I'm not saying the console itself would have issues running games. But look at how often games are released broken. To me adding an additional version of the game that only runs on a small subset of one of the current consoles, just seems like a disaster.

Even with the VR stuff it's kind of BS. I own a PS4, if I buy a 400 dollar VR headset that PS4 better be able to play it and play it well. If you need a newer PS4 to run VR games properly than it will be DOA. If you don't need it, than spend more time optimizing for the current hardware.
 
Well I hope they are making a Soul Sacrifice and/or Freedom Wars game for PS4 then, it would be a pity to let those IPs die.

If I didn't have a PS4, then the idea of a High Performance PS4 would've been the perfect opportunity to get the console. However, since I already own one, I would feel sort of second-class if they released one.

I don't think it's happening though. He said it was possible in theory but many things are.

I don't understand this attitude. Why would an high-performance PS4 go "against the entire concept" any more than does marketing the PS4 and the PS3 at the same time?

And, what about it would "suck" for PS4 users? I'm a PS4 user and I would love the option of a performance-enhancement. And, if I didn't want to pay for it (or couldn't afford to), I would continue to enjoy my existing PS4, content in the knowledge that others had the opportunity to enjoy the high-performance machine and I may yet some day join them.

What's the downside?
 
If it just doesn't make sense price wise to keep the current PS4 out there when you can't lower the price much yet can get exponentially faster components for little more than fair enough. Depending on how long that takes though it'd make more sense to just release a next gen platform with enhanced BC.

. . . Which should be the ideal honestly.
 
Wouldn't a high performance PS4 fragment the market? Not to mention piss of many people, same goes for Xbox owners. Poor idea.
 
Developers probably don't want to optimize multiple builds for each console.

First party abandoning Vita is nothing new but it's a black eye for Sony's Worldwide Studios. They've had two platforms with underwhelming support going on two years. Contrast that with Nintendo, where even if support for one platform is bare, the other has a great year and vice versa.

I think the current ps4 BARELY has the muscle to do what they want for Morpheus. It will work but a system with better specs will run it better. So, they release Morpheus and it does work but then they release the upgraded ps4 and it runs even better. People will buy it. It's just like definitive editions of games. People owned a ps3 and bought a game. Sony releases a better system (ps4) and the same game comes out but is "better".

Granted, there was a lot more time between the ps3 release and the PS4 but the point remains. VR is in for the long haul. In a few years people will be looking to upgrade, anyway.

Well Sony is also being super shady over whether or not my X850C is going to support HDR over HDMI so it's pretty fitting that my PS4 is in the same boat.

yeah I'm thinking Sony realized that the current PS4 hardware isn't ideal for running VR games but they would like to keep the PS4 brand going instead of forcing a PS5 launch for Playstation VR
 
At the very least they should be looking to boost the spec of Remote Play/Live streaming up to 1080p60 with decent bitrates of 16-32Mbps as more ISP's upgrade to enable the upload bandwidth. Remote Play's proprietary so they can use whatever custom codec gives the best low-latency/quality balance but H.265 would be fantastic for live streaming with lower upload bandwidth requirements. Services like YouTube can do the hard work transcoding to formats each viewer can handle.

Boost to the secondary custom chip design and 256MB DDR3. Maybe app multitasking can be expanded.

802.11ac, full HDMI 2.x certification (even if the current chipset supports the major 2.0 features), if adaptive sync isn't included in the HDMI spec in time, a DisplayPort or Digital Multi A/V connection would be great.

These are all things that could be added relatively cheaply in a PS4 super slim though.


Designing a PS4K with boosted main APU and memory bandwidth, but still running the same game software (developers would only need to provide higher res raster UI art for full 4K support) would be a huge engineering task.
 
I wouldn't mind a PS4 that can play all games not on PC at 1080p 60FPS, like Uncharted 4, Final Fantasy XV and Bloodborne 2. Wouldn't mind at all.
 
This sounds like a terrible move, like SEGA circa 1994-tier of awful. But at least their extreme risks were due to trying to topple Nintendo's near monopoly so they had to come up with (mostly bad) ways of doing so.

PS4 is already on top...don't fuck it up!

Is there really any legitimate reason to be pissed off by the availability of a higher-end console? Would it be reasonable to complain if your car manufacturer introduced a model that costs more than your car? Why be pissed at an even better PS4?

... It's an even better PS4!
 
Always thought it would be hard for consoles to do VR. Probably that and because they are x86 PCs backwards compatibility must be a lot easier so it's very tempting.

Funny how last gen went on so long and this gen feels like it was too early. It's like the beta test generation. At the wrong time CPUs, GPUs, RAM. All a bit bridging the gap and so so. Nintendo might just arrive at right time on upwards new curve.

No dual antennas in this either Sony.

Its a great indicator that SCE still has some of those dumbfuck "dont really understand press/videogames" people in high up positions. Nepotism or something at work probs.

Leading into a holiday season and saying "oh hey, maybe there'll be a better console down the track" is pretty much the one thing you do not do as a company that sells things for money. ESPECIALLY when its just a non entity idea that isnt even going to happen.
 
I'll buy a PS4 Slim that drops fewer frames. All you guys who think this is a terrible idea can keep your standard PS4 and play your games just fine. Don't deny me my upclocked Slim because you assume he's talking about a god damn PS5.

He didn't say that. He was asked if something like that was possible and he said it was while pointing out that it's not something that's actually in development. His comment is far more about how much flexibility X86 gives them in comparison to the incredibly rigid CELL than about an actual upgraded PS4.
 
I hope it was just some translation error or not making himself clear when he said high performance. Maybe he was referring to an edition that supports Ultra HD Blu-ray?
 
High performance PS4? I wonder if we are going to get more powerful versions of current systems more often now instead of massive hardware changes every 5-7 years. While I'm not excited about the idea, it's something that would need to happen to keep consoles relevant when gaming PCs are becoming more popular and easily outpace current gen consoles in terms of power.

Either they take a big loss or sell a high-power, advanced console that could frog leap past current PC specs, or incremental releases every 3 years.

It's been abandoned by Sony for almost a year at this point. I think the last first party game to come out was Freedom Wars. At least we'll still have VNs, ecchi games, and PSOne/PSP games to tide us Vita owners for a long while.

It depends on who they target with it. If I had to guess, the current ps4 may not be suited to 4k and/or 4k protected content streaming and/or vr. If so, and if Sony wants a presence in those markets, a revision will have to come. I'd also think that traditional vg performance would not change between old and new consoles despite the new console being different.
 
the fuck? What a weird thought from Sony, they currently have the most powerful console on offer, are they worried about the NX Power performance or that Russian DX12 performance rumour? I don't want to buy consoles every three years.

But from what I remember both console makers have patents relating to power scalable consoles bundles. So maybe this was in Sony and Microsoft's pipeline :(
 
A bit sad really that they can't be bothered to make any games at all for the Vita. Some small indielike game, just to give the Sonyfans a little something, would be nice.
