Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

I'm kind of confused by this segment. What exactly is the game's identity crisis? The reviewer doesn't really explain it well at all.

It's Giantbomb. Don't concern yourself.

1Up's review is quite interesting. I think it makes some legit arguments. Hopefully people don't embarrass themselves about a Wii game not getting the same scores as HD blockbusters in 2011.

Reviews by US Outlets for a Wii Game in 2011 - im Not suprised, they have been hating the console and motion controls for 5 years, skyward sword never stood a chance.

No guns, no he, no multilayer .... No high score.

Which one is the controversial review?
I'm trying to figure that out! :lol

I hope the review texts don't have anything too spoilery in there. I'd like to know their criticisms at least. Remember the conversation we had last night about subjectivity and objectivity?

Seeing how vastly different is the rating for individual Zelda games by each individual fan, I'm going to strangle the first user to bitch about a score.

i just want to take this time to remind everyone that i totally called it

I expected mostly 9s, a smattering of 8s, and a couple 7s. Until today I was thinking I was wrong and the game would score much higher than I thought, with all the 10s, but now I see I was right originally.

Can't wait to play this game and make up my mind about it.

IGN: 10/10

I don't put much stock in review scores, but generally the highest confidence measure I've found of a game's greatness is when IGN gives it a perfect 10. Obviously this leaves out tons of good games that I would consider 10s, but the false positive rate is basically 0. If IGN gives a game a perfect 10, it's basically a masterpiece.
haha

MGS 4 says hi. IGN reviews should simply be put in a garbage bin. Yes, I am a hAteR.

It seems like the Zelda fans are giving it higher scores than those who are not, which generally means, most of us in this thread are in for an awesome game.

That's some hilarious shit! They can't decide what they really want from a Zelda game! Do they want more change? Do they want less change? Do they want no change?

Thanks, I needed a laugh.

The 1 up review is puzzling too. 1 up review seems like the reviewer thinks this is the best Zelda ever.

Then he complains about optional quests and the harp and that somehow makes it a B grade game

What the hell?

Some of the criticism for the 1UP review are quite specific and definitely make sense.

-Harp is shit
-Fetch quests suck.
-Spirit realm challenges are tedious.

Those all sound like legit game design issues.

LOL at the first comment for 1UP's review:

didn't read this review, nor have I played the game, but you DON'T give Zelda games a mere B+. One world: Shigeru Miyamoto. Need I say more? You have really let this community down, as well as God.

Honestly. It's like you think your own personal opinion should be reflected in the review.

Don't be this guy, GAF. Just don't.

Having not read a lot about the game's features, 1up's mention of Spirit Realm challenges sounds awful. Sounds like a variant of the Phantom Hourglass mechanic and I hated it in that game.

I am going to be honest, after trying the demo, I honestly don't think I want the game that much at launch. I just didn't really enjoy it. I have enough games to play that I think I'll pass for now.

IGN 10/10!!!!!

10 Presentation
The origin story, characters and cinematic sensibility here are superb.

10 Graphics
Nintendo's creative visual style here is not only the best on Wii but truly timeless and stunning.

9.0 Sound
The soundtrack doesn't quite measure up to the franchise's best, though that's a very high standard. No voice acting, though not necessary, does hurt the cinematic feel.

10 Gameplay
You'll never want to go back to traditional controls for a Zelda game.

10 Lasting Appeal
There are tons of side quests that will keep you busy. Plus there's incentive to play through the entire 40-hour adventure again.

10

O_O

the 5/5 haha.

not getting perfect marks like many expected.
seems like the general critic consensus is that MW3, skyrim, Batman, UC3, Dark souls, gears 3, etc. are all superior experiences.

looking forward to the game still. Ive been waiting to be impressed by a Zelda game for a while.

God I love gaf mood swings.

Can't wait to dig into the comments for the reviews later ;)

Also according to ign, even though it's different reviewers, zelda scored higher than skyrim, but zelda needs to learn from skyrim, to score, higher?

Math is confusing!!!!!

A.... ten? It feels so fleeting now.

I would hope mine (and Edge's and Wired's) scores are still meaningful, particularly with our full text now up.

As a couple people have thankfully pointed out: 4/5 or 8-9/10 range is still a very good game by any scale.
