I’ve got quite good at finding the buttons on my wheel but feel, the same with my button box. Plus there’s always CrewChief if all that’s too much (though tbh the skippy doesn’t need many buttons).

I only use a few buttons, mostly chat and vr centering etc. I haven’t really gotten into cars with drs etc.
Also I checked out that thread and watched the guys break down of the skippy on that track. Seems I’m close to what I need to do but just need to up the speed in some of the corners. It seems I have the part down he hated. The Chicane.

got down to 1:53:5. I think the main issue I was having before was allowing the tires to warm up. I would hit a wall and reset with cold tires over and over. Had a great streak of laps and lowered it down.

I reckon sim racing saved my life last night. Dashing to the Scottish border in torrential rain, the car aquaplaned at 70 and I controlled it perfectly. All those years of controlling sliding cars came in handy I reckon.

So I’ve spent the last two days raging at the skippy. It’s crazy how wacky the handling can be. Currently sonoma is the track for the series and I absolutely hate it.

It’s a good track to pick up some technical skills - it’s good for working on weight transfer with some of the interesting ways the track undulates. Every track teaches you something and you’ll take those lessons into later tracks and find them easier. Stick with it.

I’ve looked up a couple things on the skippy. It takes so long to warm the tires up and it spins so easily. The car just feels so inconsistent. I can do a few great laps and then I’m sucking so bad. I’ve seen people say it drives like the Mazda but I just don’t feel it. I can whip the Mazda around easily but damn the skip is kicking my ass

Just go easy the first couple of laps and you’ll be good to go. It’s a teaching car, so it’s getting rid of your bad habits.

Got back into iRacing in the last couple of weeks since I got some T-LCM pedals over xmas. I'd go as far as saying loadcells are a requirement for iracing due to the way the sim deals with braking and lock ups. Having a much better time of it and have even managed to get a few wins in that time despite being away for so long:
Been racing in just the Ferrari GT3 series and the Formula Sprint. I love the formula sprint, it's just a shame it's not more popular since everyone seems to gravitate towards the Skippy (which is fun, but it's not a race car). Also just got promoted to C license:
Might start getting involved in the Radical races and work towards my promotion to B since my ultimate goal is to race the LMP2 in IMSA.

The skippy isn't fast but it's a lot of fun to race, in part because it's not fast. On smaller technical tracks it's a shedload of fun, and it's within most people's ability range. The other big thing with the skippy is there's some really super-fast guys driving it who are really helpful to the rest of us in terms of helping us get to grips with iRacing. The USF2000 is fun, no doubt, but fixed races 15 minutes long is asking for a wreckfest. I see it getting 2/3 splits most races which is fine - it's what the skippy was pulling pre-pandemic. One thing which may count against it in popularity is running some ovals - I personally love an oval but most road drivers fucking hate them. You should try racing the Lotus 49 at Indianapolis - it's a real blast, the drafting and strategy is nuts with fast drivers.
The GT3s for me are no fun as they have too many driver aids and they just feel a bit numb. The GTE is better but I'm not a fan of multiclass.

This is true for me in real life, too. I used to have a tuned Subaru Impreza WRX, and live in an ideal environment to get a lot of fun out of it, but since the car was so fast, it was much more stressful to go out and do some "sporty driving around the bends" than it was in my slower cars, like the Clio Williams etc.

That's definitely a factor, but also as most people have fairly crap reactions and skills, a slower car is more raceable, ie you can have closer racing than you have with faster cars. Certainly in iRacing I find things like the F1 car pretty horrible. About the fastest I can handle is probably the Lotus 79 which is an absolute beast of a car, and I've had good races in it though that's primarily because of the brilliant community around that car (the L49 has a similarly wonderful community but the car's a bit too much of a handful for close racing among mere plebs like me).

I haven't bought Dirt 5 yet so I'm not sure but I imagine it's pretty subpar since they aren't outputting telemetry data. I play a ton of Dirty Rally 2 and it feels really good if you tweak the settings, so maybe I could do the same with Dirt 5. The other Dirt games felt pretty good. I am a little upset with my motion seat as they removed Dirt 2 support which I still like to play. I did keep the old software that has the firmware included so I can reinstall that to get support back for when I just have to play it.Next house I’m making a dedicated area for something like that. My current needs to be a little portable but I really want motion as well. Looks awesome btw
How is the DD with dirt? I haven’t tried it just yet. Mostly playing AC and iracing.

With the GT3's it comes down to who has the cleanest lines consistently rather than the best car control. I know what you mean about them being "numb" (this is a common criticism against gt3 cars in general across all of sim raving, not just in iracing) but they make for great nose to tail, door to door battles in online racing precisily because they are so controllable. Theres also the fact that someone relatively new can jump in and have fun racing against other people in them.
Personally I much prefer the usf2000 to the skippy but it's all personal taste. From my experience there are less wrecks in the usf races than in the skippy races (and even the ferrari gt3's) because although there are less of us those that race in usf tend to be regulars in that series.
Very disappointed to see that both the new dallara ir-01 and the usf pro series look like they are pretty dead... Not every race goes official :/
Is the formula 3 that great? I don't understand why it's so popular over the other open wheelers.

I can’t say I prefer the drive of the Skippy but I can see the appeal. I’ve made it to just under a C with the skip now. I’ve gotten used to the weight transfer from front to back and figured you really need to keep the rear weighted with a little gas at all times on certain tracks. In Oulton Park I did great on and was one of the fastest the entire time but on Sonoma I had a hell of a time with some of the blind corners because I kept letting off the gas and would spin easily. I have probably one more race to hit B but not really sure where I want to go next. I really enjoyed the Mazda so maybe return to that again but I’m a bit interested in more formula racing I guess.
As far as Oval I really would like to do some Nascar as I got to do some unofficial races with the Trucks but I absolutely hate the stock car racing for the Rookies. Absolutely a nightmare to race in with people wrecking everyone around them.

I'd suggest trying the usf2000 (the pure driving school formula sprint series). It's great fun to drive but planted enough to have safe side by side racing.
You also get one or two oval races a season in that car so it will also scratch that itch. It's an oval race this week in that car.

The radical at phillip Island is a great combo but... Those races are SR suicide. That car performs like soap on ice when the tires are cold, the first 2 laps are always chaos without fail. That series really shouldn't be a standing start.
Also bought the Dallara F3 and found some setups for this weeks race at Donnington. This car seems like more my jam and a good replacement for the usf2000 considering the indy pro series is (unfortunately) dead. Only done one race so far but the general conduct in these races isn't great... Far too many people ignoring blue flags. Can't wait to get my B license and get up to some of the longer races to see if things are improved there.
Going to buy the Dallara ir-01 at some point this weekend, really curious to see what those races are like.

I bought it anyway and I actually like how it drives but yeh, its far too fast to even consider participating in official races for it while I'm still building SR. Didn't notice the mirrors since I race in pancake mode anyway.
The usf2000 oval race this week is great fun. Was surprised to see it also counts towards the oval license as well so that's an added bonus considering its my first time doing oval races in iracing.
Also bought the Audi RS3 and I much prefer it to the M4 so even though they are completely difference classes I think I'll drive that in IMSA pilot for now. The M4 Gt4 is trash in this sim.

I bought a Playseat Challenge and a Thrustermaster wheel for xbox/pc last year, set it up today and have been playing Assetto Corsa on xbox today, really really fun, finished a online race but never figured out how to refuel lol.
Any PC sim games you guys could recomned during the steam sale? I have a RX 480 graphics card. Looking forward to playing more tomorrow

Resurecting this thread as i have just bought 6 months of iRacing for the first time, had a blast driving my first race online, if anyone has general tips or want to play together let me know!
Been away from this forum for a few years but is this thread indicative of the lack of sim racing interest in the NeoGAF community? The old sim racing thread was pretty epic pre-meltdown. Is there another, more active one?
Very brief +1s for VR, Assetto Corsa, Content Manager and the CSP, Fanatec gear, motion rigs, and oodles of car/track mods.
VR is my preferred way to race for ultimate immersion. Nothing else puts you IN the car, ON the track, AT the race venue.

Does not seem like most people on here have a sim rig or a wheel at all, the thread is more than dead. What type of VR headset do you have? been toying with the idea of a VR headset instead of buying triples, currently driving on a single monitor now. Assetto Corsa is a fantastic game, so fun to drive around.
Still rockin' my Rift CV1.
Tried a Quest 2 recently but the compression artefacts were killing me... I actually much prefer the IQ in the Rift, along with the better performance.
I'd recommend VR for anyone who sim races, but getting your 'sea legs' can be a painful experience. Motion sickness can be awful at first. I was lucky, I didn't have any issues at all. But a lot of people do until they get used to it.
