Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

Here's my review of this thread in less than an hour:

8/10. Mediocre. Not as fun as the Uncharted 3 review bonanza, but some good stuff here and there.

Can't wait for the death threats.

Alberto got a death threat over comparing Spy Fiction (a C-tier release from SWERY, the guy who later did Deadly Premonition) to Metal Gear Solid.

Segata mentioned on another forum that he wrote a slightly positive preview of some forgettable game that turned out mediocre, and months later somebody sent him a death threat for being "tricked" into wasting his money.

So yeah when you see people saying, "Oh my god DEATH THREATS OVER A REVIEW???" it happens to everyone no matter what the game is.

I've never received a death threat over a review.

Well, except from Disney.

Since this is a review thread let's give our own scores of the series:

Legend of Zelda - 7
Adventure of Link - 8
Zelda (Game & Watch) - 5
A Link to the Past - 10
Link's Awakening - 9
Ocarina of Time - 8
Majora's Mask - 8
Four Swords - 6
The Wind Waker - 9
Four Swords Adventure - 7
The Minish Cap - 7
Twilight Princess - 8
Phantom Hourglass - 6
Spirit Tracks - 7

Haven't played the Oracle games enough to really have a critique of them

I sometimes wonder who the hell these people are who send death threats. And then I wonder if they're among us and we don't even know it.

amongst the banned and soon to be banned I reckon.

Oh let me try

Legend of Zelda - 7
Adventure of Link - 6
A Link to the Past - 8
Ocarina of Time - 9
Majora's Mask - 10
The Wind Waker - 11
Twilight Princess - 9

Just out of curiosity (I haven't played it myself), what's the reasoning behind your MM score?

The one when, I, personally, was in the prime of my childhood: Magical Adventure/10
The ones that came afterwards: Disgusting dumbed down tripe that missed the point and lacked charm/10

Might as well heh

A Link to the Past - 9
Link's Awakening - 10
Ocarina of Time - 10
Majora's Mask - 9
The Wind Waker - 8
The Minish Cap - 8
Twilight Princess - 9
Phantom Hourglass - 4
Spirit Tracks - 5
Oracles of Ages - 10
Oracles of Season - 10

I'm kind of biased but I love the Gameboy Zelda games more <3

It's mostly people who think they have to defend their game of choice or whatever.

They become far too emotionally invested in what it is and what it isn't that it's the equivalent of writing a story about, say, Rick Perry and saying he had an amazing debate performance and danced all over Mitt Romney. Romney supporters (heh) will see that as a complete distortion of their reality.

Twilight Princess 9
OoT/3D 8
Wind Waker 6.5
Link to the Past 7.5
Minish Cap 7.5
Majora Mask 7
Phantom Hourglass 5
Spirit Tracks 5

Didn't beat 1, 2 or the Oracles games.

You can totally get back at those mean old reviewers by not reacting like a crazed dog or Big One!

I think a response like "Hmmm, well that wasn't as high as I expected it to be" from an 8/10 review just ain't gonna happen here.

Of course! How can something be better than childhood dreams?!

Fantastic game, but kind of hurt by pacing issues to be honest. Sidequests is the real highlight of the game as are the main dungeons, but it's not as well paced as Ocarina of Time. As for the melancholic mood that it's often praised for, while you can see this is amped up in Majora's Mask, this was first introduced in Ocarina of Time so I view them relatively similar thematically.

Fine, I'll play ball

The Legend of Zelda: 5*
Zelda II: Link's Adventure: 5*

A matter of preference. Majora's Mask, while unique, did a lot of things that I do not want in a Zelda title. I didn't like the 3 day thing. I didn't like the saving structure. I didn't care a great deal for the dungeons (though they were mostly well designed, they just weren't memorable to me). Soundtrack was atmospheric but not terribly great or memorable. The story and villain was of no interest to me, the opening annoys the crap out of me, most of the sidequests were complete chores particularly the one involving getting the best sword... just a plethora of issues that I had came together and really soured my opinion of the game.

I'll be honest: when it comes to Zelda, I know a lot of people want innovation and this and that, but I'm perfectly fine with them playing it safe. Skyward looks to shake things up compared to Twilight Princess but nothing I've seen about it bothers me in any way.

Well that would work, but my childhood was basically Ocarina of Time. I didn't play A Link to the Past till after I played and beat Wind Waker at release, and didn't play Link's Awakening in full till recently

Aw fuck it let's play giving scores.

Legend of Zelda: 7.5/10
Adventure of Link: 8/10 --> the defining game of my early childhood
A Link to the Past: 8.5/10
Minish Cap: 8.5/10
Link's Awakening: 8.5/10
Ocarina of Time: 9/10
Majora's Mask: 8/10
Phantom Hourglass: 7.5/10
Spirit Tracks: 9/10 (COME AT ME HATERS!)
Wind Waker: 9.5/10
Twilight Princess: 8/10
Oracles of Ages/Seasons: 8.5/10

I am very excited for SS; I really think it will be my highest rated Zelda experience yet.

I honestly thought Spirit Tracks was a bit better than PH just because it didn't have that stupid temple you had to keep returning to, but that's just me.

By the way, what's different about the save system in MM?

I don't want reviews; I want to play the game. Reviews mean other people already got to play the game, and they are now rubbing our faces in it with arbitrary numbers. ;_;

I don't know. I still don't know how it works. I mean I do, but I don't. Sorry, that's confusing as fuck but it's 2:30am here and I'm trying to figure out if I want to unwrap Skyrim or take it back and get Assassin's Creed on Tuesday.

Spirit Tracks was fucking awful. I have no idea what the folks at Nintendo were drinking when they made it. Literally the only good part of the game is its music (and its touch controls, but the novelty of that wore off for me with Phantom Hourglass).

I love Phantom Hourglass for its characterization (Linebeck in particular was great), its great use of the DS and its abilities, and because its simply flat out charming and fun. Spirit Tracks on the other hand is the total antithesis of Phantom Hourglass.

Haha, wtf it's that confusing? Can someone who remembers the save system in MM explain to me :D?

I'll be honest I didn't finish either Spirit Tracks or PH.

Thing is I thought PH was a piece of garbage and after about 6 hours couldn't do it anymore.

I didn't hate ST when I played it, but I wasn't exactly enjoying it either, then I hit a shitty music puzzle and dropped the shit.

Minish Cap is great, but too short.

This is kinda me as well.

I loved Minish Cap, to me it is the most fun out of all the Zelda's that isn't TP, however it did have some issues and was real short.

If it was just longer it would have been a 9 as well.

phantom hourglass was easy, had a dumb overworld, and generally shat on the wind waker. spirit tracks has the worst overworld in a zelda, but it has some of the best dungeons in the series, and more of them than phantom hourglass.

Minish Cap scores that aren't 10 aren't doing it right. Minish Cap >

I really liked Minish Cap a lot. I think it ended up having some unfortunate weaknesses, but a lot of that game really brought back the magic of something like Link to the Past. A lot of people say stuff like Link to the Past is only magical or whatever because of nostalgia, but no, Minish Cap really gave me that "feeling" again that nothing has been able to exactly replicate-- I'm hoping Skyward does this for me.

Since i'm going to try and be on good behavior, can anyone tell me what happens when you get banned? You just can't log in and post I take it, but you can still browse GAF?

I just want to know what our fallen comrades are going to be in for.
