Silent Hill Downpour |OT| Rain, Rain, Go Away

I'm playing through the game right now (IMPRESSIVE, It's the modern Silent Hill I've always hoped for.. there was a sidequest in an apartment building that made me chill a little.. espectacular) and when I heard that song, I felt I was playing Silent Hill again, after 4 years. The whole soundtrack is GENIUS.

And if my opinion counts into something, the graphics ARE NICE, with a well calibrated TV you could appreciate the little details (there are insanely a lot). I think it's the most atmospheric game I've played since Arkham Asylum, and it's miles better, it could compete with bioshock.

And DAT ANTIALIASING

Atmosphere that can compete with Bioshock? God dammit. I told myself I'd wait for a price drop... This is gonna be a tough wait. If more positive impressions roll in, I'm probably gonna buckle :l

why don't you get silent hill 1-4 on pc?

I already have original copies of SH 1, 2 (the regular version lacking the bonus scenario etc.) and 3 for PS2, and 4 for PC. SH2 and 3 for PC are hard to come by, and fairly expensive. Besides, I just prefer to have them all for the same console.

Aren't the PC versions kind of finnicky with settings and hardware too? I remember buying SH2 for PC way back and having a hell of a time getting a controller to work with it.

I find it hard to believe you bought SH1 for PC as the first SH game was released only for the PS1 :p There was, however, an executable floating around that basically installed a pre-configured PS1 emulator + a SH1 disc image file, so that you could run SH1 on PCs. But yeah, SH2 and 3 are apparently a bit finnicky on certain setups.

Shit, that's some typo. I meant SH2, my bad. Editing noowww.

I think reviews are going to be all over the place. Really polarising stuff.

I personally believe we're going to get a lot of 7-8s with a few 9s and 6s tossed in. Silent Hill is always polarizing, and this game is very different than most games coming out these days and is much more old-school style. That's either going to be a plus or minus depending on who you're asking.

I may be wrong, but I distinctly remember SH2 getting overall worse reviews than SH1 upon release. It was a while before general consensus switched.

Are there any videos up showing the rain/downpour when just exploring the town? Is it just random when it begins to come down?

You're about correct, upon release it did worse.

Game Informer, since their review is the only main-stream review we currently have, gave Downpour a 7/10. It should be noted though that they also gave Silent Hill 1 and 2 a 7/10.

Their different critics, but Silent Hill 2 was polarizing at the time.

I'm watching the SH2 video review from Gamespot. The guy literally says (paraphrasing a bit obviously):

"Silent Hill 2 isn't as scary as the first one. The first one had this half-man, half-dog thing that would chase you through the mist... and it had this bark that would just set the hair on the back of your neck up. Silent Hill 2 doesn't really have any creatures that will chase you, the scares are more in the atmosphere."

So yeah, reviews and Silent Hill games, eh.

I wouldn't shock me if it got straight 6/7s given how hype driven and polish focused this industry has become. Doesn't matter if it's shallow, as long as it looks pretty and animates smoothly high reviews will follow. Hell just look at the REvelations review over at GT. They gave it a 8 in gameplay, but like a 9.0 overall because it looked pretty. I mean wtf is that man.

Nope, it wasn't a port, but a pre-configured PS1 emulator + SH1 image file ;)

Ah, I see.

Wow, listening to that podcast with the SH producer, and Homecoming could have been a LOT worse. Man, they really had no idea what they were doing.

After the disappointment of Homecoming i was very skeptical about this one, but all your impressions are making my interest raise. Hype!

Listening to the podcast now, and the original idea for Homecoming sounds like the biggest clusterfuck ever. Having Heather appear to team up with Alex, and at the end Josh would be fighting Alessa for control of the town, with a Super Saiyan battle (those are Hulett's actual words) taking place over Toluca Lake. Jesus. Double Helix apparently had no idea what they were doing. I'm glad Hulett told them there was nothing more to do with the Alessa story.

Edit: ahahaha, even Hulett got pissed by Double Helix shoehorning Pyramid Head into Homecoming.

I do not want to come off as port begging, however-

Homecoming's value was increased tenfold by PCs in all the right spots (environment textures, lighting, ambience). It would be really nice to see that again, which I believe a developer said would happen depending on the consumer reaction? Maybe Mary just told me that in a dream though.

Edit: And all of the discussion stemming from Double Helix is blowing my mind. And I thought there were glaring events in the finished game- jeeeeeez.

Homecoming already felt like fan fiction, so that... I cannot even comprehend that.

I used to defend Homecoming on here so much, but when I recently replayed it, I don't know. It's like I finally accepted that the game just isn't that good. I probably still like it more than some people, but the problems with the game seemed to stick out to me a lot more on the replay.

I don't think Shattered Memories is a good Silent Hill game, and it's far from being even remotely creepy let alone scary, but it's still just this really weird game with a few bright spots and a great ending. I think that's more than what I can say about Homecoming.

Homecoming's PC port remains kind of garbage. Maps and inventory items are still all distorted if you launch the game at anything other than 720p, and it took them so long to patch the broken lighting at launch that someone wrote an unofficial patch before they did. i'll never forget when i first picked up the PC version, and when Travis dropped Alex off in Shephards Glen, his skin was completely white, his hair was black and he looked like Toshio from the grudge. also, the coloured numbers that show up instead of the proper Xbox 360 pad button prompts still need to be fixed. like, at least make them the same colours even if you want to keep numbers for the buttons.

and yeah. wow at those plans for Homecoming.

In regards to Homecoming, I'm the opposite. I remember picking it up when you did the OT for it at release and totally hating it. However, I replayed it about a month ago and actually really enjoyed it. Granted, it's nothing compared to the Team Silent games and has a lot of garbage elements like the story, but I did enjoy running through it. Actually wandering around the town in heavy fog just felt right at times. I've started to weirdly view it as a separate thing from the other games, and as a sort of sequel to the film. In that way, I really don't mind it at all now.

Origins had a similar journey for me, where it took quiet a while for me to come round to it. Again, I hate the story and some of the other stuff in that one too, but both it and Homecoming have nice homage and atmospheric moments that I enjoy.

Shattered Memories is pretty weak to me, though. Poor gameplay, really overrated story and a shallow psychological system that Silent Hill 2 did better without needing to tout it as a selling point. Nothing in Shattered Memories has ever clicked for me.

I can see that. Again, I don't hate Homecoming at all and I would still defend parts of it but I guess some of the flaws just stuck out at me a lot more recently.

Agreed about Shattered Memories' story and psychological system. Incredibly shallow and inconsequential. I did like the ending but I recognize that that has something to do with the execution of the ending and the emotional strings that it pulled quite well.

Shattered Memories shouldn't have been called Silent Hill.

I liked its adventure mechanics and its attention to detail. Overall though the story wasnt very interesting.

The ending was the best part, simply cause it put a lot into perspective and was emotionally moving.

I guess its not a bad thing for the ending of a 6 hour game to be its best feature.

Would anyone be against the idea of a Silent Hill Community Thread? Every Silent Hill topic has been constantly derailed by the usual argument recently (myself doing so at times, so I'm guilty of it too), and with three releases for the series coming within the next month, it could get annoying.

If no one else wants to do one, I can throw up a rough thread tomorrow. It needs to have a good tagline though! "There was a series here, it's debatable now" or something.

'Quality games? They look like quality games to you?'

But yeah, I'd like a SH community thread. SH Historical Society.

Ok now you guys are really going way too far. Origins better than Silent Hill 4? Jesus God, GAF has gone mad!

This is my Silent Hill ranking list, taking into consideration the mystery, slickness, horror, vividness of the series.

SH2 - SH4 - SH1 - SH3 - Origins - Homecoming.

I have never played SM.

Origins isn't a buggy, broken mess with a second half dedicated to an escort mission with the worst a.i. imaginable.

It's random. Enemies do go around the town when it isn't raining, but when it starts raining they basically triple to quadruple themselves.

sounds... quite awesome.

i haven't followed this game much even though i consider myself a big fan of the series. all i remember is some trailer that looked kinda ridiculous and got a lot of hate from GAF, plus the Korn song (ugh)... but now things are different, the game actually turned out decent? i hope so! i've been aching for a horror game i can take seriously (Dead Space 2 didn't quite work, was fun though).

What bugs were in Silent Hill 4? How was Silent Hill 4 broken? I mean I played the game ages ago on the Ps2, but I never encountered any game breaking bugs, nor did I ever consider the game broken. You are using words that don't even apply to the game.

I can understand anyone having "issues" with escort missions, escorting Eileen wasn't something I had intentionally been looking forward to, but she never wandered, she never got stuck in geometry on the map and she was always right behind you to go through the doors/loading screens.

Its like we played entirely different games.

Well, as i said i've played just about an hour of Origins (not a great one, i might add) but in years of posting in dedicated forums and such, i can think i've heard near every possible combination of SH-preference-list, so i don't really care.
I think some can be considered objectively worst than others, for one reason or the other, but in the end, they're all different experiences and each one of us will go in searching for different, specific elements (therefore like one title over the other).
