Where did you buy it? I'd buy it but not for 50-60$

On ebay, without even hunting for it. I just took the cheapest complete one I found on that day, which was sold $45,00 AUD. With shipping to Europe (+$7) I paid a total of €38,18. A bit expensive considering their retail price (¥2500) but still worth it like the rest of the collection.

add Outrunners to that list and done!

Wait! There's still a lot of SEGA goodness that deserves to be ported :)

How about A.B. Cop?

I've never played it, but it looks quite awesome: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sKIuPzofmTI

I'd also love to play the arcade version of Alien Storm. Those shooting gallery levels would look nice in 3D!

The sale is PAL-only.

Everything but Altered Beast is based on the arcade version.

You can buy it and several other PS2 Sega Ages releases for cheap on JP PSN.

yes it is those + hang-on and Galaxy force II (although it uses PS2 sprites)

What does the Difficulty setting do in Out Run? Less cars on the road?

Also how many times can you crash or spinout per stage and still make it to the end (on default settings)?

Nah,, you can definitely spin out once or twice on some stages. But if you spin out repeatedly on every stage eventually you won't have enough time to complete the entire course. I think you can spin out at least twice and still have enough time to beat the early stages, but more than twice will be an issue.

What if you crash?

Insane For Sony
I'm contemplating buying a 3DS for this OutRun. I tried the New 3DS XL the other day and the pixel size on it is unbearable to me. Zelda game had pixel shimmer from hell that I've not seen since PS1 days. I remember playing Luigi Mansion on old 3DS (smaller one) and that looked much better than Zelda on new XL. I attribute that in good part to the fact that pixels on XL are so huge.

I'm wondering now if I should import New 3DS and OutRun (where should I import from?) or just get XL locally and not worry about it since OutRun is a retro game that's supposed to have giant pixels anyway. Also worth noting that to me XL looks and feels very cheap, vs. smaller 3DS which definitely feels more premium.

The large pixels don't bother me at all, I definitely prefer the larger screen over the smaller one (I had both, sold the original 3DS and kept the XL). And I think you'll get used to it quickly if you get an XL, even if you hate it initially. Have you seen this thread? It seems that there are different types of screens used in the New XLs, and I don't think all of them suffer from the "pixel shimmer", unfortunately there is no way of knowing which one you get before trying it. If you can make the store let you open the box and turn it on before you buy it (or if it has a good return policy), that might help.

I think the shimmer was really due to non-existent texture filtering on ground textures in Zelda to be honest. But the huge pixels exaggerated the problem.

lol, looking at your link, it looks like you're screwed either way in some way when going with XL in terms of screen quality. Either scanline flicker on IPS or more washed out image/bad looking 3D on an angle with TN screen.

The spin-out animation's not quite as long as the crash one, but it's mostly akin IMO, so I'd avoid doing that more than twice if preventable. Almost spinning out before downshifting to regain control and save your velocity, though, is not a biggie on time. I do that every now and then, doesn't really fuck up my runs unless I've crashed/spun-out often to begin with.

Yeah it's a crapshoot. I was thinking about getting the new XL but after that thread my interest plummeted. smh @ Nintendo...

Since when do people play their 3DSs at 90 degree angles? Whislt not perfect, these issues certainly aren't deal breakers. The New 3DSs have some of best screens Nintendo has ever used in a handheld.

The obsession with how their screens look at extreme angles in that thread is silly, but other issues are legit concerns for some people (not knowing which screen type you'll get, one type having worse eye tracking in 3D, another having crushed blacks and dithering, etc.)

The new 3DS is a marginal and non-essential upgrade from previous models, so it's not going to take much to convince me that my old XL is good enough and that I should spend my limited money on something else. And Nintendo's shoddy quality testing did just that for me.

Like I said before, what would eventually push me to buy the New 3DS is if Sega released 3D Classics that were exclusive to the new hardware. It's ironic that Nintendo couldn't sell me on their hardware (yet), but Sega could.

I'm really enjoying these interviews on Sega's blog. I had no idea there was a hidden third background in Galaxy Force II.

And I still can't decide what my favourite song in OutRun is... They are all perfect, even the new ones.

Seems like a good choice indeed! Only saw this game being played (on emulators) as well; never tried it in real life. It does look cool though!

Apart from that one, my no. 1 choice for a third wave would (still) be Turbo Outrun - Outrun's less talked about, even more Cannonball Run-esque sequel that was slightly different but also quite cool. It featured a F40, a white Porsche rival car that kept up with the player and things like weather effects that effected steering. It also *gasp* moved away from the multi-route system by going for a more linear but still as visually varied road trip across the States (which must have been the inspiration for Outrun 2006's added set of U.S. based courses as the original Outrun only took place in Europe just like Outrun 2 vanilla did).

I never managed to find Turbo Outrun in the wild either, but I'm sure it would make a great (and also technically doable) addition to this 3D series.

Edit: added some pics for good measure:

It looks bad in those screens to be honest. Would need to see it in motion to really judge though, but it looks sort of like a "B-movie" version or knockoff compared to the artistic calibre of the original Outrun or other Sega classics.

Or it could all be nostalgia talking (lack of in my case for OutRun Turbo).

Wow, thanks for the info y'all, I just bought all the sale items except Altered Beast and Ecoo. Even tempted by Altered Beast...

Hang On and Space Harrier, so good!

Is it just me or is the 3D effect in Super Hang On a bit...off?

The track looks great and really adds to the sense of speed, but the bikes seem to be floating just above the track which is really off putting. Love the game otherwise, and actually enjoy the tilt function a lot more than I thought I would.

Galaxy Force II on the other hand...holy mother fucking christ! I did not for a second think that the best 3D on the system would come from a ~25 year old game. Such a blast, had a massive grin on my face the whole time.

Yeah, Super Hang-On's got defective 3D, probably due to it being converted from the console-borne Vintage Collection's 3D mode without fine-tuning. I hardly notice it, but others have voice complaints in the past.

GFII da best. Meanwhile I'm nearly done with Fantasy Zone, just gotta figure out how to bait O-papa's last missile.

Man, Super Monaco GP.... loved it.

I won't be selfish to ask for a game I want, I just want to have a Wave 3! Please!!!!

Drop a heavy bomb on that little bastard. That's the only way I managed to do it!
I'll do that assuming I die at O-papa, have a life to spend, and got enough money to buy as many Heavy Bombs as possible. Otherwise, it's gonna be about snaking the missile and Twin Bomb-ing it.

Turbo OutRun isn't a bad choice, but it's not a better one than Racing Hero or Super Monaco GP or Power Drift.

For those of you who have the JPN version of 3D Fantasy Zone II, I'd love some impressions of the 3D effect if you could.

Ahh, that explains it.

Pity because everything else about the 3D classics is so bloody spot-on.

Puts Nintendo's efforts to shame.

Galaxy Force II what the fuck.

How is this the best use of 3D I have ever seen in any medium.

I said 'whoa' out loud, it's like I was a kid in an arcade back in the 80s having my mind blown.

I want 100 more games like this.

I played it while really stoned one night and I was literally saying "Wow!" out loud repeatedly the whole time. Haha. It was truly amazing.

Turbo Outrun was awful!

At least elaborate why, good sir/madam.

Not that your opinion can't be valid, but it would help to know why you feel this way. Seems like it's a common narrative about this game though - that it is inferior. Never really understood why, but then again, I've not played it that much and never on an actual cabinet. Is it the Turbo system that bothers you, the rival car, the lack of a multi-path system, or something else entirely?

Here is a honest review by Lazy Game Reviews that mentions the differences between this and the original and that shows the cabinet as well. Maybe it will convince you Turbo Outrun might be worth a look / port even without nostalgia (which I don't really have for it either)? It starts by showing original Outrun so you can compare both in motion as well.

No not Turbo OutRun.

This one!

Never played this game but I wouldn't mind its inclusion in a possible wave 3 either. Not over Turbo Outrun of course, but still.

Getting both would be ideal.

Any other classic Sega arcade games that haven't been brought up so far and that might deserve a slot in wave 3? Feel free to list your favorites and make a case for them, however obscure they are I'd say.
