is that it's in HD. I don't really care if studios want to continue working on the same IP, but I don't want an expansion pack of the last game for $60. This kind of seems like it could've been a new themed level pack a la New Super Luigi U. I dunno, just my $0.02 on it, I guess.
"They were what I saw as a kid, so they must be epic."This is a great example of being blinded by nostalgia. I'm not even going to expand on the fact that there's nothing remarkable about DKC trilogy enemy designs (in fact I find them awful) because that's subjective, but enemies out of place? The tikis are tribal masks, they're pretty much at home in a jungle, they make as much sense as crocodiles. Same goes for the rest of the enemies and bosses, they're animals, what's so out of place about that? And what the hell was "epic" about DKCs enemies?
"They were what I saw as a kid, so they must be epic."
I think the Kremlings were better enemies than the tikis because they had more personality in their foot-soldiers, but only a mindless nostalgiac would conclude that Donkey Kong Country Returns was a bad game because of this.
It's like the inverse of Metroid Other M, where people defended a bad game because "It looks like Super Metroid."
I have no idea what you're trying to communicate here.Kremlings were just plain bad design. If the Kremlings had been created for Returns, there would be no end to the criticism - people would be totally like "omg wat they're just like mentally challenged crocodiles, tell you what, back in my day yadda yadda...". If anyone can't see this, they're lying to themselves.
Other M's "ambitions" were doing what every other AAA linear cinematic game was doing and then slapping the Metroid title on it.And people defend Other M because it's a good game that actually had some ambitions and tried to do things differently.
Aren't Retro the Metroid developers? Does this mean no new Metroid game is planned? Is Samus dead? Is she dead? Buried six feet under the ground?
It's okay Retro, you died after Metroid Prime ended. It's all downhill from there anyway.
Other M's "ambitions" were doing what every other AAA linear cinematic game was doing and then slapping the Metroid title on it.

I can't believe people are still upset about this. Almost every creative force behind Metroid Prime has left the company. They aren't interested in more Prime, and they have said as much. Let it go.
On the other hand, DKCR is the best game in the series by a mile and one of the toughest traditional platformers from this gen. I don't understand what anyone is complaining about. The DKC2 nostalgia is over the top. It's a good game but not even in the same league as DKCR, save for the music.
