I got mugged twice in one year as a teenager and almost 20 years later I'm still paranoid sometimes.
Not to victim-blame myself, though, but both times I was running around like the easiest target in the world, with headphones and shopping bags.
I actually remember that these two guys came up the stairs from the subway station I was just entering, they turned around, sat in the same fucking train as me, got out at my stop, followed me around for a bit and then did the old "hey, I got a question, do you know this one street we're looking for, this one street, uhm, by the way, here's a knife, give us your money".
I have no idea why this didn't ring any alarm bells earlier.
I was walking around with my brother five years ago and he was pretty much dressed like I was back then - white kid wannabe gangster with expensive street wear - and when a group of guys saw him and turned around and started yelling "hey, wait, hey, you guys!" I told him "if we don't run like hell right now, they're going to mug us". So we ran.
At least I never got beaten up, that would have probably given me straight up agoraphobia. I'm anxious enough as it is.
Hope you get better soon, OP.
