So I got pepper sprayed, beaten up, and robbed tonight.

I only wear them like that during the night, for example when I go home from work at 2am. During the day when there is no danger I keep them in a carry case and everybody thinks it's an umbrella.

Everything you say to justify or explain it just makes it funnier. So you carry them around in a case with you all day ready for trouble to strike so you can whack them out? Or is it part of a samurai code that you can't part with your weapons?

stock-taking, I have it part time along with school, usually we end between 1am-5am

Oh jeez, do you take them to school with you?

Get obamacare. If you make within 138 percent of the poverty line you won't have to pay anything. That qualifies you for Medicaid.

This is the most important advice posted so far. Sign up for health insurance ASAP as you are low income. Even a minor injury such as getting stitches will cause you thousand of dollars.

I carry them mostly because I train Iaido every day. Every time I have a while, between classes, during break, etc. I go to the courtyard and exercise a bit.

Aye, daisho is both short sword and long sword. I don't live in Japan though, I am from Eastern Europe and carrying cold weapons is completely legal.

No, I carry 2 swords, 1 long and 1 short. I have been doing it for 8 years now.
Looool im laughing so hard. But when u think about it if op did the same as your crazy ass, he might have been better off. Then again, a gun or a sword in this situation might have made it much worse if the perpetrators sprayed your eyes in the first place.

Sorry to hear what happened to you OP. Try to be more careful. How is it we still live in a world where shit like this happens so often. We can do so much better as civilized humans.

Swords, socks, and sandals..NeoGAF as fuck.

Sorry, OP. Really sucks what happened to you. Good on the GAFfer that offered you a new DS..

Honestly,I got so depressed I thought about quitting videogames after what just happened. All my savings and hard work just to get a 3DS, gone just like that. but suddenly a good person like him just offered a 3DS, gave me hope and some tears of joy too.

I got mugged twice in one year as a teenager and almost 20 years later I'm still paranoid sometimes.

Not to victim-blame myself, though, but both times I was running around like the easiest target in the world, with headphones and shopping bags.

I actually remember that these two guys came up the stairs from the subway station I was just entering, they turned around, sat in the same fucking train as me, got out at my stop, followed me around for a bit and then did the old "hey, I got a question, do you know this one street we're looking for, this one street, uhm, by the way, here's a knife, give us your money".

I have no idea why this didn't ring any alarm bells earlier.

I was walking around with my brother five years ago and he was pretty much dressed like I was back then - white kid wannabe gangster with expensive street wear - and when a group of guys saw him and turned around and started yelling "hey, wait, hey, you guys!" I told him "if we don't run like hell right now, they're going to mug us". So we ran.

At least I never got beaten up, that would have probably given me straight up agoraphobia. I'm anxious enough as it is.

Hope you get better soon, OP.

My eyes are swelling a bit and my face too, I refused medical attention because I dont have health insurance. I'm still alive thats all that matters.

Holy shit.
What are you doing america?!

Get well soon, OP.
Also go see a doctor if anything feels strage.

I'm running around like that all the time. Its the governments fucking job to make sure the streets are safe during the day and at night.

Good, man..not everyone is an asshole. No need to lose hope. As a person who goes everywhere wearing headphones, don't do that shit while walking at night anymore. I'm a very tall and menacing looking dude, so I don't attract such people. I also don't walk anywhere when I can bike, so the headphones aren't as big an issue.

Well, when everybody is blaming police for everything (and I am not saying they are always in the right) not many people are joining the force. We have the same problem here in Europe. You see 2 officers in the centre of the capital at high noon and then during the night all you can see are drug dealers, thugs, homeless and prostitutes.

Government can't clone police officers.

This is a fascinating paragraph, so much to unpack.

...

OP, I've never been through anything like that, but I imagine it must suck shit. I hope you can recover mentally. :(

But hey, at least you don't have it as bad as mcz117chief.

That's terrible to hear happen to you OP :(
Glad you're ok overall though. Hope they catch the people responsible and you can somehow get your stuff back.

Robbery sucks. Hell, I've been on the receiving end. It's why I'm kinda paranoid and lock all doors behind me reflexively no matter where I go, even if I'm told there's no point in locking them.

That being said, robbery is infinitely preferable to being shot or stabbed because you were filled with so much pride that you would rather fight back with a deadly weapon than just let them have your phone or whatever. It's a hard thing for people to do to let go of that sense of pride (and it's why some people in the US love the idea of open carry), and to be honest, reaching that level of self-realization is something I find a lot more mature and worthy of respect than telling others about how you would totally fuck up all those dudes who are robbing you.

Yea. I s really pride wanting to fight back. We always imagine we'll fight the gun out their hand and win and all that. In real life your widow is sobbing over your casket. Sometimes you just gotta give it up.

And now we've gone in a special direction..

OP, visit your local community health center, they can help you apply for state run health insurance. You need to bring your tax return, SSN and ID.

Hell, I just applied for state run health insurance myself online.

I just filled out some fields on healthcare.gov and ended up qualifying without needing to pay a dime for my state's health insurance, and got mailed the papers.

Sure, if you're not too confident about doing this kinda thing it's nice to go to a health center to get help, but if that's too far outta the way it's really not that bad applying for state run health insurance online. It was basically an hour or two on the website and then getting papers in the mail.

I'm really exhausted right now. I'll try to get some sleep. Thanks again for all the concern, advice, and help. I really appreciate it. I am thankful to have you guys, this is the most traumatizing moment of my life and you guys were there to ease the pain.

I don't even...

I can't help but to imagine a Trump-like figure saying "execute order 83."

*clone troopers commence firing on citizens*

But in all seriousness. Cops can do their jobs. You don't have to kill unarmed civilians to properly patrol the streets

Thanks to this topic I learned that:

- people love to make fun of others hobbies (that guy is carrying his swords like guitar players are carrying their guitares guys... never been to EE?)

- never wear headphones if you are walking alone at night

- there are still people that do good (the guy that donates his 3DS)

- America fucking sucks - health care should be mandatory everywhere

Go and get your eye checked out because it could easily be something worse. Get well.

I got robbed once too, half broken jaw, two rips gone, stolen iPhone 3GS, a bit of money and such, but I got everything back for free because I got robbed and even enough money for a iPhone 4. Still fucked me up for a few weeks.

But, how is it a deterrent if people think it's an umbrella?

I don't think during class or when the streets are full of people or in a metro train or at a pub I need to have my bokken out.

That is not my point, my point is that there aren't enough officers to make people feel safe. I know only 2 people who are police officers and one is retired. People are afraid to go out on the streets during the night for a good reason.

You said that people are joining the force because of the outcry against the police force. I was stating why there was an outcry and how individuals that want to do the job properly are able to do so

I said people are NOT joining the police force because of their bad rep lately. How many kids today dream of being a police officer and help people? Most people today fear the police because they might get shot or mugged or something.

Kids aren't going to magically solve what you state is a current problem. There are plenty of recruitment efforts going on for addressing the issue.

It was just an example. I know there are recruitment drives to get more people to join the force but are people actually joining? I know that in my country there is an urgent lack of police officers.

A collapsible baton would be more sensible and concealable. Or a flashlight/Taser.

I don't think ASPs are legal to carry everywhere in the States. You can kill someone with one pretty easily. I don't think any weapon could have helped the OP though. The situation was fucked. I'm not sure how you could have defended yourself. Really sorry to hear what happened to you man.

Difference is people don't carry their guitars around as a crime deterrent or protection do they? The guy started out saying he carry swords with him, it was only later he explained it was a long time hobby of his. Still don't agree that it's a normal thing to do, I get that it's his hobby but it's excessive to take them everywhere.

Here you go

http://imgur.com/a/PxbXJ the second pic is just a bonus ;)

Sorry about the hair cut, I am growing long hair for my NieR cosplay this year so I am struggling with a good way to groom myself. Also, I am just wearing my home attire, this is not how I walk around town (I usually wear jeans and such), but this is just a quick demonstration. And for people saying stuff like "swinging it around in front of your bedroom mirror like Naruto", I am doing Iaido for 8 years now so I know how to use my bokken quite effectively.

I'd be scared too I heard some of those thugs carry around 2 swords at once at all times. I'm from America so I dunno about Eastern Europe

We ran like idiots across a bridge over the beautiful Rhine. At least we were idiots with our wallets intact.

It worked, of course a couple of teenager muggers wouldn't run after us, that's too much work and draws too much attention.

It was early afternoon, by the way.
