despite twilight princess' equally slow beginning, that game had a sense of urgency and grandness from the very start that skyward sword is lacking so far. at least story wise (and mechanically, thanks to the wolf segments) you seemed to be part of something bigger and mysterious and dangerous that you couldn't quite comprehend, at least not initially. this was also the case to an extent in alttp (which i maintain had a fairly dark and moody beginning), link's awakening and majora's mask. again, it's the sense of urgency and mystery that's missing.
and midna is far and away the better and more interesting sidekick than fi. i don't know if fi gains some depth later on, but at this point in twilight princess midna was already a well defined, very intriguing and curious character. fi is completely one dimensional and boring so far.

I think why so many people get disappointed in a new Zelda is because they feel that each new entry should render the previous one completely and utterly irrelevant. When they find that what they actually had held merit they begin to appreciate it more, but make the same mistake with future installments.FreeMufasa said:If there's one thing good to come out of all this. I hope Jeff actually gives it a try and plays through it, it seems like he's been down on the zelda franchise for a while and just generally uninterested in it. At least Vinny will play through it!shadyspace said:My only disappointment with GB giving it a 4 is that it automatically precludes it from their GOTY deliberations. Are you kidding? On what planet would a 4/5 be considered for GOTY?Medalion said:So if a game doesn't get perfect, that automatically discounts it from being GOTY?
Harsh times indeed
Sometimes GB members have a habit of passing judgment based off one member's feelings on the game. I think it happened with Catherine in the past, although Klepek eventually played it and enjoyed it. I can totally see that happening here, especially seeing as none of them have any desire to play a Wii game at this point. Its going to basically boil down to "Hey its another Zelda game, I heard it plays like Zelda" for them, which is expected from how they usually handle these things.solarus said:I hope Jeff actually gives it a try and plays through it, it seems like he's been down on the zelda franchise for a while and just generally uninterested in it. I wonder how many people mistake beginnings for tutorials..oatmeal said:Just got back from my buddies house.

My God...tutorial fucking city.
They need to ask at the beginning if you're a retarded baby or if you are over 6.
It was ridiculous.

There are more than 1 people at a videogame site that can play the game who didn't write the review who gave it a 4 and can still call it their GOTYshadyspace said:Are you kidding? On what planet would a 4/5 be considered for GOTY?
This is true, Fallout 3 and Fable 2 had 4/5's and did quite well on GB. In this case though, I doubt that any team members besides Vinny will give this game a look which is unfortunate, but hey thats GB.Medalion said:There are more than 1 people at a videogame site that can play the game who didn't write the review who gave it a 4 and can still call it their GOTY

I don't think their score really surprised me, though. They seemed to be indifferent towards it for the past year or so.shadyspace said:My only disappointment with GB giving it a 4 is that it automatically precludes it from their GOTY deliberations. Honestly though that site gets a bit too much hate - awesome site with awesome people that run it, if maybe a little biased though.
The SS review was actually well written.
