Silent Hill 3 is TERRIFYING

I have not yet played the SH2 Remake but I did jump into the SH2 Enhanced Edition and loved it. SH1 I played twice before so that was fresh in my mind as well. SH3 and 4 I just happened to skip because at the time I was riding high on the RE titles so I decided to fix that wrong and actually complete the 4 best SH titles before I jumped into the remake. SH2 is considered by many the pinnacle of the franchise but honestly after finishing SH3, as much as its touted as a little bit more action-oriented, I found it absolutely way more terrifying than I did SH2. The enemies are more aggressive but more importantly, the whole vibe, ambient and those eerie sounds...jesus christ the game made me uncomfortable most of the playthrough. It feels so dreadful and uneasy especially when those sounds get turned up once you are in a room with enemies. I would also say the "other world" is even more sickening, bleeding walls, trasforming blood stains all over, much darker.

All to the point that I actually enjoyed SH2 with a bit of uneasiness while SH3 absolutely tripped me. I heard even worse for SH4 (in a good way) so I am looking forward to that playthrough. If we ever do get other remakes, Id love for them to remake 3 considering by everything I read about SH2R, they are capable to making it even more of a scary experience. Also I think the story in SH3 can kind of fill in some holes of SH1 so it wouldnt be a big deal even though it is a direct sequel. In the last chapter, they remade some areas from SH1 as well which look way better in general and more creepy than the first time around. SH2 was more depressing, SH3 is anything but comfortable :messenger_grinning_sweat: .

I haven't played 3. But I played a fair bit of 2 on my friends PS2. As a kid it was scary.

Of course anything scared me. Probably Because I wasn't allowed to watch or play horror media back then.

After I play 2 remake I'll probably go play 3.

All great games but I hated that SH3 was constantly noisy and throwing sounds left and right. I agree that it was creepier than all other entries but I had issues with its pacing.

Fantastic games.

I don’t want to read too much as I plan to play 3 after I finish 2EE, but I get the impression I’m going to have a good time.

3 was always applauded for its facial animation, so it will be good to see that in action

Dont worry, no spoilers in the text, but basically I found SH2 EE a walk in the park with slight discomfort while SH3 felt dread all the way through.

Silent Hill 3 was incredible for its time, also the soundtrack is mwah 😙🤌 (chefs kiss)

I agree its terrifying in some areas and the amusement park was creepy as hell.graphics were amazing too.

I think that SH 4 was one of the scariest of the series. That first person view in the room and checking your peep hole.(shudder)
Also some of the notes left around are pretty disturbing.

My favorite SH game (2 is close behind it). The ambience and scares are just at their peak, Heather is my favorite SH protagonist due to her unique personality and great character arc, the graphics are insanely-impressive for their time, the music is god-tier, etc.

Yeah, i remember it being scarier than 2. Especially the alternate hospital part.

Also, yeah, the sound is better in 3 (excluding the music). I never particularly liked the sound effects in 2, like the footsteps the enemies do sound way too loud and obnoxious. But i remember the howls of the dogs in 3 being terrifying. Peaking through the dark corridors and listening to these howls knowing some of them are lurking in some corner in a near distance is one of my favorite scary videogame moments.

Its an amazing game, I remember playing as a teenager, the part where you get the phone call and the guy starts singing happy birthday and I shat my pants. Absolutely incredible game and the sound in particular is terrific. I really hope we get a remake

For me it was the church part, once you go down into the pit. Tight corridors. loud earie sounds everywhere, bleeding walls, 2 rooms with almost no light, just your flashlight can make out the enemies inside. I was running for my life 24/7.

The weird enemies like the demon cock made it goofy to me.

P.S. Original Silent Hill and The Room have the best horror elements in my opinion.

For me... The best silent hill game.

But I never finish it
If you are on PC / steam deck, theres an "unofficial enhanced edition". Higher res textures and widescreen support which is what I played on my deck and it runs flawlessly. Only the menu is like 4:3 but the actual gamplay and graphics are boosted.

I got halfway through the SH2 remake and haven't booted it up in a few weeks. Ended up starting a new R4make run and man, I know James is supposed to be weaker, but the combat and locomotion difference between those two titles are staggering. I def think Bloober got some points awarded to them that should have gone to Epic's engine team with that release. It's still fine, hell good even. But the newness certainly worse off for me, much more so after putting a few hours into R4make after playing SH2R.

Hopefully they can refine that. I think you can still make James vulnerable while making it feel a whole lot better.

Silent Hill 3 was my first and only Silent Hill game and got it on discount in store during junior high. The game was extremely scary and disturbing and I was already used to other horror games like Resident Evil games already even at that age. None of them compared to the crazier horror that is Silent Hill 3.

For some reason I find the original SH to this day the most unsettling of the SH games. Something about the old graphics and the sound design.
I'm so grateful that there are many smaller devs who prioritize PS1 era, low-poly visuals, especially for horror games. So much of the "recipe" for fear is the unknown, and lower definition graphics are so harmonious with that essence.

It still is impressive to look at considering its age. I've played it on PS2 and PC many times but started it again around the time 2 Remake came out, just to try the over the shoulder mod that came out and it actually goes pretty well with the game.
