Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

IIRC, Nintendo Rivista Ufficiale has not given a score yet. Next number, I think.
They were the ones of the 11/10 to Super Mario Galaxy. Now, I'm expecting a 11.5/10 score :P

Didn't they give SS a 9/10? When discussing it with an Italian member, he said the magazine gave SMG an 11/10. Or did multiple magazines give SMG 11/10s?

They gave it a 10, but the motion controls scored a 9.0

I think that's the publication you guys are talking about, not sure.

Yeah, guys, NRU already gave its score, a 10/10, with a 9 for controls, you guys remembered well...I didn't XD

i hope this picks up the pace soon...

despite twilight princess' equally slow beginning, that game had a sense of urgency and grandness from the very start that skyward sword is lacking so far. at least story wise (and mechanically, thanks to the wolf segments) you seemed to be part of something bigger and mysterious and dangerous that you couldn't quite comprehend, at least not initially. this was also the case to an extent in alttp (which i maintain had a fairly dark and moody beginning), link's awakening and majora's mask. again, it's the sense of urgency and mystery that's missing.

and midna is far and away the better and more interesting sidekick than fi. i don't know if fi gains some depth later on, but at this point in twilight princess midna was already a well defined, very intriguing and curious character. fi is completely one dimensional and boring so far.

"It may not be the Wii’s best game (hi Mario Galaxy 2); it may not even be this year’s best game (hi Portal 2), but like the brilliant blue backdrop of Skyward Sword, Zelda’s future has rarely looked brighter."

Sigh... Well, at least we know it's not coming from a crazy Nintendo fanboy.

Without playing SS yet, I'd probably agree with what he said on a personal level. I think it's pretty foolish to throw that kind of subjectivity around in a review though.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. I know I don't hardly ever post here, but I did want to drop and say thank you to those of you that shared the review.

If you guys have any questions about the game, I'll try to get in here and answer all that I can later tonight.

I think why so many people get disappointed in a new Zelda is because they feel that each new entry should render the previous one completely and utterly irrelevant. When they find that what they actually had held merit they begin to appreciate it more, but make the same mistake with future installments.

Atleast that's my take on it.

My only disappointment with GB giving it a 4 is that it automatically precludes it from their GOTY deliberations. Having Skyward Sword in the mix would have made it a more interesting conversation, regardless of whether it actually was bestowed the award or not.

Yeah, I won't lie...that's instantly one of my favorite characters.

I hope Jeff actually gives it a try and plays through it, it seems like he's been down on the zelda franchise for a while and just generally uninterested in it. At least Vinny will play through it!

Woot, I was looking through the text-dump and look what I found...

Nothing major, just a cute quote:
All right, I'll tell you. But remember--
it's a secret to everybody.

Hell yeah!

Just got back from my buddies house.

We played throuhg the first hour or so.

My God...tutorial fucking city.

They need to ask at the beginning if you're a retarded baby or if you are over 6.

It was ridiculous.

And damnit, text bubbles...let me fucking speed you up! So slow.

Graphics look great, music sounds very nice.

Sometimes GB members have a habit of passing judgment based off one member's feelings on the game. I think it happened with Catherine in the past, although Klepek eventually played it and enjoyed it. I can totally see that happening here, especially seeing as none of them have any desire to play a Wii game at this point. Its going to basically boil down to "Hey its another Zelda game, I heard it plays like Zelda" for them, which is expected from how they usually handle these things.

I wonder how many people mistake beginnings for tutorials..

Are you kidding? On what planet would a 4/5 be considered for GOTY?
There are more than 1 people at a videogame site that can play the game who didn't write the review who gave it a 4 and can still call it their GOTY

This is true, Fallout 3 and Fable 2 had 4/5's and did quite well on GB. In this case though, I doubt that any team members besides Vinny will give this game a look which is unfortunate, but hey thats GB.

I'm sure Brad'll play it.

I don't think their score really surprised me, though. They seemed to be indifferent towards it for the past year or so.

They usually have separate Top 10 GOTY lists so maybe they might end up discussing it after all? I'd just like to hear other GB members' (probably Brad's) impressions of it, at least.

9.5

Honestly though that site gets a bit too much hate - awesome site with awesome people that run it, if maybe a little biased though.

The SS review was actually well written.
No waaaaay. :O

Is the review somewhat spoiler-free (ie: for someone who hasn't seen footage or read anything about past the first dungeon, with the exception of some gameplay mechanics like dowsing)? They usually go a little in-depth with how some gameplay mechanics and controls work and I kind of like that.

RawmeatCowboy -- if you're still here... how's the world-building? Is it comparable to Majora's Mask or The Wind Waker somewhat? (I'm referring to NPC dialogue/relationships and world/town atmosphere, I guess.)

I bet it's definitely jarring for people who are annoyed by this sort of thing, but I've oddly never really been bothered by it. I enjoyed it in Twilight Princess to be honest. Had a sort of calm before the storm feel about it. I liked the slowness and peacefulness. It does hurt replays though for sure.

However it doesn't sound like anything that will actually try my patience, personally.

Oh so the game literally asks you if you're a retarded baby? How thoughtful of Nintendo. Always innovating.

If you hated the opening I wonder how worse it was before during development when Aonuma hated the beginning

I'm here, sir!

It could be for a lack of memory with the finer town details in MM/WW, but I found the relationship building in Skyloft pretty interesting. There are a handful of characters that you learn about outside of their jobs. This especially comes into play when you do the day/night cycle. There are three families in general that I really came to enjoy as the game went on and I performed side-quests.

I wouldn't say you form deep relationships with any of the NPCs, but you do get to learn about some of them and how they exist outside their daily day-to-day routine.

Yeah, I want to get used to a game before it gets out of control.

It's really annoying how some games start in the middle of the action without knowing what to do (especially because it almost always means there will be pop-ups showing the controls that interrupt the whole thing ).

Sonic Generations and Super Mario 3D Land did a good job at this, but they weren't near as complicated as Zelda.
