SDCC: Last of Us movie announced.

Holy shit, Joel!

I just watched Prisoners for the first time and Hugh Jackman 100% gets my vote! Brilliant film, and an excellent portrayal of a man who will "do what must be done".

Told you so.

This thread makes me want to watch prisoners

Do it. The film will wreck your nerves more than any horror movie ever did. There's a good five minutes towards the end of the film where I was shaking; literally. I just could not take it anymore.

I dont know if this has already been pointed out, but to quote myself from another part of the internet;

Maisie Williams is currently 17 years old. This movie apparently wont be out “for years”. She’s ok as a 13 year old in GoT right now, but come on.
I really doubt it’ll pass in 5 more years.

Her age can always be upped to 16. What matters is that she's a teenager who's not yet an adult. Her being 14 over 16 does not add anything, really. If upping the character's age to 16 enables the producers to select an actress from a bigger pool of potentials, then they should do it. 17 may be too close to 18, but 16 would be fine.

All of you people posting pics of actors should be worrying about directors instead.

Denis Villeneuve

Y'all need to watch Incendies.

I'm surprised only one persons mentioned Viggo Mortenson because of his performance in The Road

Well he already did the better version of this movie.

TLoU is still interesting to me as a film, because unlike The Road you have a charismatic young person and the fungi-monsters... tonally it'll be waaaaay different. Its own thing.

But yeah The Road is a thing that exists and imo was really well done. Viggo killed it in that. Even though these are different projects, they are too close regarding the Joel/The Man characters. He already did that. Let someone else try and top him. because right now he already holds the belt for post apocalyptic survivor broken carer-for protector badass dirty guy.

Told you so.

Thanks for the suggestion. I really enjoyed it.

The Last of Us / Prisoners spoilers ahead...
The whole film felt like an extended version of the Winter chapter from TLOU, specifically the part without clickers where Joel tortures the guy and searches to find Ellie. The Father/Daughter bond felt very real. They even had deer hunting and survival.

I'm surprised it took this long. The script is essentially written.

Also Hugh Jackman is a pretty inspired choice for Joel. I do think for the other parts they should just bring back the character actors since they look exactly like their counterparts. I can see why doing that with Joel and Ellie is a problem of course.

Now go watch Incendies, Denis Villeneuve's previous film. It will haunt you. He has my vote for director.

Wait is Hugh Jackman confirmed?

No. It's pure speculation from us.

Raimi being tied to the film has me feeling a bit more relaxed. Surprised him and sony are still on good terms after the political back and forth on spidey 3 direction

I don't think TLOU has a particularly strong story. It actually seems quite generic to me. Where it excelled was its storytelling. And that's by video game standards, not movie standards.

Being directed by a B-tier/horror movie director doesn't sound like a great choice either, unless that's the kind of movie y'all want it to be? I know some people like that B-tier stuff, but its not my thing.

Producer =/= Director.

Neil is choosing the director/cast, and they haven't decided yet. Stuff is pretty early in pre-production.

Who said he's casting? That's a director's job, is he also deciding blocking and framing while he's at it?

I'm not sure if they're specifically picking the cast, but ND have been given a lot of power in terms of shaping the movie

Druckmann and Naughty Dog had some important questions when making the deal: Can we write it? Can we have final say on casting, and on the director? The answer to all of these was yes, so they were effectively “given the keys to the kingdom” — or, better, they were able to retain the keys to the kingdom. And so, says Druckmann, “it’s on us to not make it suck.”

The storytelling was much better than the blockbuster shit that we get in hollywood such as Pacific Rim, Godzilla, Transformers etc.. Damn I dont think anyone can say with a straight face that the storytelling and the acting in any of these movies was better than TLOU. Yet these movies earn millions so I am not sure why TLOU will be any more generic than the above movies.

I don't rate movies based on how much money they make.

TLOU is a competent story but it isn't anything to write home about. It's your standard adult protects child and they live in a world where human civilization has collapsed. A friend and I played it together. We couldn't understand what was so important then I realized it had something very important to cover up the flaws with: sentimentality.

The only way this story will survive the movie critic ringer is if it gets a decent rewrite. Which it obviously will.

This should be CG.

Fuck live action video game movies. There has literally never been a good one.

What exactly would be the point of a CG TLoU movie? You'd just have a movie where they were trying to make CG look like real actors instead of actually using real actors. The game itself is fairly grounded, and the runners and clickers can easily be recreated through costumes and makeup, so there really isn't any benefit to going the CG route.

I'm surprised they said nothing's been decided for Ellie, but they also were considering having Maisie sit in on the panel with them. That seems very contradictory.

The vibe I got was that Maisie is really, really into portraying the role, and Neil would like it to be that way to, but realised that there's a huge, huge difference between taking someone out front and center (as if confirming it) as opposed to only having non-committal, no signatures attached discussions.

There's probably a lot of logistical groundswork that need to take place before they sign stars towards an unconfirmed work schedule.

Funny, he's also in The Road.

I've just finished watching the panel. I think it's kind of comforting that Druckmann knows all game adaptations are garbage, but then why risk it anyway? It's also interesting to hear him talk about how he wants this to be the first good one, while also mentioning that an UC film is coming before it. I wonder if he (or ND at large) are a little burnt by not having creative control of the film. The game series is his now, so presumably he'd want the film too.

Don't much care who plays Joel as long as we have music from Gustavo Santaolalla and it's directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Hugh would be my pick, though, and would round out my dream team for this movie.

Guy Pearce seems like an actor in the realm of possibility... you know... like someone they might actually be able to get. He seems like right on the line of what's possible for a thing like this.

Personally, I say get Mel Gibson. lol.

And let him direct it.

David to be Jewish, confirmed.

They do have creative control over the film. They have final say on pretty much everything, according to Druckman from Comic-con.

When did he say that? He certainly didn't in the panel.

That is of course presuming you aren't mistakenly talking about TLoU instead of Uncharted...

Honestly, i dont think the dynamic would be the same between the characters if Ellie was past puberty. Mostly because Joel's real daughter was younger than Ellie already, ageing Ellie would just dig a deeper divide and Joel projecting the memory of his daughter on to her would make less sense.

13 year olds still need to be taken care of, 16 year olds a lot less. Look at it this way, the world Ellie lives in makes her act older than her age, this is something the devs have said. Add another 3 years to her age and we can assume she'd act even older, Joel would just hand her a bag and tell her to go meet the FireFlys on her own.
